Betrayed by one disciple, denied by another,
forsaken by all, Jesus meets with his mother. She now understands that the times
predicted by Simeon are here. Her Son is inviting her to partake into the
bitterness of his fate. O Mary, mother of the Seven Sorrows obtain for us: both
this ardent compassion with which you accompanied Jesus, and the patience that
you have taught us at the foot of the Cross.

"And Jesus, seeing his mother there, and the disciple, too, whom he
loved, standing by, said to his mother, Woman, this is thy son. Then he said to
the disciple, This is thy mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into
his own keeping."
