The crowning of thorns and the Preface are inviting us to set our sights "up towards" the Vere dignum... and just, right and profitable for us at all times, and in all places, to give thanks to Thee... Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus ... the Church is exalting holiness from this moral strength ... the source of ...it all.

 

With the preface, the Canon is close, the early bruises of the Incarnation are now expanding into sorrowful torments that are excruciating not only the physical part of the body, but also the mental anguish of being despised.
