"Local Biography Vol 57(miscellaneous collection of newspaper cuttings, notes etc) No 9 Patrick (Paddy) Freeman"
'Just as 'Jesmond Dene' is known far beyond the confines of Tyneside, so too is the name 'Paddy Freeman' recognised as being linked with the Dene and one of its most important buildings, the Old Mill. The first Patrick Freeman (this person) had a son Patrick Freeman who had a son Patrick Freeman, which makes identification of the different members of the family rather difficult.
It is believed that the first Patrick was of the Freeman family who farmed and milled on Windmill hill, Gateshead, and he took over the High Heaton Farm and Mill some time in 1795. He would at that time be a tenant of the landowner, Sir Matthew White Ridley, who lived at Heaton Hall, and in various directories of the 1820's and 1830's he is recorded as working the farm of about 279 acres and also acting as 'cornmiller'. For those days it was a large tenancy and no doubt profitable due to the high price of grain during the Napoleonic Wars, and intermittently tereafter, until the Repeal of the Corn Laws in 1846 which allowed imported grain to pour into the country. This effectively put an end to the use of both watermills and windmills for grinding home-grown corn. Patrick I is thought to have died in 1840, although evidence of the exact date is difficult to confirm.
The first national census of 1841 records the occupier of the farm as Patrick Freeman, aged 20, presumably Patrick II-but this census was notoriously inaccurate where ages of individuals were concerened. In the next census ten years later, Patrick II has aged to 35 and lives in the farm with his wife Ann, aged 30, and Patrick III, aged 6. He is listed a 'farmer and cornmiller' giving the size of the farm as 270 acres: there were six labourers employed, three of whom were resident, and one domestic servant. In Ward's Directory of 1855 he is still shown as farmer and miller, but in 1856 the mill is tenanted by one named Pigg, who used it to convert spoled grain into pig food called pollards. By 1857 the mill could appear to be occupied by John Charlton who used the machinery to grind flinto into powder: this material was taken by horse and cart down to the Potteries at the mouth of the Ouseburn where it was worked into the clay to give added hardness. It is interesting to note that Haddricks Mill was also owned Charlton, although it may have gone out of use by the late 1850's(?DATE).
In 1861 the census shows Patrick II as 44, Ann 39, and Patrick III 16, still farming the area but without the mill, which was shortly to be incorporated into the private grounds of Jesmond Dene. This is the last we
hear of the Freemans for in 1871 the census shows Isaac Dodd, aged 34, occupying the farm and working only 50 acres. The land was acquired by Sir
William Armstrong, who when he made his gift of Jesmond Dene to the city in 1883, required that the two cottages on the north side of the farm should be pulled down and rebuilt on the other side of the road. These buildings, with farmhouse itself, were pulled down in the 1960's when the houses in Anscomb Gardens were erected on the farmyard site.'
