Note: If you haven't read the previous two books, you may not want to read this, as I give away some stuff. Not much, but some.
The last (?) book that deals specifically with the Ringworld (there are many more on the subject of the Ringworld Universe), this book is written in the same style as the previous ones.
Louis Wu remains on Ringworld, stranded there by his actions in the previous book, "Ringworld Engineers". After meeting up with him again on the same ship they commandeered from the Kzin map, we get to follow some other people for a while, with Louis coming in focus every now and again. During their struggles, Louis learns of a few problems: Incoming spacecraft are being destroyed, Protectors are doing odd things, and there's a growing problem with the number of vampires around. Louis Wu must again discover just what the heck is going on and try to sort things out, meeting some interesting people along the way.
Despite liking this book, I had a hard time keeping track of everything. Between the overly numerous characters, the twisting plot lines and Larry Niven's novel writing style (with my 2nd year finals not helping anything), I found it hard to remember who was doing what with whom and why.
Thats probably my only problem with this book, although the thing that came to mind repeatedly while reading it was "When the heck is Louis gonna kick the bucket and let some other intrepid adventurer take over?". I've read some other Larry Niven books though, and it appears Louis is a favourite character of his, so he's likely a permenent fixture of this series. I suppose I can live with it. ;-)
Tips for reading: There's a glossary in the back that includes the names and descriptions of all the characters in the book. I suggest keeping a bookmark there for quick reference throughout.
