The Chieftains 8 signals the end of one phase of The Chieftains and the beginning of a new chapter. Seán Potts and Michael Tubridy leave the group after 14 years and Matt Molloy joins the Chieftains by the next album, the Chieftains 9. Chieftains 8 continues in the same vein as with the older Chieftains recordings showcasing slowed down session tunes and the odd O'Carolan tune. The album covers were released for Chieftains 8 by Claddagh, CBS Columbia and the final one is for the remaster release in 1997.
