* This file intersects with the family of John Dagg and Jane Jones, of Clarendon, Quebec.  William’s son Thomas is known to have emigrated to Canada in about 1850, with his uncle John Dagg (m. Jane Jones), information gleaned from Australian immigration documents for William Dagg . This file is tightly woven amalgam of interlinking research by Kel Dagg, Jann Callaghan Cullen and Dr. John Dugdale.  To present the individual researcher separately only dilutes the overall integrity of the family file as a whole.

William Dagg was born approx. 1802, in Modreeny, Tipperary. He was the son of Thomas and Sarah Dagg.   He married Catherine Hayes, on November 23, 1824.  She was born approx. 1801 in Tipperary.  She was the daughter of George and Anne Hayes of Lackeen Park.   After their marriage, William and Catherine remained in the Modreeny area for thirty years.  Two years after their oldest son George emigrated to Australia, they decided to join him.

William, Catherine and their children went to Australia from Plymouth on the “Caroline”, leaving  July 8, 1854 and arriving in Sydney October 13, 1854.  William joined his son George in the horse carrying business.  Catherine died Oct. 19, 1874.   William attested on Catherine’s death certificate that at the time of his wife’s death, they had four boys and five girls living.  Family remembers hearing that William and Catherine left behind two sons and one daughter when they left Ireland.  The names of the known children of this couple are presented below. William died Nov. 23, 1877, in Camperdown.  William and Catherine are both buried at Rookwood cemetery, in Sydney.

Children of William Dagg and Catherine Hayes:

1.        George Dagg, baptised Sept. 9, 1827, in Killenane, Modreeny, Ireland, and died on 12 October 1891 at Camperdown, Australia.  He married Eliza Stanley, daughter of Henry Stanley and Susan Long on July 30, 1851.  Eliza was born in about 1835 in Ireland, and died June 18, 1884 in Camperdown.  After their marriage, George and Eliza immediately emigrated to Australia on the ship “Neptune” from Falmouth England arriving in Sydney on 6 or 18 Feb 1852.  George and Eliza are both buried in Balmain (Sydney) Cemetery - now non-existent.

At the time of their migration both Elizabeth’s parents were dead. George’s parents were living in Borris-o-Kane. George was shown as a groom and farm labourer and Elizabeth was a nursemaid. George established a (horse drawn) carrying business in Sydney, a business which his father William joined soon after his own emigration in 1854.   Eliza’s death certificate shows that at the time she died in 1890, she had 3 boys and 3 girls still living.  The names of only four of these are known.

3.        Thomas dagg, born in Tipperary on Jan. 14, 1832.  Thomas emigrated to Canada in about 1850, probably with his Uncle John Dagg and Aunt Jane Jones.  His descendancy is not known at this time.

4.        Jane Dagg, born about 1836, possibly in Dublin.  Conflicting information exists on the parentage of Jane.  Her marriage documentation lists her parents as William Dagg and Catherine Hayes, but on her death certificate her parents are listed as John Dagg, a dairyman of Dublin, and his wife Mary Lyons;  her place of birth is given there as Dublin.  One speculation is that Jane may have been a neice, who was adopted by William and Catherine Dagg and raised as their own.  There are many missing pieces of this puzzle, including when and how did Jane get to Australia.  She does not appear on immigration lists with any of her family.  Jane married Henry Jeffries on August 31, 1857, at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, at Camperdown, in Australia.  Henry was born in about 1832, in Rochester, Kent, England, the son of Charles Jeffries and Martha Hoveright;  he died in 1895.  At the time of their marriage, Henry was listed as  a ‘soap boiler’, living in Newtown.  Jane died Aug. 26, 1933, and is buried at Rookwood cemetery, in Camperdown.  Dr. John Dugdale provided the information on this Jane.

5.        Rosanne ‘Annie’ Dagg, born about 1839, in Ireland, and emigrated to Australia with her parents in 1854. She married Samuel Lewis in 1857.  Rosanne died in Aug. 6, 1907 and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery.  Sam died June 12, 1892.

V.       Thomas Lewis b. 1868.

6.        Sarah Dagg, born about 1841, in Ireland, and emigrated to Australia with her parents in 1854.  She married John Henry Harper on July 14, 1871. Sarah had an unfortunate and brief life; both her children died in infancy, and she herself died only a few years later, on March 5, 1882 at Sydney Hospital.  John died in abut 1894.  They are buried at Rookwood cemetery.

Children of Sarah Dagg and John Henry Harper:

I.         Sarah R. Harper, born in 1875; died in 1876.

II.       John Harper born in 1877; died in 1878.

7.        Eliza Dagg, born about 1843, in Queen’s County, Ireland, and emigrated to Australia with her parents in 1854. She married Charles Coles on Sept. 4, 1860, at St. John’s Glebe, Sydney, Australia.  Charles was born in about 1838, in Huntingshire, England.  Eliza died Sept. 8, 1906.  Charles died June 27, 1917.  They are both buried at Rookwood cemetery, in Sydney.
