I Expect ...

I agree 100%. Tom Peters puts it out there bluntly. Everything you say is a promise.

I Expect ...

I expect promises to be kept.
Not "approximately."
But e-x-a-c-t-l-y.
Is that too much to ask?
(I've traveled about 5,000,000 miles since I started public gabbing. Hurricanes. Tornados. Thunder storms. Blizzards. Political disturbances. Ice storms. Flu. Food poisoning. General angst. Bad attitude. Mechanical screw-ups. Grotesque stupidity. Evil spirits. So what? I'm not allowed to show up for the speech 20 seconds late, let alone 2 days late. "Hey, I know there are 3,600 attending my Saturday keynote, but I won't be able to make it 'til Monday; hope that won't be a problem." Nope. Ain't gonna work.)

Having to manage a manager

For the past few months, I have been reporting to a vice president. My previous manager, a Director had left the company after moving our group from Operations to Engineering. Since my previous manager left, I've been frustrated and felt stranded. The simple day to day things that should be no brainers are now bringing my work to a screeching halt. I can no longer get expense reports or purchase requests approved. When I ask about it, all my co-workers tell me to ask the VPs assistant to put a sticky note on his monitor to remind him.... Why do I have to get a sticky note to remind a VP to do his job in a timely fashion!?! How the hell did he get to be a VP without being able to get things done? Why does he have direct technical reports if he is not able to devote time to managing them? I have spoken with my so called manager a total of 4 times. A 2 minute introduction when my previous manager left, and then 3 short emails trying to arrange a vacation. That's it. I sometimes see him in project approval meetings, but we never exchange a word. In short, I don't believe I have a manager.

Rumor has it that's all about to change. Tomorrow I get a manager. Despite the fact that I hear nasty rumors about how he's not very competent and his employees almost had him fired I'm looking forward to it. I can't do my job if I can't buy equipment. I need someone to push the red tape around a little so I can navigate in this company.

Keeping busy.

Hachimitsu, Luke and I have been keeping very, very busy these days.... Luke is a lot of work. He's a month old now and we're finally getting a pattern that let's us sleep for more than 3 hours at a time! That little boy sleeps well at night, but not during the day. He's very cute though.... I hadn't noticed how quickly the time went by. Things are going to be very busy from now on.

Happy Birthday Luke!

Well, he's here! A little late, a lot heavy, and very hungry, Luke was born on March 23, 2005 at 1:55am. He was 9lbs 6oz (4263g) and he's growing every day. It's taken about this long for us just to get caught up enough that I can sit down and write this little text. He is so cute. Absolutely adorable!

Ticket Punching by Kevin Salwen in Business

A year ago, I would have told you I loved my work, it was great! Over the last year, through many changes here, I'd have to say that I've felt unhappy and I've wanted to go elsewhere. Today I saw this post and it rang a bell.... I feel like I'm just here to get my ticket punched and then move on. And I'm not the only one. My co-worker moved to a line manager position so he could put in his time, get his ticket punched and go somewhere more fulfilling.

Ticket Punching by Kevin Salwen in Business

ticketpunch.jpgI had breakfast this morning with a friend who works for a brutal organization. The hours are rough, the work would be fulfilling if the management ever allowed that to happen. It's a company in the creative arena yet built on productivity that reminds me of Henry Ford -- x number of people for y number of hours equals xy (+z if you whip people enough).

What's interesting about this is that my friend sees this as a ticket-punching exercise: Put in 3 years, get the credential, move to something better that fulfills the soul. He's already thinking of opportunities. (I should also note that he very much likes his immediate boss, which lessens the pain of working there.)

I remember thinking about work in that way -- pay the dues, move ahead -- for years. It was something I learned from my parents, who insisted on a no-whining policy. Loving your work was waaaay down on the list, certainly much lower than getting credentials, providing for the family, etc.

But I also thought that type of thinking was on the way out, that times were changing to more enlightened workplaces that provided the combo of money and passion. I know I could never work without that again, but is that because I'm older or because I've been through the ticket-punching mill? Or is because I've become spoiled? I'm going to have to ponder this and would welcome your ideas as I do.

CnC Software

I finally came up with a product that I like for my software company. CnC Software will sell Test Data Management software. This is close enough to my day job that I have a good base in the field I think. I still want more information though. So anyone that has an interest in this area, go to the forums and let me know what you'd like to see in a product.

I've set up a weblog and a forum where you can follow along as I build the company. I would love to see a community develop around this. Please tell me what you like about the products you're using now, what you don't like, and what you want if you could have anything.

Rights and Responsibilities

Ok, building on my last post, I have a new set of rights and responsibilities:

To earn the right to whine and complain, you must accept the responsibility to do something to improve the situation.

Stop whining and do something!

Why do people insist on being stubborn about things? I have one developor here who only complains... Constantly complain complain complain. Yes, we do not have a written standard for how this log file should be formatted. But you have a 600kb sample to look at. How hard is it to ask us how to do it and work from there? Why do people have to get so upset that they don't have a requirements document that clearly states what should and shouldn't be in the file? If you want one, write it. Don't tell me that it's not your job either. I don't need it, I don't use it. I am quite capable of managing my requirements. I have a thick stack of requirements for my software. Why, when I point out something that isn't quite as neat as it could be does he explode? Pissing and moaning and whining about how it's not like this software, it's not neatly documented, it's not completely modular, etc. Yes, I know that, everyone knows that, and if they didn't, they picked it up a month ago when you started whining about it. The question is, what are you going to do about it? If you say nothing, then STOP WHINING! I don't want to hear it if you don't plan to fix it.

Mini Me

Well, if you read that last post and followed the link to my wife's weblog, you know that there's a new addition to our family on the way. We found out in June when I was on business in China. Lot's of things have been changing for us. We have moved to a new apartment, Hichan has a new job, we have a new stroller, a new crib, a new car seat...

We've decided on a name for a girl, but are still totally up in the air if it's a boy... We don't even know if it's a boy or a girl, just that it kicks really hard!
