WINNIPEG, MANITOBA: Patricia Beach. [Photo] (GPS: N50 25.711 W96 35.74)
"Located on Lake Winnipeg, this beach has been a favourite spot for nudists for at least thirty years. The main beach area, located in a provincial park, is a regular clothed beach, but there is a large area to the north of the main beach where, although public nudity is not officially permitted by the authorities, it has been tolerated for quite a few years with no harassment from the local police. It is frequented by a hundred or more nudists on any given hot summer weekend."
Directions: "Go north on Hwy 59 about 64 km from the Perimeter Highway to Provincial Road 319. There are signs near the intersection clearly indicating the way to the beach. Turn left on 319 (a gravel road) and go about 7 km. There is a turn to the right, and about 400 metres further there is a park gate. A small fee is required to enter the park if you don't have a season park pass. Past the gate, go to the right and follow the lane to the very end of the last parking area (about 1km). From the parking area walk over the sand dunes to the beach. Turn right on the beach and walk about 200 metres to the end of the main beach. There is a pathway through some bushes to the right for a few metres, then you will find yourself on an open, sandy area with a beautiful stretch of beach on magnificent Lake Winnipeg. Here you can get naked!" [H.R., 1998]
Note: The nude sections of Patricia and Beaconia Beaches are only 250m apart by water, but more than 10km by land.
Update: "Over the last several years a rather undesireable element has started to invade our beach: people who behave in an inappropriate manner. It seems a group of swingers from Winnipeg are increasingly frequenting the beach and often engaging in sexual activity, sometimes in full view of everyone. I've been told that Patricia Beach is often mentioned on some swi nger's websites. There have been confrontations between these undesireables and those who prefer the family image, but many of these undesireables persist. The beach has changed drastically in the last few years. We've had incredibly wet, stormy summers recently, and the shoreline has been badly eroded by high water and violent wind storms that create monstrous waves on the lake. Some of the sand dunes have been completely obliterated." [H.R., July 2010]

WINNIPEG, MANITOBA: Beaconia Beach. (Parking: N50 26.669 W96 34.68) (Nude area: N50 25.869 W96 35.617)
"A little bit north of Patricia Beach, Beaconia is also a favourite spot for nudists. One area of this beach is traditionally frequented by gay men, but a major proportion of the beach is used by heterosexuals and still further north there is a regular clothed beach. The gays and heteros get along just fine with each other, although each group tends to keep to themselves."
Directions: "On Hwy. 59, instead of turning on Provincial Road 319 to Patricia Beach, continue on north for another 4 or 5 minutes until you come to P.R. 500. Turn left onto this road, go about 2 km, and you will come to the tiny hamlet of Beaconia. Continue on straight ahead to a point where the road curves to the right. Another smaller gravel road continues straight ahead. Follow this road for about another 2 km and you will come to a parking area. From here walk over the dunes onto the beach and turn left. It is about a 1 km walk from here (the clothed beach) to the nudist area, and there are some coarse gravelly sections of beach along the way, so it is advisable to wear some good hiking footwear. It's well worth the hike, however, as you will find yourself on a beautiful, curved stretch of beach about 0.5 km in length with fine, white sand."
Note:
"Patricia Beach and Beaconia Beach are separated by a channel connecting Lake Winnipeg to a large marshy lagoon which lies behind the two peninsulas on which the beaches are located. The channel is about 200-300 metres across. At its deepest point it is usually no more than waist deep and any reasonably fit person can easily wade across from Patricia Beach. A word of caution, however: if you see any summer storm clouds on the horizon, this channel can become very treacherous. A summer squall can whip up 1 to 2 metre waves within minutes. It has happened where people have become stranded on the opposite side of the channel from where they wanted to be and had to wait out the storm stark naked, having left their clothes on the other side! Most of the time, however, the channel is very placid." [H.R., 1998]
Important Note: Several people were charged with public nudity in July 1998 after complaints from nearby residents, so watch out for police.
