1400 in Attendance

By Jeremy Skinner

The Chieftains were in Winnipeg on the 9th. They appeared at the Walker Theater to a crowd of 1400 plus. From the moment they steped on stage they were all smiles. Paddy Moloney opened with his usual chat in Irish, and then welcomed and introduced the band of 33 years.

The Chieftains were joined by two dancers, including Jean Butler, who has appeared on their albums. Each Chieftain was featured with a solo during the evening including Martin Fay playing Carrickfergus.

Derek Bell and Paddy Moloney kept the atmosphere light with their jokes and comments. More then once Paddy had trouble playing his tin whistle because he was laughing and Derek walked off stage with his harp several times until Paddy admitted there was still one great harper left.

The music played ranged from tunes that were on older album like 'Bonaparts Retreat' to a medly of tunes from 'The Long Black Veil'.

They returned for a encore playing two more tunes and had every one standing and dancing. After the encore, they finished, citing they had to get a flight to Sydney in a few hours.

As usual the Chieftains delighted everyone. Their smiles and music will be well remembered.
