The Descendants of John Dagg & Sarah Hodgins

John Dagg was born in Tipperary in about 1803, and died in Shawville, Que. in 1877.  He married  Sarah Hodgins.  [Ed. Note:  The marriage of John Dagg and Sarah Hodgins is recorded in the Diocese of the Killaloe register, for Modreeny Parish.  The actual date of the marriage was not recorded, but  A. Murray Robertson, who examined the files, indicates that the event is recorded amongst other marriages dated in 1828.]

 

This family history has been put together piece by piece.   John Dagg immigrated to Range 11, township of Clarendon,  Pontiac Co., Quebec from County Tipperary, Ireland in the 1850s after the census of 1851. There is no mention of Sarah (Hodgins) Dagg in any census or as a burial in the Anglican Records of the Pontiac parishes.  This leads one to believe that she died in Ireland or en route to Canada.  One son was married in 1853 in Clarendon so quite possibly the family arrived in late 1851 or in 1852.  From the tombstone erected by son William in the Village Cemetery, Shawville the dates of John’s life are 1803 to 1877.  Church records show that John Dagg died on March 15, 1877. 

 

From  a descendant of son William  M., I was told that John’s son Richard returned from Australia to settle the father’s estate.  This would fit as Richard Dagg appears on the 1861 and 1881 Canadian census but not the 1871 census as he emigrated to Australia in 1870 with his sister Ann her husband Charles Dagg, s/o George Dagg & Rosanna Stewart, and Charles’ brothers George and William.  Descendants in Australia indicate that Ann and Charles Dagg were cousins.  From Australian family members, I found out that Ann Dagg was a daughter of John Dagg and Sarah Hodgins.  Canadian marriage records of children list the parents as John and Sarah Dagg or just the father as John Dagg.

I.                     William  M. Dagg born April 29, 1829 Newtown, Modreeny, Ireland and died in 1898 in Clarendon, Quebec.  He married Ann Hodgins b. 1834 Clarendon to Pioneer John Hodgins and Susan Palmer on March 25, 1853 in Clarendon Anglican Parish.  They had 10 children and a home child that was adopted as per the census records.  William Dagg is buried at St. Matthew’s Cemetery, Charteris, Quebec.

A.                  John Dagg b. February 6, 1856 in Clarendon and d. January 4, 1912.  He married Helena Jones, b. 1862 and d. September 8, 1908  d/o Nathan Jones and Annie Shaw, on December 28, 1881 in Clarendon Anglican Parish.  They had 4 children.

1.                    William John Dagg b. May 6, 1883 and d 1968.  On September 21, 1909, he married Maria Tippins b. 1889 and died 1951.  They had 4 children

2.                    Nathan Little Dagg b. July 7, 1885, d 1971. He married Anne Pearl Johnston b. 1891 and d. 1982.  They had 5 children.

3.                    Anna Maria Dagg b. May 18, 1877 She married Nelson Angus.  They had 1 child. 

4.                    James Wycliffe Dagg b. September 26, 1895 married Isabella Barclay b. Dumferline, Scotland on June 28, 1922

 

B.                   Richard Thomas Dagg b. February 12, 1859 d. January 28, 1866 Clarendon

C.                   Elisa Ellen Dagg b. August 27, 1862.  On January 10, 1883 in Clarendon Parish she married Richard Hazzard s/o Richard Hazzard and Annie Crozier.  They had 9 children.

D.                  Susanna Dagg b. August 27, 1862 Clarendon. She was married twice.  First marriage on April 26, 1881 to Archibald Greer b. January 18, 1851 Clarendon d. March 26, 1888 s/o Archibald Greer and Mary Richardson. This marriage had 3 children.  Second marriage on December 16, 1891 to William  Henry Howard b. November 13, 1856 Clarendon s/o John Howard and Mary Ann Hodgins (d/o Pioneer James Hodgins and Elizabeth Dagg) This marriage had 4 children.

2.                    Archibald Greer b. 1884 d. January 23, 1931 unknown wife.  Had a son as per tombstone St Matthew’s Charteris, William Kenneth Greer b. March 6, 1913, d. March 13, 1913

4.                    Mary Mildred Howard b. April 22, 1893 d. 1937.  On October 3, 1913 she married Robert John Wall b. 1875, d. 1963 s/o William Wall and Sophia Jones.  Both buried at St. Matthew’s Charteris.  They had 5 children. 

5.                    Thomas Alfred Howard b. September 9, 1895.  On September 20, 1940 he married Ella Corrigan.

6.                    Susan Ida Howard b. August 31, 1897

E.                   William Dagg b. 1865 Clarendon On July 4, 1888 he married Eleanor Jane Walsh b. 1867 d/o John Walsh and Mary Doherty.  They had 5 children.

II.                   Thomas Dagg b. February 13, 1831, Newtown Modreeny, Tipperary, Ireland married Honorah (Nora) Carroll b. 1832.  They resided in the township of Bristol, Pontiac County, Quebec.  Apparently Thomas never became a Roman Catholic as that was the religion of Honorah Carroll.  Their children with the exception of one son were baptized Roman Catholic.  Family lore was that every Sunday Honorah and the children took the horse and buggy to attend mass, while Thomas had to walk the seven miles to the Anglican church.  They had 6 children and 1 home child.

1.                    Catherine Dagg married John McCauley s/o Daniel McCauley (descendant of George Dagg & Mary Connelly) & Mary Smith.  They raised a nephew of Catherine’s.

V.                   George Dagg, aka Buck-tooth George Dagg, b. 1840 Ireland. On March 21, 1865 at Christ Church, Huntley, Carleton Co., Ontario, he married Rebecca Spearman.  Note he appears along with his father on the 1871 census no mention of his wife in census or in church records of Clarendon. 

 

VI.                 Ann Dagg b. 1843 Ireland d. February 15, 1899 Killarney, Queensland, Australia.  On  June 17, 1860 married Charles Dagg s/o George Dagg & Rosanna Stewart  b. 1839 Clarendon, Quebec, d. 1922 Australia  (note have sometimes seen Charles Percy but not in church records of Clarendon)

 

Charles Dagg, his wife Ann and their children emigrated to Australia in 1870, aboard the ship 'Royal Dane'.  Also emigrating on the same ship were Charles' brothers George and William, as well as Ann's brother Richard Dagg.  (Ed. Note - the Royal Dane arrived on November 19, 1870 in Rockhampton]
