At this junction, most of the hardest work is behind you. Of total 800 meter gain to Garibaldi Lake, 750 meters are now behind you. If you turn left to Taylor Meadows, a fair amount of elevation is still gained in a relatively short period of time. Straight towards the lakes, and the trail remains relatively gentle the rest of the way.
Taking the direct route, go straight and about 100 meters after the
junction, an unmarked trail bears off to the right. This takes you
to the Barrier lookout which overlooks the valley you have just ascended.
During the late summer, the Barrier Lake will also have run-off which cascades
into a spectacular waterfall.

At other times of the year, there is no river, as Barrier lake drains through natural cracks and subterranean fissures, re-emerging low in the valley as Rubble Creek. This lookout is a great place for lunch, a rest and a spectacular view.

After your stop at the lookout, hike the short distance back to the main trail and continue east. In a matter of minutes you will reach Barrier Lake. Several creeks and streams here, or the lake itself, will provide you with an opportunity to refill depleted water bottles if necessary. Again, ensure you treat your water.
