There is a time-honoured saying:
This is crap, and anybody who runs a FAQ page on any subject knows it. This page is a collection of actual questions that I have personally received that are too vague, stupid, badly formatted, or downright silly to bother answering.
Unfortunately, I have already deleted a few really good ones - at that time, it never occurred to me to save them as cannon fodder. The runner-up was a question about a Chevy truck transmission. The all-time stupid question winner, in my book was a question about a gasoline-powered weed whacker. (Yes, a weed whacker. Hey, I couldn't make this up if I wanted to, I don't have the imagination!)
I'm also too busy to put more than a fraction of the actual questions on this page. Still, this collection should still prove pretty entertaining. They are in their original format, with original spelling mistakes. Enjoy!

The Mirage is not even sold in Canada. Neither is the Evolution. How would I know? (Thanks to those people that caught my original mis-statement about the Mirage not being available in the U.S.A.: however, AFAIK only base models for the Mirage and EVO are available, and under different names. Discussions about the Mirage and EVO are not really within the scope of this FAQ.)

Hi there, I'm emailing you, because You're the only emails on the site... I just bought a 92 Plymouth Laser RS turbo from the SF Auction. About five blocks down the road the battery was dead. We'll luckily enough there was a used parts place right there, and I got a battery to get me further down the way. I'm telling you this because when the guy put the battery into the car he said it looked like I need a new alternator, and good knows what else.

I have a 96 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS, engine code 420A automatic transmission. I am trying to find out what other long blocks can be used with only moderate engine compartment changes, or no changes. I would prefer to use the new EVO. long block if it can be done. I would appreciate any information I can get on this subject.
P.S. I also need to know what the engine and transmission specifications are.
What do you expect from me, a transcription of the shop manual? Are you too cheap to buy your own, or too lazy?

hello i just sold my mustang gt in search of a car to drive all year round. unfortunately i know nothing about dsms. today i looked at a 1991 talon tsi awd with 85k. i gave the car a quick look over and it seemed pretty clean. after taking it for a test drive i was also very happy. the only thing i noticed was that it sounded like a heat shield was rattling underneath when the car was revved above idle. what other potential problems should i look for next time i see the car? can u walk me through the procedures for looking for something amiss? whats a reasonable price to pay? i dont want to put a lot of money into it, just drive it. should i think twice about getting myself into this car because it might be a money pit? thank you very much for you help

Hi Sean! I totally appreciate the work that goes into a website. I'm in a band and do our site, so I know how thankless it can be. We get no work from it and never a compliment. Now that I've kissed your butt, I have a few questions for someone who knows DSM trannys, be it you or one of your friends. I have a '92 Talon with 2L non-turbo motor that runs excellent and is in fantastic condition. The Automatic died and I want to swap the whole 5 speed setup into it from a similar boneyard '92 Talon with 2L non-turbo motor. I just can't see spending over a grand fixing this automatic when I can get the whole stick setup with pedals and shifter for $400. The questions I have are....
Q: Will I run into anything unforseen, like the crank hole being different or incompatible?

I own a '90 Eclipse and I recently took it in for brake work. They found problems with the drive line, cv joint and a few other things they replaced. After spending $1500. I picked the car up only to find it had a new HORRIBLE problem! When ever I accelerate where the RPM is between 2500 - 3000 I get this weird shudder problem and it feels as if my front end is bouncing! I brought the car back in and was told I needed an alignment. I was told the problem was fixed. Picked it up and it was NOT. I brought it back. The problem this time, they said, was that my tires were worn unevenly and this would not hurt the car on the trip I was about to take, but I eventually would need new tires. About 75 miles into the trip, we couldn't stand it anymore and even though I did not have it in my budget to do so, I bought new tires and had them balanced. Much to my dissapointment, this did nothing at all to fix the problem!! I brought the car in again and told them I wanted it fixed! They kept it for three days and claimed to have replaced the parts they put in the first time. They told me it was fixed, no more bounce. I picked it up again. How anyone could keep missing this is beyond me, but it wasn't one bit better. (two other people have driven this car before/after the work was done and KNOW it was not this way before). I brought it in again, this time they said they would take it to the dealer. They called me and said the dealer drove it around the block and said he could tell it needs a new transmission! There was no problem even remotely connected to the one I'm having now BEFORE I took it in to this shop! Has anyone else had this problem? My boyfriend says he thinks it's to do with the 'tork'??? I'm at my whits end, broke and ready to ring this mechanics neck! Please help!!

i recently had new brakes, clapiers, and rotors+pads installed all the
way around and yesterday it was real nice out so i had my windows down
and i am riding around town and when i applied my brakes i heard a
clicking noise but it doesn't do it all the time but 90%-95% of the time
it does another problem i noticed was when i was going through
town at 20-30mph i hear a squeaking noise coming from my car it seams
to be coming from either the rear or one of my wheels

I have a 91 gsx an i am having a problem. The car seems like it is missing at idle and i have changed the plugs-wires-and i am still not sure. i can get the rpm's up to about 5000 and it just starts to spit and sputter and shut down. and i also think that my wastegate actuator is trashed cause the rod does not move at all. i disconnect the rod from the wastegate mechanisim to see if that was the problem. and my plugs are turning into charcoal. they turn black and get some white stuff on them then the car runs worse. i replaced the exh manifold, 2.5 downpipe, cat elim, 2.5 cat back,K&N, hacked maf, and i don't know what to do. i had ngk non platinum plugs and i changed to splitfire and i gapped them at around 0.025 , is that ok? i have brand new belden wires on the car, i ahve no check engine light on! the car runs like complete crap and idles irrattic and i have no power. i cleaned all the intake pipes out except the intercooler itself. so to sum it up i can pt the peddle to the floor and around 5 to 6 r's it just cuts off or shuts down. i have no power and the factory boost gauge seems like it goes up real fast but maybe due to new exh, my wastegate vaccume thinggy rod wont work, it is rusted beyond belief, and i am about to blow the car up. can you help me out here Please i just wanna go fast...thanks [name deleted]

Hi I installed a HKS SQV on my 98 GS-T about a month I notice that my stock boost gauge is not going all the way down when my car is on idle so I installed a Greddy 60mm mech. boost gauge and I talked to a tech from greddy and they told me that my boost gauge should be reading between 500 to 760 when my car is on idle and I notice when my car is on idle it reads just a little above 500. Its between 400 and 500. Is there a fix to this?

I have a 1g 1992 fwd Plymouth Laser RS with the 2.0 DOHC (nonturbo) that has an automatic transmission thats completely shot. I wanted to know, if I could by any means put the fwd automatic transmission from the 1g turbo on my nonturbo engine. I pretty much just need to know:
1.Will it bolt onto the block?
2.Will the turbo transmissions' torque converter fit my cars' NT engine?
3.If it does fit would my ecu information plugs that let the ecu communicate between itself and the tranny for trouble codes etc. fit up with the plugs that transmit that information from the turbo tranny?
4.If so will the ecu recognize the transmission and communicate with it properly?
5.Will the gear ratios in the turbo make my spedometer inaccurate(make it faster or slower than before?), will it accept my stock tach(and still be accurate as it was?)Even though factory tachs arent completely accurate.
6.Does the turbo tranny look for the presence of a turbocharger and/or any communication/info from a turbocharger at all for trouble codes etc?
7.Would the turbo trannys' gear ratio differences (if any)or the turbo trannys' torque converter require higher rpms to drive the output shafts that put power to the wheels at the same speed as the original nonturbo transmission?
8.Are the axle splines that go into the transmission to drive the wheels different on the turbo transmission?(simply put will the input splines on my axles line up to fit the turbo transmissions output splines that power the wheels?)
9.I am hoping the turbo tranny will be more durable(handle more power)and last longer than the previous 3 trannies that have been in my car(according to the previous owner the transmission in the car is the 3rd that's been in it)
If you know the answers to any of my many questions please help me. I am building this car to be a naturally aspirated performance 1g DSM, it is my only car so its also an everyday driver so I could use your answers as soon as you can, but, I don't like to rush people so please if you do answer this dont feel that Im trying to rush the answers or demand them from you because I realize that you may not know the answers to my questions but you definetly know more about 1g DSMs(particularly turbos) than I currently know.

dear sean,having just purchased a 92 gto.id like to complement you on your comprehensive web site.i have just spent the last 2 hours reading it.here in ireland there is absolutely no support network for gto owners and i would very much apprieciate your advice.i bought my car as a repairable jap import with "electrical problems!"everything worked perfectly.just the engine would not start(turn over no probs)with the help of jeff lucious,s web page i was able to carry out the diagnostic procedure and found no reading for ecu.i then replaced the ecu module located in centre console.mounted verticly in front of gear lever.i also replaced ecm unit located in left side of passenger footwell.(both units from same doner car)i am sure my car had been a none runner at least 2 months.to my delight it started on first turn of the key.instantly.i allowed it to run for 3/4 min while i checked for leaks,smells etc.found engine a little tappity at first,but ticking almost disappeared as engine warmed up.(rear bank ticking)shut off.let cool.checked again.thought engine was unusualy hot for such a short run time.(temp gauge never passed half way)engine idled perfect but a series of misfires followed.after a very short,slow test drive(not exceeding 3000rpm)i am almost sure my engine is not firing on all cylinders.i can find nobody who has any knowledge of these fantastic cars in ireland and going by your website,as we say here."your my only man"if you can find the time to give me some advice.i would be very grateful. many thanks.[deleted]

hello, i have a question which is not particularily explained in here, i bought a 1991 eagle talon tsi (fwd) a couple months ago and have not been able to run right, at first it kept dieing but that was melted wires on fuel sending unit, then had the common idle surge problem bought a used iac off ebay which wound up being less screwed up then mine but still blown, but while i had it sort of running i took it for an emissions test and it failed horrible (5.2% c.o, 188 hydrocarbons) but nox passed, i figured it was o2 sensor and replaced it also replaced iac with factory rebuild, new tps, (everything idle related) finally got it idleing relatively normal and i took it for another e-test, and there was almost no improvement , i went on to check injectors, vaccumn lines etc. everything in the manual i could think of to check i have checked, however i canno figure out the problem, i was reading the 1000 questions and i read something about the computer not storing codes because because of a fuse which controls radio memory footlights, and ecu backup memory, i have all 3 problems but could not find the fuse for this? also if that fuse is blown could it be possible for causins this problem?, or is it more likely the computer itsself , or non computer related all together??/, i dunno i have been trying for months have read every page of the shop manuals 30 times and am still stumped, thanks in advance and any input would be appreciated

First off i LOVE LOVE LOVE the 2g engine bay display and labeling you did. Helped me out like you hae no ide i didint know a thing about my 95 talon tsi until i stubled across this page. Amazing little tool it was. But now hear lies the problem, my baby(the talon) is sold and i baught a 2002 gti with over 10g into it. the tal ran like 14.5 and the gti like 12.3 and this one is a stick so.....but i dont know athing about the vw engine bay. You think maybe by anychance you could do another engine bay review on the gti as well?? It would be GREATLY!!! GREATLY!! appreciated. No website has it ive been lookin for at least a weak. Hi my name is [deleted] Im not sure why you help people with this stuff,but I for one am gratfull.I dont know what you want to hear or need to hear but the fact of the matter is people like me need people like you.I am very mechanically inclined and think I know the answer to this question.Here goes my engine has a mild knock on startup and disappaears right after that,then its lifters as usual.I suspect its bearings as I dont think a ristpin knock would disapear like that.Ive never been in the bottom of one of theese 1st gen 20 turbo engins but Im pretty sure the same things still apply.I know the bottom end on theese things is much stronger than the norm,especially the pistons,thus the doubt that the knock is rist pin related.I would greatly appreciate a second openion.Today Ill replace the lifters with the revised version and timing belt as well.The balencer shaft belt has been broken for about 300 miles.Odd,The low end tourqe seems to have increased,as well as high.I expected to see an improvement on high end but low end improvement blue my mind.Not a lot mind you but the fact that I could tell was a surprise.If I keep the RPMS below 5000 do you think she will be OK or do I need to replace this belt as well. Wow, that's specific: a 'real bad sound'. That should narrow it RIGHT down.
I have a 91 Eagle Talon 5 speed turbo. I pushed in the clutch and heard a snap and felt instant loss of pressure. I had a new clutch put in and it still won't dissengage. Everything looks like it is working properly as far as the hydrolics and the clutch goes but when you go to shift into a gear it grinds... is it the syncrometer? If so is there a way to fix it or do I have to buy a new transmission?

why wouldn't it be the fan relay switch? Here's my plight. 2 days of long driving at 120kms plus, I get into town, putting around the car over heats, fan doesn't come on why?

I'm converting my 1993 Eagle Talon 1.8L to a 1990 Fwd turbo. I've got the engine and transmission
installed. I took out the computer and wiring harness of the '93 and installed the '90 harness. All the
connections match up on the engine, but I'm running into a problem with the interior wiring. Do I have to change
the fuse box and the interior harness as well? Can you possible point me in the right direction?

my car had a symptom of the hot starts but now it just wont run. it will start idle for 4 maybe 6 seconds rough then die tried a new computer not the fix tried air flow senser same result. diagnostic codes read collant temp senser,isc,air flow,barometric pressure any hints or tips please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

I have a ' 97 GST, convertible. It broke. I heard that tops are converted by ASC in Chicago?, and that they do the same for BMW. I have found nothing everywhere about anything. Any ideas? thanks,

Has your transmission free-wheeled (no engagement) when you turn on the overdrive switch? It runs fine without the OD, but when I click the switch, the engine revs to the sky!!! Scary!! What could cause this? It is a '94 1.8L BTW.

I've been on the internet for about 2 hours and cant seem to find an answer so im hopeing you can help me. I know that the 4g63 engine is in both the Eagle Talon and the Mitsubishi Evo 8, but my question was would the same pistons work on both cars taking in consideration that the Evo's engine sits reverse?

Hi Sean, My name is [deleted and I own 2 dsm's. A 1995 Eclipse GS, and I just purchased a 1991 Plymouth Laser RS, both are 5spd. I have two questions for you. But before I ask I just wanted to tell you that your site is awesome! I LOVE IT, Just found it the other day and ive already visited it a million times. Just thought you should know, but back to my problems..lol
First question- On the 1G laser. Heres the deal, I just bought it yesterday..Im driving it up my street for the first time, pull in the driveway and the thing is overheating like a bitch. My boyfriend poped the hood and theyre was steem coming from around where the coolant bottle and thermostat area is. So today he replaced the thermostat and added some coolant, We took it for a drive around the block and them tempature gauge started rising back up again..Also the RPMs idle really low! What do you think it can be? The only thing I know about the car is it has comp cams in it if that changes your answer at all, probably not but just thought I should let you know!
Now for the 2G 95 eclipse..This story is a little longer and I really need your help on it, So why dont you tell me what you think on the laser first and then ill tell you about my eclipse! THANKS ALOT FOR ALL YOUR HELP!!!! [DELETED]

I have a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu and once I go far enough for it to warm up it starts spitting and sputtering and backfiring and will only go about 10 to 15 mph until it quits and has to cool off. It does not run hot though only gets warm. I would really appreciate your input.
My advice: Sell it. It's a stupid car anyway.

Hi my name is [deleted] and I recently got a good deal on a set of wheels and tires from a major dealer and one of them has a couple small scratches on it.(hence the good buy) I was told by the shop I could easily fix this and could have them again for a good buy they are hard to see so I took them but would like to try and fix them. They are Polished alluminum custom wheels from well (Les SWabs). Can you advise me how to repair them ?? thanks for any help

I just inherited what I consider to be a lemon from a relative. I’m wondering exactly what I’m in for if I try to repair it (1990 Honda Prelude si manual 5 spd 188,000 mi). The car burns oil considerably...seems to burn faster with more highway driving if that makes sense...don’t think it’s just increased distance. Also there is a constant ‘click-click’ or ‘tap-tap’ under the hood that persists and is not remedied under different idling conditions (i.e. hot or cold engine doesn’t matter). Sometimes, arbitrarily upon idling, the noise will wane a little and then at the next stop will resume at its normal level. The noise isn’t as noticeable and is accelerated while in gear and with throttle depressed. Potentially the lifters I am told?? I appreciate your time and any feedback you can supply.
