Each year in early April, at the Roundhouse in Vancouver, ArtStarts in Schools hosts a showcase of performers – mostly English speaking.  Due to the growing popularity of French Immersion, however, the organizers have recognized that there is a “critical mass” comprised of CPF chapters, school administrators and school districts who have been keenly interested in knowing who they could contract to perform in their schools.

L’Arsenal à musique: Intro to classical and contemporary music. (Quebec) Suitable for primary grades.  Nice audience rapport.  Use of puppetry.
http://www.arsenal.ca

Gerald Laroche: Harmonica & storytelling.  (Manitoba) Primary to secondary.  A stunningly talented musician if you appreciate the harmonica – he plays one that is ½ inch long, and one that is four feet long, plus the usual sizes.  Storytelling aspect very interesting – relates to First Nations fables and Manitoba history.  Best suited to smaller audiences with the ability to listen quietly.

Le Moulin à Musique: All about violins (Quebec) Middle/junior to secondary.  Great intro to violins but limited topic for most elementary students.  Best suited to smaller audiences.  Could be difficult to keep middle school aged students engaged.

Marc Tardif: Magician (Quebec) Primary to middle school (Grade 8).   Good level of audience participation – very talented magician.  French language excellent, clear to understand.  Tours often in BC.

Anne Glover: Storytelling using string figures. (Victoria) Primary to secondary.  Anne was the MC for the French showcase so I haven’t actually seen her performance but her audience rapport and her command of French was excellent.

Theatre de L'Aubergine: Clown theatre (Quebec) Primary, intermediate.  I thoroughly enjoyed this show by the former artistic director of the Cirque de Soleil but I think he has a challenging job – keeping young audiences entertained.  He could work more at involving the children in the audience which is really important.

Prince Diabate: musician of the kora (21-stringed lute); music of West Africa. (Los Angeles) Secondary.  Amazing musician – this show is definitely not suitable for the very young.  His music is sophisticated and with the traditional drums as back-up, the feet are definitely tapping.
