Wunsch-Wonch

     Firstly I would like to thank the many people I have been in touch with regarding the Wonch family.  Donald Tubbs, Author of “Wonch Family History”, as well as Bob and Marjorie Wonch Kennedy whom I had telephone conversations.  Michael Dingman whom I so grateful for the many source documents he supplied me with as well as a wonderful friendship we have gained.  Elizabeth Peterson,  Beverley Kessler, Hugh Cowan, Lisa Brake and many others that I have had to opportunity of meeting by email.

      My Wonch line is from my Gr Grandmother on my Dad’s side, Lydia Wonch, married to Edward(Edwin) Brazier in Brantford, Brant Co, Ontario.

       Markham is the place that was originally settled by the Berczy Settlers of Germany in 1794.  John George Wunsch (original spelling) and his wife Mary were part of the original pioneers of the area. There are about 22 families left today out of the original 64.  John George Wuncsh, his wife Mary, and children were on the Census of 1803 taken by Berczy.

     William Berczy travelled on the first ship to leave Germany the Catherina and it eventually reached Philadelphia after a13 week voyage and Berczy lead the group up country to the Genesee tract the other group on the Henrich Georg landed in New York including the Wonch Family travelled up the Hudson River  and overland to the Genesee tract, they met William Berczy and others in the party the following Spring. This info is from the booklet Markham Berczy Settlers and the Odessey of the Berczy Settlers (Hugh Cowan email April 2011)

      They arrived Oct 10, 1792,  They then followed a William Berczy to Genesse Tract (Upper New York) and on a virgin settlement in Markham, York Co, Ontario in June of 1794.  They took up a land grant in Lot 21, Conc 4 in Markham Twp, York, Co.  John George was a farmer and son John Richard, grandson William Henry were farmers and continued to farm the original grant for 99 years.      The William Henry  Wonch(son of John Richard)  house has been considered for restoration as applied to the Markham council in 2001.  I have corresponded with the Curator stating that the barn has been disassembled and is to be relocated.  The Markham Museum/Library does hold Wonch family info as well as a few pictures, which I am in the process of getting for my family collection.

The house is situated on the original property of John George Wonch, lot 21 con 4 of Markham Twp. The house has a new address located at "45 Castleview Crescent Markham". If you Google this address and go to Street view you will find this house amongst all the new houses development its near the intersection of Major MacKenzie & Woodbine ave (update from Hugh Cownan April 2011).
 

       Medical: I feel it important to put this on the family page.  The more info I read, the more I have been noticing that Diabetics is very common in the Wunsch/Wonch Family.  My side is very fortunate, however, my Great Gramma Lydia Wonch had it, my Uncle has the disease, but not my father, nor us

      My Wonch line is from Brantford, Ontario, but originating from Markham, York Co, Ontario. There are today, Wonch's in Brantford, Brant Co, Ontario.
