Many local libraries subscribe to several online databases of
information, and make them available at home via their web sites
to  anyone with their library card. Some you'll recognize,
like the entire collection of Oxford English
Dictionaries. One of particular interest is
is EbscoHost, which puts online the entire contents
of several thousand journals both academic and
popular.

These databases show what the Web can deliver
if you're willing to pay subscription fees. But if
your library is paying the subscription, then to
you they're free sites!

While you're at your library,
ask if they're joining the LibraryLookup system:
http://weblog.infoworld.com/udell/stories/2002/12/11/librarylookup.html
If you encounter an interesting book on the Web --
on Amazon.com or Chapters.com, for example -- you
feed the ISBN number into LibraryLookup and find
out if your local library has a copy.
