Haight (Hoyt/Hight) Family

Simon Hoyt is my ancestor who came from West Hatch, Somerset, England. The earliest mention of Simon Hoyt in North America is about 1628 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. (Source: Jim Haight). New research states that Simon came to Windsor, Ct, in 1629, aboard the ship Lyon's Whelp.

Simon is also said to have had a first wife, Deborah Stowers, daughter of Walter Stowers. This has been proven to be in error and the first wife of Simon Hoyt is now proven to be "Jane Stoodlie". [Hoyt's Issue, Spring 1997, :1358]. [see GMB, II:1032 for explanation pertaining to second wife's maiden name, which is not "Smith".] Her maiden name remains undiscovered. The reference in early records to "the Smith" was reference to the village "Blacksmith" not to the maiden name of 2nd wife ,Susanna (h).

My Haight line is a long line of Quakers. Harvey, my 3x Gr. Grandfather was a Quaker Preacher. He lived on Clergy reserved land in Norwichville, Upper Canada . His Father James Haight was one of the original pioneers of this Quaker dominated village. James is shown on an 1820 map of Norwichville. James wife was Anna Isabella Smith (unconfirmed last name as LDS has it as Allen. However, my mom brought back information from the Norwich Archives stating it was Allen from a research project on the Haight family done by a William Tuttle of Brantford, Ontario. The Allen name is from a first marriage of Anna to a Mr. Allen in NY State.) Anna brought a child by the name of Elizabeth into her marriage with James Haight.

Poldon-Haight

Miss Ethel Poldon and her father, Mr. G. W. Poldon were the guests of her grandfather, Mr. Harvey Haight on Thursday last, being his birthday and also Ethel's birthday. Mr. Haight was 91 years of age, and born on the farm which he know lives. His father, James Haight was U.E. Loyalists Stock, moved from New York to Canada in 1820, accompanied by his wife and six children, and settled in North Norwich on half lot #2, Con 2. It was clergy reserved land.

Mr. (Harvey) Haight has lived on the same farm all his life, he lived in the village of Norwich a few years, but returned to his farm after the death of his wife. His son Newton Haight and Mrs. Haight have resides on the old homestead farm for more than 30 years, and his home is with them.

Mr. Haight is a minister of the Friends Society, and for more than 50 years was actively engaged in the work. He traveled and held meetings in many parts of Ontario, in the eastern states and western states.

For several years he has been entirely blind, but when the weather is favorable his son brings him to the meeting house, Stover Street North, and he preaches most excellent sermons, his interesting and instructional: it is marvelous the correct manner in which he quotes the scripture, he memory is so perfect.

He no doubt has many lonely hours but his son and family are very devoted to him, and make every effort for his comfort and happiness.

He is still strong and has good health and it may well be said of him: "He wears the mark of many years well spent, of virtue, truth well pride and wide experience". (As reported in the Norwich Gazetteer - November 06, 1913, page 8, Column 5).
