Generation No. 1

1.  RICHARD1 LONIE was born Abt. 1766 in Ireland, and died Abt. 1854 in Darling Twp. North Lanark Co. Ontario.  He married DORA - Abt. 1792 in Ireland.  She was born Abt. 1767 in Ireland, and died Abt. 1855 in Darling Twp.  North Lanark Co. Ontario.

Child of RICHARD LONIE and DORA  is:

i.        SAMUEL2 LONEY b. Abt. 1811, Tipperary, Ireland; d. Abt. 1890,  Little Ireland, Renfrew Co. Ontario.

Generation No. 2

2.  SAMUEL2 LONEY (RICHARD1 LONIE) was born Abt. 1811 in Tipperary, Ireland, and died Abt. 1890 in Little Ireland, Renfrew Co. Ontario.  He married (1) SUSAN DAGG Abt. 1830 in Ireland.  She was born Abt. 1813 in Ireland, and died 1855 in Darling Twp. North Lanark Co. near Loney  Lake, Ontario.  He married (2) JANE GUEST Abt. 1857 in Darling Twp. North Lanark Co. Ontario, daughter of THOMAS  GUEST and ELIZABETH DAGG.  She was born 1831 in Ireland, and died Abt. 1885 in Little Ireland, Renfrew Co. Ontario.

Samuel Loney came to Canada about 1831 during the Potato Famine. He belonged to the Church of England. Lived near Lowney Lake, Darling Twp. North Lanark County,  then Little Ireland mid 1870.  Census says 1851-52 but comparing birthdays from later census I determined that the Ennumerator probably didn't do this area of Darling Twp. until 1853.  The Ennumerator spelled the surname, Lonie. 1871 Census spelled it Loney.   Samuel was living in a log house. A Richard Lonie age 87 and a Dora Lonie age 86 are their parents.

The Surname is Irish, variations include Lonney, Lunny, Luny, Looney and O'Looney. The name is associated with the northern half of Ireland, including Tyrone and Armagh. In Armagh there is a villiage called Loney's Town, near Richill.

The greater number of names on this sheet have located themselves on the Northern Boundary of Darling on the shores of White Lake. This sheet of water extending the Northern boundary of Darling. Some way for 14 miles the scenery is wild and as seen of the ice looks very forbidding. The general appearance of the country, rocky and rough. There are few spots where there are generaly too small to make a good field and for life a good farm. The whole township is broken, no levels but hill and dale every where. The only good purpose which this Township seems fit to answer in after generations will be the feeding of sheep. The best land in the Township with 50 to 70 acres of improvements will seldom bring more than from 50 to 80 Pounds for a hundred acre lot.

1871 Census - Microfilm # 10,019/Darling Twp. North Lanark County Range/Concession #11 Lot 19. Noted as a tenant with 164 acres, 100 improved, 60 pasture. Wheat 3 acres/bushels 15, Barley 6, Oats 10, Peas 4, Potates 1.5 acres/100 bushel Hay crop 20 = 10 tons.  On another page Ennumerator noted Samuel owned 200 acres, 2 barns, 2 wagons, 2 boats, 1 plough. Note discrepancy in amount of acres and a tenant versus ownership.  Further research may clarify apparent discrepancy. 2 horses over 3 years, 4 Milch cows, 5 other horned cattle, 6 sheep, 3 swine, 6 cattle killed or sold for slaughter, 8 sheep killed or sold for slaughter, 300 lbs. butter, 40 pounds of wood, 20 cords of firewood.

1881 Census - Microfilm # C-13,234/Raglan,Radcliffe Twp. Renfrew Co. Samuel is now located in this County/Twp. as noted above with wife Jane and 3 children, Samuel 16, Matilda 13 and Eliza 4. All other 8 children from first marriage are adults by this time and are located elswhere.

1891 Census - Microfilm #T-6366,Raglan/Radcliffe Twp. Renfrew Co. This Samuel Loney not metioned. Both are found in the May 26, 1891 Census, Microfilm # T-6366. Tom was age 46 and James was 52. Both were sons of Samuel born 1811 in Ireland,  to his first wife Susan Dagg. LONEY'S CHUTE Portage was named after the Loney Family of Little Ireland in the mid 1800's near Carlow Twp. Loney Lake also named.  Road construction was a very slow,  back breaking endeaver when oxen and horses were the only help to manpower. Little Ireland was not far from Carlow's eastern boundry, for those who could only travel by river. In  about the 1860's, the Government finally gave a grant to build a road through the bush and a bridge across the Little Mississippi at Loney's Chute.  There were 10 men with axes, crosscut saws, shovels, picks, a few steel drills, a keg of blasting powder, 3 wagons and 3 ox teams built the 5 miles of road. The pier at the bridge rests upon, was made of cedar logs.  When the road and bridge were finally finished the settlers could travel with horses and wagons to the grist mill and store that was 20 miles away to get their wheat ground into flour and take care of other matters. The road wound up and down through the bush over mudholes and stones. Loney's Chute became well known for it's speckled trout. Today the old road and bridge has been bypassed by other roads and it has not been used for years. Roads were often swept away and had to be rebuilt many times over. Excerpts from  the book "Before The Memories Fade"

Children who would have gone to school as early as 1871 would have had a long walk to Carlow area on Lot 21 on the 6th Line.  Those living in the north and east, for instance, the Ralph's who lived on the Renfrew County line had to walk 5 miles and others near McArthur's Mills had to walk 3 miles. Excerpts from the book "Before The Memories Fade".
