On San Patricio, Ireland's traditional music ambassadors, The Chieftains, are joined in by a host of celebrated Mexican, American and Irish musicians. San Patricio is one of The Chieftains' most unique projects ever and through a fusion of the musical heritage of Ireland and Mexico, brings to life the story of the San Patricio Battalion. The San Patricio Battalion was made up principally of Irish immigrant conscripts - as well as soldiers from other countries and some runaway slaves - who deserted the United States Army to join the Mexican side in the Mexican-American war of 1846-48.
