James Hunt Bates

     BATES– James Hunt Bates  1796-1873 of Wentworth Co, Upper Canada, came from NJ, USA.  He married Susannah Smith, daughter of Jacob Smith, also of New Jersey and Rebecca French.

       James is listed on the  1871 Canadian Census as being from the USA.  It does not say he was born there and can find no evidence thus far of him being born there, Only that he came to Canada from NJ, USA

     Susannah’s line is of German Descent.  Her father Jacob was a United Empire Loyalist, therefore receiving land grants from the Canadian Government in Wentworth Co, Upper Canada. Susannah’s Grandparents were Jacob Smith and Elizabeth Lewis.  Jacob’s father Matthias Schmidt (later anglicized to Smith) was the German immigrant who first came to North America for this family line.
