There are several DAGG/DACK families who emigrated to Kitley, Ontario, from Co. Wicklow, Ireland.  By far the largest family was that of William Dagg, who emigrated to Kitley in about 1817.  Many, if not most of the other Dagg/Dacks in Kitley were either descended from him, or likely closely related to him.  These relationships are difficult to prove, and so these other Dagg families are presented separately at the end of this document.

My sources of research for the Kitley Daggs  included early church  marriage and baptism records, as well as census data  from 1839 onwards.  Many of these records are from public sources, others from my own research.  From these I worked up family units, and into those family units I entered the corroborating data.  Finally, I tried to reconcile my finished product with existing family tree research which had been gleaned from internet postings and LDS sites.  The result is the best possible amalgam that I can come up with on this family and I am sure will not agree with several other researchers conclusions.

I  understand that there has been a large scale research project done on the William Dagg/Jane Coad family, but I have been unable to track down the original researchers.  I was sent a lot of bits and pieces on this family from a good many different people, but not one of them came from original research, so I do not present it with any great confidence of accuracy.  I must warn the reader NOT to rely upon this family tree as a source of irrefutable data.  Please confirm all research yourself.

SECTION  I)                                    Descendants of William (Dagg) Dack

Generation No. 1

1.  WILLIAM DAGG2  (MATTHEW1 DAGG) was born Abt. 1760 in Agherlowe, County Wicklow, Ireland, and died 1849 in Kitley, Ontario, Canada.   He was the son of Mathew Dagg and his wife Rebecca Dagg.  He married (1) JANE CODD, daughter of George Codd and Rachael (Codd).  She was born October 20, 1765 in County Wicklow, Ireland, and died 1835 in Kitley, Ontario, Canada.  Jane’s surname is alternately seen spelled  as "Coad" or "Code".  *  Information on this line that has been provided by Audrey Franklin is shown in blue print.  He married (2)  Anne Riley, 1836, in Kitley, Ontario.  She was born about 1816.

William is believed to have brought his family to Canada in 1817, aboard the ship, 'The Mary and Bell'.  A journal, written by a preacher on board, relates the death of one Phoebe Dagg, of Agherlow, Wicklow, who was travelling to Canada with her family.  This Phoebe was likely another daughter of William Dagg and Jane Coad.  Audrey Annable Franklin notes that all records for Hester, Mary and Rebecca seem to come to a dead end once they landed in Montreal.

All the early records in Ireland refer to this family as "Dagg".  The "DACK' spelling does not appear until they are in Canada, possibly a spelling error on the part of an early clerk which was perpetuated by later generations.  [* NOTE – I have found a baptismal record dated Oct. 27, 1799 for a William Dagg, son of William and Jane Dagg. He was baptized at St. Fiac’s church, in Carlow, and a notation states the family is from Aghowle.]

Canada Atlas online, shows E. Dack as having Concession IV, Lot 20, Kitley Twp, Leeds Cty, Ont. (c. 1860).  Edward first farmed near Smiths Falls and then continued as the Dack innkeeper of Toledo, Kitley township and as a farmer after his father retired. He lived in his father's stone house that remains on the old Perth road.  It served as a tavern and as home for his four sons and 8 daughters.  His father William was a licensed innkeeper for the years 1824 through 1839, and Edward for the years 1844 and 1845. (from Glen Lockwood's book, pub. 1977)   In 1866, (at nearly 60 years of age), he went to Minnesota, near Stanton, where four of his children had earlier settled.

Children of WILLIAM DACK and MARY WOOD are:

                   i.    MARGARET5 DACK, b. Abt. 1850 (appears in that census only, so died young?)

iii.    JAMES K. DACK, b. June 04, 1856, in Kitley, Ontario, Canada.  James married Effie ??,  born Jul 22, 1870.  The 1901 census lists their names and dates of birth for all.

SECTION  II)                                       Other Daggs in Kitley

1)  ROBERT  DAGG, probably born about 1808, in Ireland. There is a marriage register recording the marriage of this Robert Dagg of Kitley, to an Eliza Robinson of Drummond, dated Nov. 11, 1831.  No other Robert Dagg shows up in the Kitley records, so who was this Robert Dagg, and where did he and Eliza end up?

2)  ROBERT DAGG was born about 1821, in Ireland.  He married Eliza ??, born about 1825 in Ireland.  This family shows up in the 1851 census for Kitley. I have not yet found any records which definitely show when he emigrated to Canada, or exactly how he fits into the William Dagg family above.   As a direct family member, then he is the correct age to fit in only one place, and that is as the son of David Dack and Elizabeth Dodd.   Otherwise, he had to have emigrated separately.  Some time before 1891, this Robert Dagg, then a widower, moved along with two of his sons to Clanwilliam, Manitoba.  This family has consistently retained the use of the ‘DAGG’ spelling.  This family descendancy is covered separately in the section called Daggs of Clanwilliam”.

3)  EDWARD DAGG, born Abt. 1812, married Elizabeth ??.  She was born abt. 1814, in Ireland.  (Pat Hodgkinson’s research suggests that Elizabeth’s last name may have been Codd, daughter of John and Ann Codd.) This family first shows up in the 1861 census for Kitley.  They also appear with all the same members in the 1871 census.  Their connection to the other Dagg (Dack) family of Kitley is unknown.  The birth dates for the children on the censuses would seem to indicate that this family was a later arrival from Ireland, possibly emigrating some time between 1850 and 1854.  In 1861 this family has living with them, the widow Rachael Ireton – possibly a sister or sister-in-law.  The Ireton family seem somehow to be connected to the Robert Dack family, above, as well.

Children of EDWARD DACK and Eliza ?? are:

i.   Hannah DAGG, b. Abt. 1846, Ireland.  Hannah is next found in the 1901 census records, living with her widowed mother and brother Robert.  She is listed as Hannah Corcoran, widow.  Living with her also is her daughter Lizzie Corcoran, aged 22 (b. 1879?)

ii.   Robert DAGG, b. Abt. 1850, Ireland.  The 1901 census indicates that they immigrated about 1853.  His widowed mother is living with him in the 1901 census, so Edward died some time prior to that.  Also living with him is a JOHN DAGG, who is listed as an uncle.  There is no wife listed, so it is presumed that Robert did not marry.

iii.  Abraham DAGG, b. Abt. 1855, Canada.  A marriage record for Abraham Dagg shows his date of birth as 1853.  He married Elizabeth Ferguson on Mar. 16, 1891, in Kitley  There is a death certificate for him dated 12/10/1893.   His mother was living with him in the 1891 census, so his father Edward passed away some time before then.

iv.  Rachael DAGG, b. Abt. 1857, Canada.  Rachael was married on May 18, 1882, in Kitley to George Coad, son of Thomas Coad and Eliza J. Martin. George was born in 1854, and died in 1934, in Kitley.  Information on this line was contributed by Pat Hodgkinson.

Children of RACHAEL DAGG and GEORGE COAD are:

i.         Eliza Jane Coad, born April 10, 1883, and died Nov. 11, 1952.  She married Norman Jones around 1900, in Kitley.

Children of ELIZA COAD and NORMAN JONES are:

a)     Edwin Charles Jones; 1901 - 1968

b)      Clarence William Jones; 1903 - 1977

c)      Clarissa Alma Jones; 1905 - 1980

d)      Milton Lloyd Jones; 1907 - 1969

e)       John Allan ‘Howard’ Jones; 1909 - 1989

f)       Peter James ‘Mansell’ Jones; 1911 - 1973

g)      Joseph Nelson Jones; 1913 - 1987

h)      Ross Oates Jones; 1915 - 1952

i)        Melville Ferguson Jones; 1917 - 1996

j)        Mary Norma Jones; b. 1919

k)      Nina Evelyn Jones;  b. 1923. (had a twin brother who died at birth)

l)       Edna Eileen Jones;  b. 1924

ii.        Thomas William Coad, born July 1, 1887; died April 16, 1944.  He married Nina B. Carl.

Children of THOMAS COAD and NINA CARL are:

a)     Grace Coad

b)      George Coad

c)      Russell Coad

d)      Mary Coad

e)       Stanley Coad

4)  DAVID DACK (Dagg), born about 1835, married Sarah J. ??.  This family first shows up in the 1861 census for Kitley.  David’s connection to the other Dagg (Dack) family of Kitley is unknown, but I suspect he is David, the son of David Dack and Eliza Dodd.

Children of DAVID DACK and Sarah J ?? are:

                   i.    Edward DACK (Dagg) , b. Abt. 1858, Kitley, Leeds.

ii.    Mary A. DaCK (Dagg), b. Abt. 1860, Kitley, Leeds

5)  THOMAS DACK (DAGG), born Abt. 1826, married Jane??.  This family first shows up in the 1861 census for Kitley.  David’s connection to the other Dagg (Dack) family of Kitley is unknown, but I suspect he is Thomas, the son of David Dack and Eliza Dodd.  * In the 1861 census, this family notes the death of two children during the year 1860.  One is a child, age 6 (whooping cough) and the other a child age 1 (cause unknown).

Children of THOMAS DACK and Jane ?? are:

                   i.    Rebecca DAGG, b. Abt. 1858, Kitley, Leeds.

ii.    Robert Dagg, b. Abt. 1860, Kitley, Leeds

6)  WILLIAM DAGG, born Abt. 1857, married Frances??.  She was born about 1858.  This family first shows up in the 1881 census for Kitley.  How William connects to the other Dagg (Dack) family of Kitley is uncertain, as he could be any one of a number of Williams in that time period whose descendancy is uncharted.

Children of WILLIAM DAGG and Frances ?? are:

                   i.    William DAGG, b. Abt. 1879, Kitley, Leeds.
