paper cut antelope          Ursula Hogg Freeman's Scrapbooks

I have two of Ursula Hogg Freeman's scrapbooks. The first dated 1833 which she signed Ursula Hogg and the second dated 1835 signed Ursula Freeman.  These scrapbooks are a collection of poems, newspaper clippings and diary entries some of which were written by Ursula. Inserted into the diaries are miscellaneous sketches, leaves, flowers and other items. The intricately cut paper "Antelope" which I scanned at about 2/3 of it's original size and inserted at the top left of this page is an example.

Ursula's scrapbooks were lost to the family for many years.  They were rescued from a shop in Berkshire by Susana Adams a couple of years ago.  She very kindly sent them to me in December 2000. Thank you, Susana!!!

I have scanned them so that others can enjoy them.

The scans for the most part are quite clear so you should be able to read them.  Just remember that most of this is written in early English where a 'ss' is written as 'fs', many of the v's are written as b's and some of Ursula's words that start with P's look more like F's.  At some point in the future I may try and transcribe some or all of it, but time does not permit me to do that at the moment.  If there is a particular page that you are having trouble interpreting let me know and I will give it a try.

Ursula Hogg was baptized the 3rd of November 1815 at the Clavering Place Scotch Church in Newcastle 'on Tyne, Northumberland, England. She was the 3rd child of Thomas Hogg and Ann Robinson. Thomas was a silk mercer. She was married on 22 Oct. 1835 to George Freeman who was a bank clerk at the Sir M.W. Ridley and Co. Bank. They had no children.

Ursula was married to my 2nd grand Uncle, making her a relative by marriage.  She was also my 1st cousin 5 times removed as  her father Thomas Hogg was a brother of my 4th great grandfather John Hogg.
