If your child has gotten to know an e-mail pal better and you are considering using e-mail with a voice recording attached, remember that it might seem to assure the e-mail pal is a child to hear a child's voice, however, there is a risk the child is fronting for a pedophile and there is a risk a pedophile is intercepting the voice recordings.

Voice Recording Attachment

FYI here are the CPF Internet Resource Reviewer's notes to Jan. 10/98 re e-mail with a voice
recording attached:

OPENING TO LISTEN TO AN E-MAIL VOICE RECORDING ATTACHMENT

I have Netscape Communicator 4. with e-mail and the e-mail comes in with
an attachment file box and I just click on the icon by the attachment
file name and it seems to be within the Netscape software that it is
'opened' as a small window appears titled 'Netscape' with a set of
standard play/stop/rewind buttons. The window opens and plays the
recording automatically, then I can click on the play button to hear it
again. I'm guessing this is all dependant on a system's sound card,
configuration, e-mail software and so forth.

Elizabeth Murphy, a Newfoundland French immersion teacher, advises that
if you are using Netscape to read e-mail and you want to hear .wav files
(sound files), you will need to get the Netscape plug-in "Media Player"
which can probably be found at the Netscape site under plug ins (it is
free but you have to download it).

Note - my system did not require this Media Player step, but maybe with
Netscape Communicator it was already there or is using something else.

CREATING A VOICE RECORDING FILE TO ATTACH TO AN E-MAIL

I started at the Windows 95 desktop and clicked on 'Start', then clicked
on 'Programs', then pointed to 'Accessories', then pointed to
'Multimedia', then clicked on 'Sound Recorder', and I got a window
titled 'Sound - Sound Recorder' with a set of standard
play/stop/rewind/record buttons and a 'File' option where I could save
the recording (it saved as .wav file). The options on my system under ‘Accessories’ may be
unique to IBM Aptiva Personal Computers, but other systems with sound cards likely have some sound recording software as well.

When doing the e-mail to send I used the usual attach file option and
indicated the .wav file.

The above notes are on how to do e-mail with a voice recording attached for free. The following is the website for Voice E-mail 4.0 software for purchase http://www.bonzi.com/netscape/homepage.htm
