Floris Walrond

Floris "Ahing" Walrond

"Martin Family Matriarch

Floris Walrond (nee Lee-Young) (4th) recently became the Martin Family Matriarch following the passing of Elaine “Cooksie” Smith on March 3, 2008.

Floris, the eldest of 10 children ( 8 boys and 2 girls) was born on October 10, 1918 in Balmain, Couva, Trinidad. She shares the same birth-date as her father James Lee-Young and her two youngest brothers- twins Selwyn and Claude.

Her mother Alma Lee-Young (nee Martin) (1891-1983) was the second child of 9 siblings born to John Martin Jr.(1867-1952) (2nd) and Florence Calendar (-1929).

On August 8, 1937, Floris married Randolph Walrond, (1899-1996) who for some 20 years was the Head-Teacher at Couva E.C. School. Together they had 9 children (5 boys and 4 girls).

Floris, the mother and home-maker to her nine children, mentor to her 13 grand-children (one deceased) and 3 great-grand-children is an accomplished Seamstress and Classical Pianist.





Derek Smith

Derek M. Smith (5th) is the eldest of 3 children (sister Susan and brother William), of Kenneth and Blanche (nee Lamy) Smith descendants of Matilda (nee Martin) and Edward James Smith (2nd). Derek is the father of Justin and Annalisa Smith from his first marriage to Adriana Panchoo, and Lance Smith from his present marriage to Antoinette Juman. Justin – 22 ( is currently in Mona Jamaica completing his second year – Geology major), Annalisa – 20 (currently in France doing a major in Psychology towards her doctorate), and Lance - 9.

Derek is the Chairman of SESL which in August 1999, celebrated 20 years of service to Trinidad & Tobago as the largest security service company in the City of San Fernando.

The Company's Mission is:

Christine Johnson

Christine Johnson (5TH and cousin to Derek Smith), is the 4th of 6 children of Barbara (nee Smith) and Robert Johnson. Her mother Barbara is the 4th child of Edward Sonny Smith and Leala Nunes, descendants of Matilda (nee Martin) and Edward James Smith (2nd) .

Christine is a Director of The Bagasse Company which celebrated its 20th anniversary of the Normandie Dinner Theatre, in September 1999 by revisiting the classical productions of the original series, which started in 1979 and ran until the Normandie was closed for remodelling in 1982.





Michael Headley

Michael Headley (4TH)

"The leader of the former carnival band...Poison"

Michael Headley, (4th) inherited his love for Carnival from his second cousin Jimmy Smith (3rd) who was one of the first organizers of adult and children Carnival competitions in Port of Spain and in 1946 helped to organize the first Carnival Queen competition.

Michael, more as a dare to himself, brought out his first Carnival Band-POISON- in 1986 and has since become one of the most renowned Band Leaders in Trinidad & Tobago.

Each year a special section in his Band is reserved for family members who come from all over the world, to celebrate this festive occasion among their relatives and friends.





James 'Jimmy' Lee Young

James “Jimmy” Lee Young (5th)

James (Jimmy 5th) Lee-Young and his wife Rachel

Jimmy is the eldest son of Claude and Anita Lee Young and grew up in the oil patch in Point Fortin. Jim was educated at Presentation College and Imperial College, London. He did a Phd in Coastal Engineering at Cambridge where he met his future wife, Rachel.

After he graduated, he spent 8 years with Shell International in Gabon, Holland and the U.K. In 1995, Jim switched jobs and joined British Borneo. He was based in London that year and also got married to Rachel. They have one son, Alexander who was born in 1998.



Rachel and Alex In 1999, Jim joined Venture Production Company – Trinidad and is presently its General Manager. He is fully repatriated and lives in Westmoorings. His passion is for the sea where he scuba dives, wind-surfs and fishes in his spare time.

Wilbur Walrond

Wilbur Alexander Walrond (5th)

Wilbur Walrond was born on July 28, 1938 in Couva, Trinidad, the most southerly island of the archipelago of submerged mountaintops known as the West Indies, which stretches from the southern tip of Florida to the northeast coast of Venezuela, South America.

In 1958, he emigrated to Canada to pursue his studies at the University of British Columbia, and in 1963, graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Civil Engineering.

In 1962 he married Sylvia Richards and together they have two sons Wilbur Alan and Randall Owen.

In 1968 he started his Walrond Consultants Ltd. Structural Engineers and in 1999 he formed Walrond Realty Inc. specializing in Land Assembly.

In 1987 he was a founding member of The Trinidad & Tobago Cultural Society of B.C. of which he has served 7 terms as its President.

In 2000 he was a founding member of the British Columbia Organization of Caribbean Cultural Associations of B.C. serving as its President for four years.

He has resided in the City of Richmond, B.C since 1965 and served as Chairman of that City’s Design panel. He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Richmond for 35 years serving two terms as its President 1979-1981.

Cooksie In 1991 he was a founding member of the World Fellowship of Rotarian Gourmets, which now has three active Chapters in British Columbia.

In 1992, in collaboration with his cousin Michael Headley (4th), the Martin Family Reunion Committee was formed under the Chairmanship of Clayton Headley (4th) and in 2008 the Martin Family Foundation became a reality.

In January 1985 he became a Freemason and in 2001 he was appointed District Deputy Grand Master of District 25 in the Grand Lodge of B.C. & Yukon.

He and Sylvia are the proud grandparents of three girls, Kennedy, Mikayla (centre) and Keisha.





Chantal Esdelle

Chantal Esdelle ... niece & cousins of James Family (June, Roger and Robert generation)

Chantal Esdelle is the founder and director of a Jazz Band in Trinidad & Tobago called Moyene. She is also an accomplish pannist with WITCO Desperadoes. As well has voice training in opera.

• 1994 - 1997 Berklee College of Music, Boston, MA. - B.Mus Jazz Composition, Cum Laude

• 1986 - 1993 Bishop Anstey Girls High School, Port-of-Spain, Trinidad - Cambridge Advanced Certificate

• 1981 - 1993 Pan Pipers Music School, St. Augustine, Trinidad - Royal Schools of Music Grade VIII piano (merit), Grade VIII voice (distinction)

Employment:

• 1999 - present The Ethnic Jazz Club Co. Ltd, Trinidad WI - Managing Director

• June 2009 - produced over 100 editions of the weekly one-hour radio programme "The Chantal Esdelle Caribbean Jazz Hour for 100.5WMJX [Trinidad and Tobago]. The series will continue in 2008.

• Sept 2005 - produced Women In Jazz 2005, the second all female jazz presentation to be staged by the EJC [University of the West Indies St. Augustine campus]

• Sept 2004 - organized youth jazz festival featuring performances by Cuban youth Jazz festival [Jo Jazz] winners. [University of the West Indies St. Augustine campus].

• Sept 2003 - presented performances by Cuban jazz artist Bellita y Jazztumbata and Trinidad and Tobago's Moyenne. [Queens Hall, Port-of-Spain Trinidad].

• April & Sept 2002 - Produced two regional concerts in conjunction with "The Realm". The concerts Caribbean Jazz artists Arturo Tappin of Barbados and Moyenne of Trinidad and Tobago.

• May 2004 - 2006 - produced weekly jazz presentations by various local Caribbean jazz artist at the Kapok Hotel's Bois Cano [Wine & Jazz Thursdays].

• Sept 2000 - produced "Moyenne's" album "New Hope".

• Sept 2003-2006 Bishop Anstey High School East - "Instructed teenage students in elementary and intermediate theory, composition and performance [voice and steel pan], coached upper school students for Caribbean Examinations Council O'level exams. Prepared students for the O'level Music exams, instructed and coached the schools junior steel band ensemble.

• 2000-2002 Ministry of Tourism and Tobago Affairs Port-of-Spain, Trinidad WI - Music Project Coordinator - "Designed the curriculum, furnished classrooms, acquired instruments and sourced tutors for a basic music education programme for nine schools in Tobago. Established an annual teenage workshop ensemble with accompanying classes for the students' development on their individual instruments. Managed the project.

• 1998 - 2000 University of the West Indies St. Augustine, Trinidad WI - Lecturer - "Lectured in the Creative Arts Centre in the musical disciplines of contemporary composition, aurals, steel pan improvisation, piano accompaniment, conducting and steel band ensemble

Awards:

• 1994 Berklee College of Music Best Scholarship

• 1993 Trinidad and Tobago Music Festival; Championship Trophy for piano in the 16 and under 19 piano solo competition, Best Open Soprano in the North, Ffrench Trophy for Most Promising Performer

• 1992 Trinidad and Tobago World Steel Band Music Festival; Joint Champion Pan Soloist [first female and youngest performer to do so].

Music Membership:

• 1998 - present Moyenne - Composer, arranger, pianist and vocalist for this Caribbean Jazz group.
