CPF Internet Resource Reviewer’s List of Popular French Software – BACKGROUND – Nov.10, 2000
CPF is Canadian Parents for French educational opportunities, a non-profit volunteer based organization. I am the volunteer CPF Internet Resource Reviewer. CPF's web site is http://www.cpf.ca
Recently, the availability of French computer software and French on
the Internet has been expanding. In 1997 in response to
requests from parents of French Immersion and Core French students
for help in these areas, we began to keep lists of popular
French software and French Internet addresses.
We have been sharing our list of Popular French Software with and gathering
some information from three electronic mailing
lists (listservs) in particular, which we were invited to join. The
lists are:
immersion-fr@sfu.ca - An e-mail mailing
list, begun by Professor André Obadia, of the Education Department
at
Simon Fraser University, for French immersion teachers
and those with a related interest.
french-connection - An e-mail mailing
list, begun by Elizabeth Murphy, a
French immersion Principal. This list is for French
as a 2nd language teachers. Ended 2003.
lim-a@tc.umn.edu - An e-mailing list, begun by The
Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA)
at The University of Minnesota, to meet the needs
of parents, teachers, administrators, researchers, and others involved
with language immersion education in North, South,
and Central America (covers all target languages).
We have also been gathering information from the CPF National newsletter
where advertisers sometimes include software of
interest.
Please excuse that the CPF lists are not in a polished professional
format, but rather are a volunteer work in progress. The CPF
Popular French Software list includes general information related to
the software.
Prior to the updated CPF Popular French Software List being on the Internet
(Sep. 1998) it was sent regularly to all CPF
Directors and provincial Branches with e-mail and less frequently to
others. Since 1999 all CPF provincial Branches have
Internet access to the List and only updates of special interest are
sent.
French software and Internet addresses with audio are of particular
interest to French Immersion and Core French students as
they provide an opportunity to listen to a French speaker.
Any assistance that might be provided regarding these lists would be very much appreciated.
