Below are some commonly asked questions and answers about this mailing list:

What is a Mailing List? A mailing list is a server application that allows for the easy distribution of email messages to a group of people. Using an email program (be it stand-alone or web-based), a subscriber can send out an email message to the mailing list server and the server will forward this email message to all the other people who have subscribed to the mailing list. This makes it very convenient to reach a large group of people without having to keep track of their individual email addresses. The mailing list also offers other facilities like the archiving of these messages, so that those joining later, can retrieve past messages already entered to the list. A mailing list facilitates discussion, communication and sharing of information with like-minded people. A mailing list can facilitate exponential communications when participants who subscribe to other mailing lists forward articles from one list to another.

What are some useful commands to know about?

This mailing list allows subscribers to control some aspects of how they wish to receive messages from the list. Commands are words that you enter in the subject of your email message when communicating with the mailing list. Here are some commands and what they do.

  • SUBSCRIBE - subscribes a new user to the mailing list
  • UNSUBSCRIBE - unsubscribes an existing user from the mailing list. It must come from the email address of the subscriber.
  • DIGEST - has the list send the user an email message with instructions on how to use this command.
  • DIGEST-OFF - turns off digest mode, if a subscriber is using a digest. By setting up as a DIGEST subscriber, you do not get email messages from the list as they arrive, but rather get all the email messages entered during a certain period of time in one email message.
  • DIGEST-xx - this command tells the mailing list to automatically send you a digest every xx days.
  • DIGEST-ON - this command tells the mailing list to automatically send digests. The default time is 7 days worth of messages.
  • HELP - request an email message from the mail list with a list of commands you can use.
Can this list handle HTML formatted email messages? Yes, this mailing list can handle HTML formatted messages. But, it would be appreciated if you send non-HTML formatted messages. This cuts down on the message size and helps ensure that no viruses are transmitted to other list users.
Can I use file attachments with this list?

Yes, a file attachment can be sent with email messages to this list. Again, this is NOT encouraged. This not only slows down the list and forces all subscribers to receive the attachment, it also opens up the possibility of spreading a virus. We encourage all users to not send file attachments and if you do receive one, be very careful opening it.

How quickly will a message I send to this list get out to other subscribers? This mail list server sends out mail every half hour, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
How can I get others to join?

You can invite your friends and others to join this list by sending them to this web page where they can get information on how to join and what this list is all about and how to use it. I've just joined this mailing list. How can I catch up with some of the messages that have gone through already?

You can send an email message to the mailing list with the DIGEST-ON command in the subject of the email message. This will bring in the past 7 days worth of messages as a single email message. Once you've received this catch up message, you can send another email to the mailing list to turn off digest mode, with the command DIGEST-OFF in the subject of your message. To make it easy for you, we're providing links to quickly create the correct email messages ...
