and out. We visit nursing homes, long-term care facilities, group homes
and assisted living residences.
Horse &
Dog Programs We
offer a variety of programs, please visit Horse
Programs & Dog Programs.
Equine
Volunteer Program Volunteering in our
horse programs does not require any horse experience, join our program
and we will train you in General Horse Care & Handling. Completion of
our program will prepare you for Equine Canada Rider Levels!
Literacy & Education Program
This program promotes reading and literacy skills with the help of dogs
and horses. We visit schools, library programs and literacy groups. Our
CHAAPS library also offers books, novels, videos/DVD's about horses and
dogs. Click Here for more information
on this program.
OUR ANIMALS
CHAAPS has several horses and dogs in the program. All of our
animals are clean, healthy and well trained. They are Temperament Tested
to ensure safety and have their own Handler at all times.
CHAAPS TEMPERAMENT TESTING
CHAAPS has developed a Temperament Testing
process to ensure the animals
are safe and suited for the activities, whether it’s a horse for riding
or a dog that gets ‘bear hugs’ from excited children. Each animal
undergoes approximately 10 different situations that ‘test their
temperament’ and their reactions are evaluated. The animals are graded
for personality traits, temperament and suitability to different areas
of the program.
OUR VOLUNTEERS & STAFF
CHAAPS has a group of
dedicated and trained volunteers & staff who have equine and/or canine
experience. They are required to obtain a criminal record check and
complete a letter of confidentiality. Our instructors have extensive
knowledge and a range of experience with horses (and dogs). They are CanTRA
certified and
trained, receiving the most up-to-date Therapeutic Riding Instructing
training through the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association (CanTRA).
SAFETY & LOCATION
CHAAPS follows the highest level of safety protocol, emergency and
accident procedures. All canine and equine activities are fully insured.
The
CHAAPS farm provides a private, safe and secure learning
environment.
The
program is also mobile with both the horse and dog programs.
