Section I – The Descendants of James Dagg and Anne
Ardell

George Dagg, of Victoria, B.C., in the research of the early
generations of this family.]
JAMES1 DAGG was born Abt.
1797 in Tipperary, Ireland, and died October 13, 1842 in Biddulph,
Ontario. He married ANNE ARDELL. She was born Abt. 1804 in
Ireland, and died 1882 in Biddulph, Ontario.
She is buried in the James Dagg plot at Arva, Ontario. James and Anne emigrated to Canada in about
1837, settling briefly in Ernesttown, before moving on to lands near
Biddulph. Seven of the children of James
and Anne are documented. Clint Thompson,
a Dagg researcher who is descended from two different branches of Dagg
families, states definitively that Sarah Ann Dagg was also their child. She married Jonas Poe, and farmed within a
mile of the James Dagg family. I have
included Sarah here as a child to this family as I believe there is enough
supporting evidence to make a definitive identification.
James Dagg was killed in 1842 at the age
of only 45 years, while helping to build the log house of ‘Castleconnel’ Henry
Hodgins. A heavy log fell upon him,
killing him instantly. He is buried in
St. John the Divine churchyard at Arva, a few miles north of London. (His wife
Anne remarried, in 1846, to ‘Castle’ John Hodgins, with whom she had another
child, Henry’Castle’ Hodgins, in 1848.)
James Dagg’s oldest son, Richard Dagg (nicknamed ‘Brough’), inherited
the farm. After his mother’s remarriage,
census records show that 4 of Richard’s younger brothers lived with him at the
old homestead, as did as his maternal grandmother, Catherine Ardell. For more
information on this family, please refer to Ainsley G. Dagg’s “ William Dagg,
his Relatives and Descendants”.

14, 1835 in Modreeny, Tipperary, Ireland, and died 1887 in Biddulph,

Manitoba. He married JOAN BENGOUTH 1890. She was
born in Hensall, Ontario, and died 1945 in Killarney, Manitoba.
“James Dagg was the first of the three Dagg brothers to move to Manitoba. He arrived in Killarney in about 1888, with 25 cents in his pocket and hitched a ride behind a team of oxen driven by a Mr.Magwood. He built a log house and barn on SW 18-2-17. In 1890 James went back to Hensall, Ontario and married Joan Benjouth and then returned to Manitoba. James and Joan lived in that loghouse until 1910 when James built a cement house, which still stands today.
In politics a conservative, in religion he was Church
of England. It was due to his interest
that church services were held in Jaques school with the Rev. Wm. Johnson as
minister. James was a good provider,
lots of home grown meat, three big cheeses bought from Nathan Clark's factory
and three barrels of apples every winter.
Joan made 40 pounds of butter a week which sold for 16 cents a
pound. There were only trails in the
winter; the road to Turtle Mountain
where many people went for wood went right through their yard. People often stayed overnight if caught in
blizzards. Their parents had to leave at
times to fight fires, but the children recall a happy life. James dug the first grave in Killarney
Cemetery. He once shot a bear on Turtle
Mountain.
James died in 1912.
After his death, Joan carried on the best that she could, with the help
of her children. She died in 1945 in her
own bed at the old farm. Wilfred, their
eldest, took over the farm and lived there until he died.”

Beatrice
grew up in the Long River District and attended Lyonshall Church.
“James Allen was educated at Jaques and at
Sanders schools, and attended church at St. Andrews Anglican Church. His father died when he was 14 years old, and
the children, along with their mother, worked the farm. When James (Allen) was old enough, he and
brother Laurence went to Saskatchewan with harvest gangs to make extra
money.
Allen and Beatrice farmed for one year in
the Highview District, then moved to the Sanders District. Allen served as a school trustee for many
years. He also belonged to the IOOF and
curled in Killarney, driving the 12 mile trip by horse and cutter.
In the 1930's they decided to give up the
farm, but the owner advised them to take out a Canadian Farm Loan, as he didn't
want the property back. The Loan Board
felt that 47 cents a bushel for wheat was a good price, even though it cost 45
cents a bushel to harvest. Good weather
and good crops came again and all payments were met. Allen continued farming until his death. Beatrice stayed on for a few years, then
moved into Killarney, but helped on the farm in summers. She grew a large tree garden, and froze and

“Richard, who had become a schoolteacher in
Biddulph, came to Manitoba to join his
brothers James and Frank, who had come to Manitoba to homestead. They sent for brother Dick to come west, as
they said, "The gold was laying on the Prairie", meaning the
wonderful crops of wheat on the virgin soil.
He homesteaded about eleven miles south of Killarney and farmed until he
could claim his land, then sold it to his brother.
Dick and Margaret moved into Killarney, bought the
first public schoolhouse that had been built, and moved it from the original
site to Park Avenue, where they lived for many years. Harry Smith, a carpenter, (who later married
Ivory Dagg ) converted it into a home.
It was eventually torn down so that a street could be built.
Dick started an ice business by cutting ice in
Killarney Lake and selling it to merchants and private homes. The ice was packed in sawdust, and stored in
sheds to be used in ice boxes which served as refrigerators. The ice blocks, three to four feet deep,
would keep all summer. Dick often hired
six men to keep up with his orders. In
the summer, he took any job that was available.
Dick and Margaret had many hardships. In the sixth year of their marriage they lost
their home and all it's contents, but saved their three children. Dick helped build the first steam plant in
Killarney, and he was among
the men who were put on guard after the "Strangler" was jailed in
Killarney in 1927. Even in the hardest
times, the parents had a homemade gift for each child's Christmas stocking. Come rain or shine, Richard Dagg's family
attended the Anglican Church and Sunday school.

was born on July 19, 1901 in London, Ontario
[The information on the family of Harriet
Ellen Dagg was contributed by Mary ‘Ellen’ Poole of Vancouver, BC.]
Harriet (Ettie), Ernest and son,
Alfred (Alf), moved to Edmonton, Alberta about 1914 where Ernest, a carpenter,
became a partner in the firm of Crisp, Poole & Morton (builders). When
Crisp, Poole & Morton sold property the partners retained title to the
mineral rights (perfectly legal at the time) which proved to be financially
beneficial to the families many years later when oil was discovered on one of
the properties. Well traveled, the family also maintained a summer cottage at
Alberta Beach. They joined St. Faith’s
Anglican Church, where Ettie became a staunch member of the W.A. and The
Evening Group. She was also active in
the Amnity Chapter, O.E.S.
Ernest bought and sold real estate,
and in 1916 formed E.R. Poole & Son.
In 1931, he bought a hotel in Cabri, Saskatchewan, a booming prairie
town (until the Depression years the district supported nine grain elevators)
and lived there until the hotel was sold in 1933 when they moved to Carrot
River, Saskatchewan (Alf remained in Cabri to continue manage the Cabri Hotel
and play bridge with ‘The Flat Footed Eight’).
In 1935, Ernest and Ettie moved to Vancouver, B.C.
where he continued to sell real estate. Ernest
had chronic asthma and they thought that the change of climate would
improve his health. But Ernest died March 29, 1937 and Ettie returned to
Edmonton, where she lived with her son and daughter-in-law, helping to care for
her granddaughter, until her death from kidney failure on December 31, 1940.
Her funeral was well attended and her remains were buried in Beechmount
Cemetery.
Well educated, Alfred taught school in Wildwood, Alberta before he decided to go fur trapping in the ‘north’ (Athabasca, Trout Lake, Wabasca, Lesser Slave Lake) during 1924/5 to earn enough money to attend Chicago University, Chicago, Illinois, USA, where he studied at the School of Osteopathy (he was lauded for having the highest entry credits of any student in their history – undoubtedly due to a different Canadian marking system). Unfortunately, an illness interrupted his studies and he was obliged to return to Edmonton. He later was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes and was among the first in Canada to take insulin treatment. In February, 1935, Alfred married Ida Anzla Purcell (b. April 20, 1914) of Cabri, and in August their daughter Mary Ellen Poole was born, to be followed in 1942 by a son, Stuart Purcell Poole. Alfred (then a Boarding-car Inspector on the C.N.R.) died of heart failure April 8, 1953 at the age of 51.
