The Descendants of George Dagg, Pontiac County
[This is an interim
file only, pending completion of research]
George Dagg owned the land lots 9 (both s½
& n½) range 6, township of
Clarendon, county of Pontiac, Lower Canada or Quebec. This land is now the Village of Shawville on the west side of
Centre Street to Rectory Road. From the
1842 census, George was an innkeeper who said he had been in Canada for 19
years (very questionable time as children were born in Ireland in the early
1820s). From the 1861 census the
200 acres had valuation of $2,000, and had 70 acres cleared. In 1841, George Dagg sold land to the
Anglican Mission for the first St. Paul’s Church located in the Village
Cemetery. In 1869, son Isaac sold more
land to the Mission to enlarge the Village Cemetery (so named as both
Anglican & Methodists were buried here).
George Dagg was a bigamist. He first married Mary Connelly in Ireland,
had three daughters, left Ireland and immigrated to Canada leaving the family
in Ireland to follow. From family lore,
George faithfully wrote to Mary at first but after some time the letters
stopped. Mary saved or arranged passage
to Canada for her and the three daughters.
Daughter Sarah died at sea during the crossing, Mary hid the body as she
did not want her daughter buried at sea.
Sarah is supposed to be buried in Halifax (possibly Quebec depending
on landing port). Mary & the
two girls came to Clarendon and found that George had married (have not
found the registration for this marriage) Rosanna Stewart and had a second
family. When asked if she wanted to
take George to law, Mary reportedly answered if they are happy leave them
be. Mary lived at Cator’s Creek about
one mile from George and Rosanna.
After both wives died: Mary in 1847 and Rosanna in 1851, George married
Ann Adams.
George Dagg born 1794 (may be later dates
vary in census & church registrations) in Prospect (unsubstantiated),
County Tipperary, Ireland and died March 4, 1866 in Clarendon, Quebec and is
buried in the Village Cemetery at Shawville - no tombstone.

3rd marriage to Ann Adams on May 11, 1857 at Portage
du Fort Anglican Mission. Ann was born
about 1809 and died January 28, 1872.
According to newspaper reports written in the 1930’s Ann was investigated
at the time of George’s death. She was suspected of poisoning George. After the reading of George’s will where Ann
did not inherit, the investigation did not proceed further.
