SA SAMUEL’ DAGG was born Mar/3/1866 in Ops Township, Victoria Co., Ontario, the son of Thomas Dagg and Mary Sawyer.  Asa was named after his mother Mary’s oldest brother, Asa Sawyer, though he was always referred to by the family as ‘Sam’.  Thomas and Mary raised their young family first near Lindsay, then moving over to Mariposa Township a few years later.  By about 1880 the family had moved  to Minden, Ontario.  To view the entire line of Thomas Dagg and Mary Sawyer line, please refer to “The Descendants of William Dagg and Ann McCormick”.

Sam and his siblings all received at least a basic education in reading and writing before leaving school to farm.  In 1876 the farm next to the Daggs was sold to the Sinclair family, new emigrants from Ireland.  Sam literally married the ‘girl-next-door” when, on April 5, 1889, he married MARY ANNE SINCLAIR  daughter of DANIEL SINCLAIR and ISABELLA SINCLAIR.  She was born Dec/25/1868 in County Tyrone, Ireland.  Sam’s younger brother Mead later married Mary Anne’s younger sister Maggie Sinclair; the two young families were very close up until Mead’s untimely death in 1899.

Sam and Mary Ann farmed in Snowden area for a few years after their marriage.  An 1885 map of Dysart Station shows Sam Dagg was living  near the shores of Koshlong Lake.  Becky was born in Minden, in 1898, and by 1901 they had moved to Dysart, in Haliburton Co.  In 1904 they moved west to Bowbells, North Dakota, where Sam applied for homestead lands on August 4, 1904.  The land patent was issued on June 4, 1908 for 80 acres at Township 162, Range 86, just north of Tolley, N.D.

The Daggs eventually left the U.S. in about 1915, to homestead in Flatbush, Alberta.  It was a sad parting, because it meant leaving behind their two daughters, Becky and Bella, who had both married.  True pioneers, the remaining family travelled northwards with all of their few household possessions by covered wagon, probably in the spring of 1914.  The trip took about 50 days.  Sam Dagg received a grant of Land at Range 27, Township 22, Part Section 15 SW, on May 1, 1914.  His son Dick also applied for, and received land in his own right.

Sam and Mary Ann spent the rest of their lives in Flatbush.  Their new farm was a mixed farm, with hay, chickens, cows, sheep and horses.  Three of their sons, Dick, Walter and Harry also spent the remainder of their lives there.  Son George married in Flatbush, but after a few years he moved to Dryden, Ontario, where he spent the rest of his life.  Remaining daughter, Marie, married and moved to Irma, Alta.

Mary Ann died in 1952, the farm was sold, and Sam went to live with his granddaughter Ruby, who took care of him until he died, at age 96.  Even as an old, old man, he was able to continue to saw and pile the wood for the old wood stove.  Sam died in 1962, and was buried on July 4, 1962.  Both Sam and  Mary Ann are buried at the Westlock Town Cemetery, in Westlock, Alberta

In a local Flat Bush history book,” Where Friends and Rivers Meet”,  residents were asked to write down their memories of their families.  The following is paraphrased from an article extracted from the book "Where Friends and Rivers Meet", written by Marjorie (Dagg) Reichwald.

“My Grandmother, Mary Ann Sinclair, raised us until 1952.  Grandma also raised (cousins) Ruby and Nellie (after their mother Myrtle died).  I sure loved Grandma.  She was the one that kept the whole family together and alive.  She knit socks, mitts, hats, scarves, right from scratch - sheared the wool, carded it, spun it, and put it into skeins.  I remember helping her with it.  I loved it.  She did all the canning for the winter, baked the bread, and sewed, in her spare time, dresses for us girls.  She took an old newspaper, and cut out a pattern.  She'd make it in no time on that old treadle machine.   Of course, there was not much choice of fabric, so sometimes our dresses were rather wild.

When Grandma was 86, she fell over the oven door, broke her ribs and they punctured her lungs.    Dad and Uncle Harry had to hitch up the team and sleigh, and go four miles to town to catch the train to Westlock, about 50 miles away.  I remember it was so cold.  We heated up rocks on the cook stove to put in the sleigh to keep her warm.  Grandma died in Westlock Hospital the next day.”

vii.    HARRY DAGG, born about 1909 in North Dakota; d. Aft. 1974, Westlock, Alberta.  Harry never married.  He lived on the farm with his parents until his mother died.  The farm was sold, and Harry got the money, but it was soon gone.  Marjorie Reichwald notes that Harry had a drinking problem.  For a while Harry lived with Walter and his family.  After his brother Dick died in 1966, Harry moved in and lived common-law with Dick's partner Louise Bunton.  Dick and Louise eventually went to a care home in Westlock together, where they died.  Both are buried in Westlock.

D

ANIEL DICK’ DAGG  was born Jun/29/1890 in Snowden, Ontario, and died 1966 in Flatbush, Alberta.  When he was young, he was always called Dan, but some time after he moved back to Canada with his family in 1915, he began to call himself ‘Dick’.  Family lore states that he may have gotten himself into some sort of trouble down in North Dakota, and used another name after that to avoid being found.  His brother George would only say that it was some kind of ‘women trouble’.  Whatever the reason, ‘Dan’ became ‘Dick’ from that point onwards, even using ‘Richard’ on official documents.

After coming to Flatbush in 1914, Dick took up a homestead claim under the name of ‘Richard’ Dagg, on property not far from the farm that his father Sam homesteaded.  Dick was a ‘horse man’, and though he farmed, his main interest was always in stock.  Flatbush students remembered Dick well as the ‘School Bus’ driver.  The bus in question was an old covered wagon drawn by two horses, with a sign tacked onto the back with the words ‘School Bus’ written on it.  In winter, Dick drove the children to and from school in a horse drawn sleigh.

Family stories passed down indicate that Dick served in WWI, but I have been unable to find the official records.  A picture showing Dan (Dick) with his brother George strongly suggests that they were part of a Cavalry unit. The Alberta Mounted Rifles, later the Alberta Dragoons, seem the most likely unit that they would be attached to.

Dick married a local farm girl  (1) MYRTLE FLUNK.  There seems to be a bit of confusion within the family about Myrtle’s last name.  It is shown elsewhere as ‘Funk’, ‘Frunk’, and ‘Flett’.  The exact date of their marriage is not known, nor is it known whether they married in Flatbush or met and married in North Dakota before the move to Canada.  Myrtle became toxaemic during her pregnancy with their last child in 1934.  She developed a serious problem with the veins in her legs, which persisted even after the delivery of the child.  She became progressively worse, until gangrene set in.  She was taken to hospital in Edmonton, where they removed the leg, but it was too late.  She died of blood poisoning on May/25/1935, and is buried in Beechmount Cemetery in Edmonton, Ab.  [There is a ‘Baby Dagg’, buried in 1915 buried nearby.  Records show the baby was buried by social services, but do not indicate who the parents were.]

Dick was unable to raise his children on his own.  His mother Mary Ann took several of the children, and the remainder went into foster care.  Several years later, Dick went down to a horse show in Westlock to buy horses, but came back instead with a new partner.  He met (2) LOUISE MARY BUNTON in about 1937 in Westlock, Alberta, only child of CHESTER BUNTON and MINNIE NEWMAN.  She was born Dec/16/1907 in Indiana, and later moved with her parents to Montana, then Alberta.   Researcher Mel Farnsworth has supplied much of the information on the Farnsworth family.

Louise was the wife of Aaron Farnsworth, and mother of three children by him.  Aaron Farnsworth and Louise were married in 1925, in Piniele, Montana.  In 1926, Aaron and Louise, along with her parents, travelled north to the Flatbush area to claim homestead lands.  The land Aaron was given was not very productive, and he was eventually forced to work an outside job as a road-builder in order to help makes ends meet.  It was about 1932 when Aaron suffered a severe work injury.  He was operating a horse-drawn levelling device when it hit a large rock, flipped him into the back of the startled horse, which kicked him in the head. He was hospitalized long-term, and was not ultimately releasable until 1938.  In the meantime, his wife Louise had met Dick Dagg and had gone to live with him in Flatbush, leaving her three Farnsworth children, Dora (9), Laurence (7), and Chester(5) behind.  The children were put into various family homes, and were not to meet each other, or their mother again until adulthood.  Aaron Farnsworth remained at the hospital, where he worked as the resident electrician until his death in 1966.

Dick and Louise are believed to have had as many as 8 more children, some of whom were removed by Children's services.  There is a ‘Baby Dagg’ grave, and a Bessie Dagg, interred in 1942, in the Lutheran Cemetery in Flatbush that are likely for this family.

EORGE WESLEY DAGG was born Mar/13/1895 in Minden , Ontario.  George grew up in Minden, Ontario, and in his heart this was always his true home.  He attended school there until Grade 5, when his family moved to North Dakota.  Once there George could not continue schooling, but helped with the farm work.

When he was about 20 years old, his family left Bowbells to take up homestead land in northern Alberta, near Flatbush.  George enlisted in the Cavalry during the early days of WWI.  The Alberta Mounted Rifles, later the Alberta Dragoons, seem the most likely unit that they would be attached to.   A group picture taken at that time shows him and his brother Dan (Dick), and two other men in full uniform, with rifles,  their horses tied in a group behind them.  After serving a short stint, George came back to Flatbush to help on the farm.  He also worked on various haying and farm crews to earn income.

These harvesting crews used to work in fields that lay on either side of the railway tracks.  When it was time for a meal, they would walk back to the rail tracks where a specially equipped boxcar was set up to cook and serve meals for the huge crews.   It was while he was on a haying crew in 1917 that he met LILLIAN MARY FRANKLIN.   She was born May/3/1900 in Fir Post Office, Nelson Park Twp., Marshall County, Minnesota daughter of AUGUST FRANKLIN and MARIA Van DEN BROOK.  The 17 year old Lillian was working as a cook and server in the travelling boxcar kitchen.

Lillian reminisced that her parents were not very impressed with her new beau, as they already had a husband in mind for her – a widower in his forties who owned the neighbouring farm.  George, however, was young and handsome with a very commanding presence.  He once showed up at her farm in a flashy two-person buggy and scandalized her parents and their neighbours by driving off with Lillian, at break-neck speed, without a chaperone!  She was dazzled by George’s daring ways. He wouldn’t take no for an answer, and after a whirlwind romance, he informed her parents that Lillian was going to marry him, not the neighbour.  They were married on July 19, 1917 and went immediately to live in Flatbush with his parents.  Their first child was born there in 1918, followed by 2 more in 1920 and 1922.  George and a very pregnant Lillian, with their three small children moved to Dryden, Ontario in the cold and bitter winter of 1923.  The trip was long, cold and arduous.   Their remaining six children were born there.

George worked as a Truck Driver and a bushman.  During the Great Depression, though there was no money,  theirs was a home that was  filled with ‘enough’.  George hunted and fished for food, chopped wood for fuel, while wife Lillian sewed and ironed for others, as well as planted vegetable crops, and harvested wild mushrooms and berries to trade to the Eaton’s store for supplies.  George was a tough man, who lived in tough times, and he could be very demanding of those around him, particularly his family.  Although married and the father of 9 children, George enlisted in WWII.  He was with the Canadian Forestry Division, serving as a Corporal in a lookout tower in the north of Scotland, gathering and transmitting intelligence data on activities in the North Sea throughout the war.

George and Lillian’s marriage did not survive the war, however, and in 1945 Lillian went to Seattle, Washington where her mother was living.  She remained there for the rest of her life, and passed away on Nov/17/1990 in Burnaby, B.C., where she is buried near her family. George remained in Dryden, Ontario.  He met Mabel McCannon, with whom he shared a close relationship until his death.

After he retired from the mill, George worked for many years as a dog-catcher and lived in the toll-booth cottage just outside Dryden.  No dog in his care was ever put down, though, and more than one made its way into his home and at his feet.  Grandpa was a larger-than life figure.  He lived hard, took no crap from anyone, and had a wicked sense of humour.  He was loyal and generous, and made a huge impact in the lives of his many children and grandchildren.  George died at the age of 72, of an accidental gunshot wound, in January of 1969.

Lil grew up as a middle child in a Depression era family of 9 children. Although the family was poor, and the family home incredibly crowded, through hard work and scrimping they always managed to make ends meet.  At the age of 16 Lil went to work in Toronto, where her married sister lived.  Once WW II began she worked at John Inglis, a weapons manufacturing facility.  Later she moved to Thunder Bay to work in the shipyards, where she met, then later married Dan Callaghan.   After the war Lil and Dan lived briefly in St. Catharines, Ont., before eventually moving to Dan's hometown of Fort Frances.  Dan worked in forestry until he got a permanent job at the Paper Mill.

Once the youngest of her children reached school age, Lil started working again, as credit manager for Stedman's department store.  In 1970, Lil and Dan separated and Lil obtained a transfer to Lethbridge, Alberta, in a subsidiary company, Macleods.  After 25 years of continuous service, Lil retired in 1985.  In July of 2000, William Anderson, her partner of many years, passed away.

Lil still resides in Lethbridge, near her children Tom and Carol, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.  The greatest sorrow of her life has been the loss of her eldest child, Tim, of brain cancer in 1983.  Though Mom is a physically tiny woman, her quiet dignity and grace has brought the family through times of hardship and of sorrow.  Mom's silent strength, and her warm and loving nature will keep her always as the heart and soul of our Callaghan clan.

EBECCA BECKY’ DAGG was born Feb/14/1898 in Minden, Ontario.  When she was  6 years old her parents moved the family from Minden, Ontario to a farm just outside Bowbells, North Dakota.  When Becky was 16, she married DAVE DODGE  in 1914 in Bowbells, N. Dakota.  Dave was the son of FINLEY DODGE.  He was born Mar/25/1891 in Little Falls, Minnesota.  Dave’s family moved to the Bowbells area in 1905.  Dave’s obituary states that they were married in 1913, in St. Paul, Minnesota, while Becky’s states they were married in 1913.

After their marriage Dave and Becky lived in St. Paul, Minnesota, where Dave worked as a driver for an oil company.  In the 1920 census, Dave listed his occupation as a Driver for an Oil company.  The ‘History of Burke County’, published 1971, indicates that Dave and Rebecca came to the Kenmare area from St. Paul in 1924.  For a year they lived on the Frank Luckman place and he worked in a coal mine by the lake.  They moved to the Dudley place where they farmed until 1940, when he bought the Oscar Luckman farm.  They moved in to Bowbells in 1947, residing there until Dave’s death on March 24, 1966.  After Dave’s death, Rebecca remained in Bowbells for a few years before moving to Potlach, Idaho to be near her daughter.

As well as the children listed below, Dave and Becky raised their granddaughter Rebecca, the daughter of Shirley Damon.  Shirley was not able to care for the child, so the grandparents took her, and raised her as one of their own.  Becky was very close to Rebecca, and in 1980 she went to Deary, Idaho, to live with her.  Becky died on Jan/26/1984, and was buried at Pinecrest Cemetery, Deary, Idaho.

ARY ANN ‘MARIE’ DAGG was born Oct/28/1901 in Ontario, and died in about 1985 in Irma, Alberta.  She married ALBERT KNUDSON sometime before 1926.  May and Albert operated a store in Flatbush for a time, then later moved to Irma, Alberta, to farm.  May died at the age of 84 years.   She was known as "May" to her family, but chose to call herself "Marie"

Child of MARY ANN (MARIE) DAGG is:

                   i.    LOUIS6 DAGGJones’.  Louis’ date of birth is unknown, but believed to have been some time in the early 1920’s.  Louis was born out-of-wedlock, a scandal in those days, so he was raised for many years by his grandmother, Mary Ann.   Marie later married Albert Knudson and when they moved to Irma, Alberta they took Louis with them.  Mary Ann was quite devastated when May took Louis away.  Marjorie Reichwald remembers that a beautiful oval curved-glass picture of Louis always hung in the living room of Grandma Mary Ann's house, the only photo of any kind in the house.

According to Deb Zajic, Louis did not use the name DAGG once he was in Irma, but used the name Jones.  Louis married, and had two sons, one of whom is called Robert, who still lives in the Irma area.
