Literature from Leonidio
Did you know that many famous writers have come from Leonidio?
One well known Poet is Kostas Ouranis (Κώστας Ουράνης).
Born in 1890 and lived until 1953, this cosmopolitan poet with his flighty use of words not only was influenced by other poets and his war-torn past, but he was also very much part of the neo-romantic school of thought. His name is actually Kostas Niarhos, but he also changed his name to Nearhos. Both his parents were from Kinourias, his father Nikolas was from Kounoupia, and his mother Angeliki Giannousi was from Leonidio. Kostas spent most of his childhood growing up in Leonidio and finished primary school there.
After finishing Junior High in Nafplio and High School in Polis, he went on to live and work in Athens at the age of eighteen at "the Acropolis" of Gavrilidis. He was then to move on to further his studies in the West, but chose this opportunity to travel and explore various countries and live life. In Paris he came across student life and decided to spend the next two years in Switzerland where he ended up meeting his future wife Manouella Santiago from Portugal. He later divorced and was remarried to author/critic Eleni Negriponti. In 1920 he was appointed Consul General of Lisbon, Spain and in 1924 he settled in Athens to become a Journalist.
Director of the newspaper "Free Speech" (Elefteros Logos), and contributing writer to the newspapers "Elefteros Tipos", "Elefteros Vima", and "Ethniko Kirika" from the United States, he took on many other roles such as columnist, editor, correspondent or special delegate on various assignments all over the world. Unfortunately his health was quite unsettled with all his travels, only worsening after the war, limiting his movement to the areas close to his home. Ultimately he ended up at the sanatorium called "Papanikolaou", at Melissia Attikis, where he died of a heart attack on June 12, 1953.
Some of his poems are written below.
