One advantage of e-mail pals over traditional pen pals is you do not begin by giving out your home mailing address to a stranger.

E-mail pals can be found either at school via class matching or at home individually.

With class matching it is more likely the e-mail pal is truly a student.

Remember not to give out personal information as cautioned in Section 0530. Internet Safety Guidelines

If your child has gotten to know an e-mail pal better and you are considering using e-mail with a voice recording attached, remember that it might seem to assure the e-mail pal is a child to hear a child's voice, however, there is a risk the child is fronting for a pedophile and there is a risk a pedophile is intercepting the voice recordings. If you have gotten to know the e-mail pal better and are considering using  a web camera with video conferencing software like MS Netmeeting, remember that it might seem to assure the e-mail pal is a child to see interactive video of a child, however, there is a risk the child is fronting for a pedophile and there is a risk a pedophile is intercepting the video. French Immersion Electronic Pen Pals and Caution about Exchanging Personal Information

If you are a parent of a young french immersion student who has a new electronic pen pal and that pen pal has sent their address and phone number and you wish to follow the advice to not send or to be cautious about sending personal information on the Internet and your french is not that good, the following (prepared by a french immersion teacher) is a polite way to add a P.S. to your child’s e-mail to say the parent is teaching the child to be cautious about personal information on the Internet and you want your child to wait and get to know the pen pal better before sending personal information (and that could be sent by mail via a third party address, not e-mail) and that you hope the pen pal understands and in the meantime they can correspond on the Internet.

P.S.  On vous remercie beaucoup pour votre adresse et votre numéro de téléphone. Ma mère est en train d’apprendre comment utiliser l’internet et on m’a conseillé de prendre des précautions pour éviter le contact avec des “étrangers méchants” qui peuvent me blesser. Ma mère désire que j’attends un peu avant que je te donne des renseignements personnels comme mon adresse et mon numéro de téléphone. Je veux bien mieux te connaître et j’espère que tu me comprends et que tu peux être patiente. En attendant, on peut correspondre par l’internet!
