     Sears and his wife returned to England to settle some business and were lost at sea. Sears. Jr. had been left in the care of the Barnes family, Dutchess Co., N.Y.

    Stella Mott (Moses Mott) gives Sears wife's name as Elizabeth. Sears and his wife returned to England to settle some business and were lost at sea. Sears Jr. had been left in the care of the Barnes family, Dutchess County, New York.

     Sears Mott (1) was born at Oyster Bay, Long Island, N.Y. about 1739-40. When he enlisted in the N.Y. Provisional Militia (deLancey's Rangers) in April of 1758 he was listed as 18 years of age, fair
complexion, blue eyes, 5'7" in height, born at Oyster Bay, and a currier by trade (i.e. a horse groomer). This info is contained in the militia roles published in 1891 in the "Collections of N.Y. Historical Society" vol. 24 (1891). This "Provisional Militia" regiment (if you can call it that) consisted of nothing but various trades men, in support of the British army - carpenters, tanners, coopers, blacksmiths, etc.
Sears purchased 26 acres of land at Hempstead Harbor, Long Island in 1764. His will was dated June 13, 1765 and proved in New York city on June 21, 1766. Administration was granted to the executors on Oct. 27, 1766. At his marriage in 1763 his occupation was "skinner". Therefore I conclude
that his occupation as currier in 1758 is consistent with that of skinner in 1763. (David Brearley, Ottawa, Ontario).
