Generation No. 1

1.    RICHARD1 DAGG1 was born Abt. 1809 in Tipperary, Ireland, and died 1873 in St. James  Anglican Church, Clandeboye, Ont..  He married ELIZABETH NEIL.  She was born Abt. 1809 in Tipperary, Ireland, and died 1890 in St. James  Anglican Church, Clandeboye, Ont.  (Note*  Canada Company records indicate Richard as holder of deed for Lot 18, Con 4, Biddulph)

Richard and Elizabeth are believed to have emigrated first to Pakenham, Ontario in about 1834.  Records show two children born to a Richard and Eliza Dagg, Ellen Jane (1835) and Elizabeth (1837) in Fitzroy Township, next to Pakenham.  The names of these children are not completely consistent with the names of the known children of  Richard and Elizabeth later of Biddulph, although such inconsistency is not unusual in early records.  Whether or not the Richard and Eliza mentioned in Fitzroy Township are the same Richard and Elizabeth Dagg presented here, is uncertain.

Richard Dagg’s relationship to any of the other Daggs in the area is still undetermined.  However, a letter written by one James G. Dagg, dated Sept. 26, 1925 presents strong evidence that this Richard Dagg was the brother of James Dagg (m. Anne Ardell), of Biddulph.   The letter states that “my father’s father was named James, and he had a brother named Richard”.  He also indicates that his grandfather lived in Biddulph.  (James G.’s natural father died when he was just a baby, and James’ mother married his father’s first cousin, William Dagg, son of James Dagg and Ann Ardell.  This is the ‘father’ he refers to in the letter.)

Children of RICHARD DAGG and ELIZABETH NEIL are:

                   i.    JANE2 DAGG, b. Abt. 1834; She married JOHN DAGG, the son of James Dagg and Ann Ardell, on November 03, 1858, Biddulph, Ontario;  He was b. June 14, 1835, in Tipperary, Ireland.
