"Kamloops has a premier nudist beach at Mission Flats Park. This is
the last piece of land north of Mission Flats Road before you reach
the weigh scales of the city dump. Nice sandy beaches, cool inviting
waters, hot summer weather." [Anonymous, Nov 1998]
Information needed: I need a more precise location
of parking area and clothing-optional area. There is supposed to be a dog park
in this area... Where is it in relation to the clothing-optional beach?
Directions: "Take the turnoff to the Kamloops City Centre.
Head down East Battle Street, which leads directly onto Victoria
Street (the main drag). Go under the Overlander Bridge and turn onto
Mission Flats Road at the first stop lights west of the bridge. This
road will take you past the Weyerhaeuser Pulp Mill. Follow the
chainlink fence past the settling ponds. Near the end turn right at
the pump house. Disregard the Weyerhaeuser 'No Trespassing' sign
(they own a small section east of the sign and not quite to the
beach) and make your way down to the beach along any of the three
trails in your vehicle. " [T.P., Aug 2002]
Comment: "Not so much a 'park' as a bit of scrubland perched
on the riverbank at the edge of Weyerhaeueser's mill property. We
visited on a warm, sunny Saturday afternoon and there were only about
half a dozen cars parked on the adjacent roadway--perhaps because
Weyerhaeueser has posted large signs warning people against entry to
the area without authorization. When we arrived, a couple of
authoritarian-looking men parked in an unmarked sedan seemed to be
keeping a very close eye on the parking area and trailhead, so we
decided not to stay and can't report on the condition of the beach
itself." [Randy, Aug 1999]
Comment: "This beach is usually subject to flooding during the
late spring to early summer. High water has a tendency to hide the
beautiful white sand at times. The summer of '99 was unusual in that
melting snow of the past winter did not begin to receed until late
August. (Record winter snow levels produces record summer water
levels.) The naturists/nudists seem to have a good relationship with
the city. Mission Flats Beach is a part of an undeveloped city park.
Local nudists/naturists with the support of the Okanagan Shuswap
Nudist Society and the cooperation of the city of Kamloops organized
a successful park clean-up drive in the early spring. The park is
regularly patrolled by Kamloops Park Rangers during the summer."
[Ted, Sep 1999]
Comment: "I went to Mission Flats park this summer and found
it to be a very nice sandy secluded spot to be nude. I talked with
some people there and found it was a bit early to wade out to the
island. There seem to be a good mix of males and females at the
beach." [Jeff, Aug 2000]
Comment: "My wife & I visited Mission Flats on 24
July....What a beautiful spot. Comments: * Access fine, trails cut up
by 4wd's, so bad for low clearance vehicles * No Gestapo presence *
Mix of sexes and ages, no hassles * Water warm, sandy beach....could
walk across to Island * a few mosquitoes * This is the finest and
most accessible beach we've seen since our holiday in Formentara some
years ago." [J & M, Jul 2003]
Comment: "Some barricades have been erected block car access
to the waterfront. There is an area that has been left open as a
parking lot and there are no signs posted saying you are to keep out.
Depending on which part of the flats you are going to, you can still
get to the waterfront within a 0.5 km to 1 km walk." [Eric, Apr
2004]
Comment: "Visited this location today (a hot day), and
discovered only middle-aged men plus men lurking throughout the
trees. Quite displeased, as my girlfriend and I were hoping to use
this location as C.O. No other couples present. Maybe it was just a
bad day... " [Mike, Jul 2006]
Comment: "Excellent beach! Several men & women, lots of
room for everyone. [Photo]"

"In Vernon, go south along Kal Lake Road. At the end, turn right onto
Westkal Rd and follow that to its dead end. Walk ten feet up the bank
to the railroad track, and follow that for about 800 feet south.
There is quite a stretch of nudism to be found there."
[Anonymous, 1986.] As with any railway tracks, stay on the
side of the tracks. Walking on them is illegal and can be
dangerous.
"There is not a lot of water front area to put your towel down on.
There is one pair of spots [Photo
2a, 2b]
within about 1/2km that would each accommodate 2-3 people if they
are agreeable. Otherwise, the next spot [Photo
3a, 3b] is
about 4.5-5km down the lake (35 min walk down the tracks)."
[Eric, July 2005]
Merv Krull sent pictures of another small, rocky beach [Photo
1a, 1c],
but I'm not sure how far it is along the trail.
Update: "Another area has been built right next to 'Area #2'
that you have on your web page. The two are about the same size, but
the new part does not
have any shade as the other area does." [Eric, Aug 2005]
Comment: "The only problem with that section of shore is that
it is mostly rocky and if you are looking for a good section of beach
to lay on you won't find it, although if you like the feeling of a
warm rock on your back then your in luck." [J.A., 1997]
Comment: "I'm not sure if it's the 'official' name for the
beach, but the locals refer to it as White Rock (presumably in
reference to the biggest of the rocks there). Residential
subdivisions are starting to encroach on the location, but the
location is still quite 'hidden' from the nearest, and it doesn't
look like they will build any closer for a while." [M.T.,
1998]
Comment: "White rock beach used to be very popular but houses
have been built above it on the hillside. I visited the beach a
couple of years ago and it was completely grown over and abandoned."
[D.D., May 2000]
Comment: "White Rock is pretty much abandoned. My wife and I
were there this summer and there was nobody around at all, completely
deserted." [R.N., Nov 2001]
Comment: "Numerous small rocky and pebble beaches. We (a
couple) went every chance for the last two summers and are looking
forward to another great year. Houses are encroaching so we need to
have this beach sanctioned as clothing-optional. Beach needs more
women. Gay use at extreme end. Also a popular dog walk. Beautiful
clean water. Average useage 10-20 can accomodate 50 or more."
[M.S., Feb 2005]
Comment: "Beautiful small spot... not a long hike...easy, but
really rocky...someone has put some time and effort into fixing up
the spots I have seen (two distinct beaches possibly a thrid). The
water is beautiful, warm and clear. It is a somewhat popular spot,
easily accessable. There are some other spots further down the shore
line, too--some easy, some not--that look like they have been used by
various others. I'll be going back now that I know where it's at."
[Muse, Aug 2005]
Comment: "Awesome lake for swimming and scenery....I went mid week so
only a few people, but nice people." [Sept 2007]
Comment: "I paddled my kayak along this area
and saw many naturists soaking up the sun. Other naturist canoe and kayakers
along this edge. The naturist area found was South beginning at about these GPS
waypoints. You will see a large rock and South of the rock
you will find the secluded areas. Enjoy!" [G.T.L., Summer 2008]

VERNON: Captain's Beach
(Ellison
Provincial Park) --- Unlikely.
"The three public beaches at Ellison Park are nicer, sandy beaches.
From north to south they are named North Beach (Otter Bay), South
Beach, and Sandy Beach (or Pet Beach). The beach in question is south
of these, at the southern edge of the park, and is known as Captain's
beach by some. The park staff I talked to said no nude use was
sanctioned and they were not aware of other nude use of the beach -
some partiers have used the site and left a mess for the staff to
clean up.
I went to this beach several days in a row in July 2004, over the
Canada Day long weekend. I saw no nude use of the beach in that time
and would not describe it as a nude beach, rather just a semi-private
spot to swim. I only saw 3 other people on the shore, diving off the
rocks into Okanagan Lake. The beach is small, overgrown and rocky.
The cliffs are nice to sit on and dive from. There was a fair amount
of boat traffic, making it somewhat less than private. At one point I
could see 8 boats within 200 m of shore. It is a nice spot to have a
nude swim and dive off the rocks if you are not looking for sand or
complete privacy." [Bob, July 2004]
Directions: From Vernon, follow the OK Landing Road west to
Ellison Park. From the parking lot, walk through the campground to
the "Pet Beach Trail" at the south end of the park. When the trail
splits, take the left fork toward the south boundary of the park.
Comment: "I haven't found any nudists, but there is a place
that can be walked...just south of the southernmost bay (of two) near
an old rock quarry. " [Anonymous, 1986.]
Comment: "I don't have much to say about. I found it but it
seems to be densely wooded with a lot of shrubs around and probably
not the best spot to tan." [J.A., 1997]
Comment: "There is a very large developement taking place
between the park and the area south of the beach. There are signs all
over the place and houses being built so it is not a place that I
would go to be nude." [Eric, Apr 2005]

KELOWNA: Cedar Creek (Beau Sejour)
Beach -- Questionable. [Photo]
[Photo] (GPS: N49 47.903 W119 31.738)
Once known as "Beau Sejour" because of an adjacent vineyard, "Cedar
Creek" appears to be the current name. The beach is quite rocky so
bring a beach chair or a thick beach mat. Some of the regulars have
cleared paths in the water so it's not so hard on the feet to go in
for a swim. The water is much cleaner than other Okanagan beaches,
with hardly any milfoil. There are several levelled, raised areas at
the lakeshore, with concrete tables, and the City of Kelowna has
provided two portable outhouses. The beach is quite clean of any
debris, with most sunbathers making use of the trash cans on site.
There is a lot of boat and dog walking traffic in the area, and many
gawkers, but most of the time they are not a bother
Directions: From Route 97 (Harvey Ave) head south on Pandosy
Street which will become Lakeshore Road. Continuing on Lakeshore for
6km (intersection with Barnaby), turn right to stay on Lakeshore. The
beach is located 3km later as the road descends abruptly to a gate
marked "boat launch". (If you come to a sign for a Boy Scout Camp on
the left, you have driven too far.)
Since parking is very limited, you may want to stop at the top of the
hill, across from the main entrance to St. Hubert's Vineyard. From
the parking lot walk down the steps to the beach. The CO portion is
more to the right as you face the water. [Last info:
2001]
Comment: "Beau Sejour now has the official blessing of the
Kelowna city council and is a legal clothing-optional area. They have
upgraded the area with washrooms and picnic tables. However, the best
news is that they have closed the road to all vehicles, so the
gawkers have been forced out of their cars and onto their feet! The
beach is surprisingly busy on a hot summer weekend and attracts
significant numbers of men and women. The south end of the beach is
primarily heterosexual and the gays tend to take over the north end,
which can be quite cruisy at times, so beware if you are bringing
your children." [D.G., Nov 1998]
Comment: "A folding chair wouldn't be a bad idea as the beach
is fairly rocky. Also, since it is on the east side of the lake,
later in the day is better (once the sun has gotten past the trees on
the hill). Newcomers should be aware that the beach is popular for
dog owners as apparently it is one of the few that allow unleashed
dogs. They seem to use the beach for dog walking early in the day."
[M.J. May 1999]
Comment: "Throughout this past summer there was a mix of men
and women and families, though mostly men, at Cedar Creek Park. There
was an open house held at this site. Apparently developers want to
build houses overlooking the area. This would undoubtedly mean the
demise of c-o status. I sure hope this doesn't go through. It would
be a real loss to the hundreds of people, myself included, who enjoy
this beach every summer." [C.B., Oct 2001]
Comment: "Well, I was there today (22 June) and the trees are
mostly gone, there is a hill top extension to the beach park that
overlooks the beach and has a very big parking lot. A clear view of
the beach from the road, I waived to a road flag person who was
looking down at me. The dog owners association walk their dogs there.
There is new housing and more being constructed above and beside the
beach. To borrow a few words for a popular tune: And another one
bites the dust!" [T.P., June 2003]
Comment: "Perhaps T.P. hit the beach on a bad day. My wife and
I went to this beach on June 30 and July 1, 2003. There were around
10 to 20 nude bathers at any given time and there was a good mix of
men and women. The dog walkers did not seem to be bothered or shocked
by the nudity, as this is a well known nude area in the community. I
did not notice any less trees but it has been awhile since I was last
there. In any event, I could not see the road and we really enjoyed
ourselves. Definitely, it is still well used and enjoyed." [D.G.,
July 2003]
Update: "I have been attending
this beach since 1994, and it has gone downhill since that time.
Nearby residents have complained about the nudity, and as a result,
the City of Kelowna has erected signage indicating that 'Nudity is
not condoned or allowed', and 'Violators may be proscecuted.' Having
said that, I have seen police and by-law enforcement officers patrol
the area and only hand out tickets to people who were drinking
alcohol, and not nudists. Also, this is designated as a 'dog park'
and every year there are more dogs with negligent owners who do not
keep their dogs under control and/or pick up after them. I continue
to go nude at this beach despite the changes, and have not been
harassed by law enforcement. This beach is not for the shy nudist, as
there are many people who walk their dogs among the nudists, along
and into the lake, and not many trees/bushes for cover." [J.O.,
Jul 2004]
Comment: "I first went to the beach about a month ago and
while I saw no one else nude and a lot of foot traffic, I stripped
and enjoyed the sun. I was expecting lots of comments but, did not
get a one which suprised me given the number of people walking dogs
and families using the beach. I have been several times since and
they was seven CO the last time and the clothed people seemed to take
it in stride. Very nice beach. This beach is the way every other
beach in the country should be." [Eric., Jul 2005]
Comment: "Cedar Creek in Kelowna continues to have its problems with dog
walkers. This year the police have been known to patrol on foot and by Zodiak
and demand that the bathers put on their clothes. Not a very relaxing private
place to relax au naturel."
[Lake Man, Oct 2006]
Comment: "This beach is still listed as nudist at foundlocally.com,
but it's officially posted as not clothing optional."
[A.C., Aug 2009]
KELOWNA: Lakeshore/Bertram Creek Park (GPS: N49
47.144 W119 33.524)
Lower parking lot: Follow the directions for Cedar Creek and
continue on Lakeshore Road until you come to Bertram Creek Park at
the sharp left-hand bend. Follow the driveway to the bottom of the
hill. This beach is NOT clothing-optional,but you may be able to find
a secluded spot for a quick dip.
Upper parking lot: Follow the directions for Cedar Creek and
continue on Lakeshore Road until you come to Bertram Creek Park at
the sharp left-hand bend. Keep going and you will find a second
parking lot. After parking, "walk down a grassy hill to where a bunch
of trails lead off. Take the one to the left. When you have reached
the shoreline you will notice a rock projection to the right. The CO
area is to the left of the rock. There are a couple of picnic tables
and the area is a bit rocky with gravel. It is fairly private and I
have gone there to swim nude a few times myself. The best time is the
late evening or early morning when the beach is less populated."
[Kevin, June 1998] [Last info May 2010]
Comment: "Visitors should know that the footpath leading
directly down to the supposed CO area gets very steep in places, so
proper footwear is a good idea. For those who like a wooded setting,
the CO beach is a very pretty little piece of waterfront, shielded by
trees which provide welcome shade on a hot day--but which also block
out any direct sun from the beachfront until well into the afternoon.
On the warm, sunny weekend we visited, the clothed crowd had
completely taken over even this relatively secluded piece of the
park's beach, and we saw no one in the nude. Note that the park
closes and all gates are locked daily at dusk." [Randy, Aug
1999]
KELOWNA: Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park. (GPS: N49
46.885 W119 35.48)
Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park has a couple of hundered meters of lake shore
that sees relatively little use. In early summer, when the lake is high, it
is mostly rough waterfront terrain with few good spots, but in the heat of
summer the beach improves, although the better spots get used by non-nudists.
The hill is steep behind the beach (similar to Cedar Creek or Wreck Beach).
Directions: "Drive south on Lakeshore Road in Kelowna (past Bertram
Creek Park and a residential area) to Okanagan Mountain Provincial Park
and look for a dirt parking lot beside the road on your right.
Two trails head down to beach. Either go straight down or keep to the left
if you want a less-steep trail. Once at the bottom, go either left or right
to find your spot." [youngcanadianbuck@yahoo.com,
May 2010]
Comment: "Because its a provincial park and just out of
city imits, I have never had a problem going nude...other than a boat or two
hanging out in front. Some people who used to go to Cedar Creek go here now." [youngcanadian
buck@yahoo.com, May 2010]
Comment: "For the last year I have been hiking the park
nude. I have met a few people on the trails but, so far no
one has complained and a few have stopped to talk." [Eric, June 2010]
KELOWNA: Poplar Point Drive Power
Station.
"Drive down Ellis to the intersection at Knox Mountain. Take a
left and follow Poplar Point Drive to the end. You should see a gate
that blocks a drive going downhill. Walk down the hill towards the
power buildings. You will notice a couple of docks and some rocky
beach area to your left. When you reach the bottom of the drive go to
the right between a building and the rock face. Jump down onto the
beach and continue to the right, past some trees. Your path will be
blocked by a rock projection, but it is low enough that you can climb
over it, or you can wade around it in the water. Once past this
outcropping, the area is completely private. There are nice big rocks
to bake on and clear water to swim in. You are unlikely to encounter
other people here." [Kevin, July 1998]
Penticton.
NARAMATA: Naramata Road (Probably the
same as 3 Mile Beach).
"Also, when I followed the Naramata road to Naramata (from
Penticton), right at the bottom of the cliffs is a road heading
North. A mile or so further was a small nude beach.. The lake police
came and told us to put our swimsuits on (they tried to look
serious), and went away. Of course, many people immediately stripped
again." [Anonymous, 1978.]
Comment: "Naramata Road and Three Mile Beach are in fact the
same place. In order to get to the beach you must take BOTH Naramata
Road and Three Mile Rd." [D.G., Nov 1998]
PENTICTON: Three Mile Beach.
[Map]
(GPS: N49 32.331 W119 34.469)
Just 10 minutes from downtown Penticton, toward Naramata, the beach
is very small...a short sandy area just past the willow tree. If you
follow the trail just beyond the willow beach it takes you to another
beach with much coarser gravel...still a good area but bring a lawn
chair to sit on. The beach sees a fair size crowd during cherry
picking season (early July) then tapers off a bit with mostly locals
the rest of the summer." [Anonymous, 1997.]
Directions: "Take Front Street from downtown Penticton. Follow
it to Vancouver Avenue which climbs a fairly steep hill.. Stay on the
main road as it winds through the orchards and subdivisions until you
see a riding stable on the right side of the road. Now stay to the
left past the stables and continue on to another stable on the left
this time. You are now on Naramata Road. Stay on this road until you
see Three Mile Road on the left hand side where there is a discreet
little restaurant on the left. Turn down the road just before the
restaurant. Park at the foot of the hill (down by the lake) where
there is room for 15-20 vehicles. The CO area is to the right
(northeast) as you face the lake (ONLY BEYOND THE WILLOW TREE).
Comment: "Naramata Road and Three Mile Beach are in fact the
same place. In order to get to the beach you must take BOTH Naramata
Road and Three Mile Rd. When you get to the bottom of Three Mile Rd.
there is a small parking lot. The nude area is to the right. Walk
down the stairs and you will find a nice stretch of sandy beach. This
is NOT the nude area!...The nude area is on the other side of the
willow tree and the beach is much narrower. This beach is almost
exclusively male. I have been going here for years and have only seen
a few women this last summer. The gay and straight men seem to get
along very well, although the gays seem to own the north part of the
beach exclusively. It is a nice area, which surprisingly is not busy.
A sunny afternoon will find 10 to 20 people there." [D.G., Nov
1998]
Comment: "The area has a new staircase (courtesy of the BC
government) leading from the parking lot to the beach. However, as a
result of high water, the nude part (past the willow tree) has become
less and less desirable. Consequently, on many days the nudists move
out onto the main beach and have received no opposition. This is a
lovely nudist friendly area that is slowly becoming more popular. It
is one of the nicest nude areas in the Okanagan." [D.G., Feb
2000]
Update: I have heard that property has been sold and nude use
may no longer be possible. [Aug 2006]
Comment: "I went to Three Mile a few times this summer, and
while there is a rumour that it will close due to the sale nothing is
official. A wonderful place to hang out." [Lake Man, Oct
2006]
Update: "Wonderful place. Nice mix of people, I spent 3 full
days there, July 14-18, Wear thongs (flip-flops) or old sneakers as
it is a little rocky." [Shelley, July 2007]
Update: "Alive and well! Lots of visitors out at 3-mile beach
over the summer and August long weekend. RCMP were out there last
week checking for campers (no camping allowed on beach), said a
friendly "Hello" to the naturists there and left." [G.L., Aug
2007]
Update: "Was there twice in July of 2007, water was a little high so the
actual beach area was limited a bit. Still a great place to get sun though, enjoyed
the warmth and the water. No houses or other interference, in fact two older
couples walked thru and chatted with me for awhile. They were seniors tourists
from the American midwest and were quite fascinated with the freedom of the nudeness(no
they did not but thats ok, they were very nice)." [Doug, Sep 2007]
Update: "The summer of 2009 has seen many changes to the nude area of
this beach, and not all for the better. Two people have taken it upon themselves
to do a major landscape change on the upper hillside, cutting down some
of the fine old olive trees that provided much needed shade for private spots.
Some of the old timers of this beach say it has lost its natural charm." [Beach

"Penticton B.C. has an unofficial nudebeach and C.O. hiking trail on
Okanagan Lake. (By that I mean to say that a few nudists frequent
it). The best time for sunshine there is from 11:00am until
evening---the mountain blocks the sun until then. Nice, quiet,
secluded area." [G.H., Feb 2005]
Directions: "Drive North on Main Street and turn right onto
Front Street near the North end of Main St. Go into the round-about
at the end of Front Street and turn onto Marina Way (towards Okanagan
Lake). At the end of Marina Way is another small round-about, just
before the Penticton Yacht Club entrance. Drive to the end of the
Yacht Club Road. Behind the Pyacht club tennis courts is a trail
called 'Esplanade Trail'. Follow the trail until it reaches the lake.

"The C.O. areas are mostly on the east side of the bay and north of
the bay, although some nude use has been right in the bay on the
south. I have spotted nude mud-bathers here in the past as well (lots
of clay). Nude hiking use is mostly at the north end of the bay and
nearly all the way to 3 Mile beach. I have passed by 'textiles' while
hiking nude and have received a 'hello' or a wave but never a
negative response. I have frequented this area since the 70's. You
may encounter the odd camper, but I would discourage any camping
there as camping is not allowed, and the city by-law enforcement has
been known to remove camping gear." [G.H., Feb 2007]
Good tanning areas along the lake edge are as follows:
N49 30.975 W119 34.794 [2Rocks] you will recognize this spot
2 very large rocks/boulders side-by-side sandy area.
N49 30.936 W119 34.823 [sandy beach area]
N49 30.766 W119 34.875 [clay slide area, mud-bathers seen
here]
N49 31.016 W119 34.765 [bare-point] a point/small bay area
some shade trees and good spot to park a canoe.
N49 31.269 W119 34.639 [tan rock]
Note: "If you continue to follow the beach eventually it will
take you to 3Mile nudebeach also, 3Mile is a largely populated beach
compared. It is easier, however, to access 3Mile from Naramata road."

Comment: "Here is a map with
markers and photos of the trail area and Okanagan South/East side C/O areas."

PENTICTON: Coady's Cabana.
Coady's Cabana has a beatiful looking garden and pool. While it is not actually
a naturist facility, it is well suited to a naturist vacation. The owners confirm
that they have had naturists stay there periodically. [July 2010]
