A Few Words
In the summer of 2001 Todd Elliott
posted a message to the Homestead mailing list asking about the
existence of a Missile Command game for GEOS. Until very recently I
was unaware of such a game (aside from the GeoBASIC sample prog which
I list here as Invasion). The query started a discussion about the
various games for GEOS users. This page is the result of that
discussion.
The recent information I came across included the
game Missile Defense by Volker Goehrke. This game is part of a
collection of 4 disks full of GEOS games that were marketed by a
German company called Markt&Technik in the early 1990's. Todd
told me that the reason he was asking about this game was not because
he is a big game player but because he felt it would make an
interesting GEOS programming project. With the discovery of Missile
Defense he will no longer pursue this exercise.
I have
compiled a listing here of all of the GEOS Games that I have rounded
up over the years after being asked to provide this by a number of
people. Some of these games were mentioned in my article - "Playing
Games with GEOS: enGEOyable Entertainment" in Issue
#20 of
Commodore World magazine.
I make no promises that the info
about each game is 100% accurate. I have used the best sources I had
available including the original magazines, PD disk collections,
Commercial disks and Peter T. Hughes' 1990 GEOS Programs Directory.
If anyone has any further games to add to this list, or different
info on any of these games, please send your info to me
.
Thank You.
Noteworthy
Where the game is freely
distributable I have included it as a download. The name of the game
is a link to the download. The size of the file is indicated in
parentheses (ie - 13 KB) after the name. Where documentation
for the game exists it is available in a separate file on the line
after the game file.
All files have been CONVERTed
(filename.cvt) prior to being made available for download. There are
three exceptions to this and these files have been prepared with
GeoPack. The geoPACKed files (filename.lnx) are marked with an
asterisk in the comments beside the filename (CONVERT was
unable to convert two of the files for some reason and the third file
contains 5 files needed for the program to work).
If you want
to get all of the distributable games easily I have made geoZIPped
versions available near the end of the page.
If you need the
programs to put the files back into GEOS format see the Tools
section.
Listing of GEOS Games
as of October 10, 2009.
Compiled by Bruce Thomas.
You
will, no doubt, be surprised by some of the programmers names that
you will find in this list. They are listed in no particular
order.

GeoZIPped
versions up to and including #37 from the Others category. Files
listed after #37 will need to be downloaded separately until there
are enough to justify making a new all-inclusive ZIP file.
This file contains all of the files from this page in one handy package - geogames.zip (528 KB).
The above all-inclusive ZIP file has been broken down into smaller chunks for people with smaller drives and lower speed modems.
This file contains the LandMark and FreedomWare games - packages.zip (98 KB).
This file contains Others #1 - #8 - othersa.zip (109 KB).
This file contains Others #9 - #17 - othersb.zip (114 KB).
This file contains Others #18 - #29 - othersc.zip (123 KB).
This file contains Others #30 - #37 - othersd.zip (84 KB).
The Zipped file on this page was created with Todd Elliott's GeoZIP V0.8. You can follow this next link to find the download copy of GeoZIP V0.8 .
In order to make use of the geoPACKed files you will need to download geoPACK (11 KB) to unPACK the archive.
Of course, GEOS files can't be uploaded or downloaded in their native format. In order to transfer these files they have to be CONVERTed. If you don't have Convert or GeoConvertE98f you will need a copy.
This BASIC Program (13 KB), when run, will create a GEOS copy of Convert for you. Ignore the '.cvt' extension (it is just there to make your download smoother) and RUN this program from the BASIC prompt on your C= 64. You can then use the generated copy of convert from within GEOS to convert this GEOS Desk Accessory (6 KB) version of Convert.
Once you have the D.A. version of Convert you can use it to convert the geoPack file (11 KB).
In July, 2001 Maurice Randall of Click Here Software took over GEOS distribution rights from Creative Micro Designs (CMD). Click Here Software also distributes the three RUN GEOS collection disks and GeoBASIC.
