The North Central Community
Resource Centre (CRC) is a place where people can find help and learn about
what’s available to them in their community. The Centre can help with a
wide range of social issues, including counseling, needs around housing
or food, parenting, or other concerns. We also work with a wide variety
of other services, so if we don’t have the answer, we know someone who
does.
To see the most recent news on programs and services in the area, please click here. We are located in the Huntington Hills Community Centre, 520 78th Avenue N.W., Calgary Alberta. Check back often, as we will be using this front page to provide updates and information about new programs, courses, and services being offered in the community. For more information about us, and what services and programs you can find on-site, go to the Programs page. The Resources page contains links to a number of websites you might find useful. And if you are interested in volunteering, please check out that page for opportunities with us. Upcoming
Events and Programs:
Are you a single parent in the North Central area of Calgary? Are there times when you feel overwhelmed and isolated? Would you welcome some support and experienced guidance? Single parents are wanted for a pilot program that will match them with mentors who have been there and done that. Please contact Paula at 275-6666 ext 41 if you are interested in being a mentor or a single parent.
We have resumed our evening hours, with one switch - we've moved them from Wednesday to Thursday nights. Every Thursday night the Centre, along with the computer room, will be open until 8 p.m.
The Resource Centre along with Aspen Family and Community Network Society are pleased to present the Home Alone Safely Program on October 18. The program, while not encouraging leaving your children home alone, helps them to develop skills and confidence to be home alone for short periods of time. Topics covered include responsible decision making, ground rules, and resisting peer pressure. The program is for children aged 10, 11, and 12, and costs $10. To register, contact Hazel. Affordable Housing Dinner If housing were the only cost, it might not be so bad...But then there's the utility bills, medical costs, clothing, school fees, food... Join us on September 24th for a simple dinner and a sharing of resources around dealing with the expenses that make it a challenge to live in Calgary today. Many families find they have too much month left at the end of the money - come help us create a list of possible solutions to be brought forward to a panel of politicians and decision makers around the need for creating more affordable housing. Come out and share with us your ideas on
both the problems and solutions of creating more affordable housing options
in the community, and also learn about resources available to help you
out.
Parenting Course We are pleased to announce that we will again be hosting the Salvation Army's "Families Learning Together" series of workshops for both parents and school-aged children. The program focuses on developling positive parenting skills while also discussing topics and concerns selected by the participants, so that the information is about what is going on in your life. This is an eight week course beginning October 7, 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Children will be involved in a separate group that occurs at the same time as the parents group. This program is free of charge. For more information or to register, contact Kelly at 275-6666 (21). Second Location Due to the large area we cover, this fall we are opening a second office along with Aspen. Located in the Northminster United Church (3311 Centre Street N), Shirley from Aspen will be available on Monday afternoons from 1-3 and Kelly on Wednesdays from 1-3 starting Wednesday, Sept 3. The phone number is 277-0322. North Central Community Coordinating Council The North Central Community Coordinating Council (CCC) acts as an advisory group to ensure that local services are delivered in the best possible for way for the people of this area. New volunteer members are being sought at this time to help us support children and families, plan activities and events, and make sure that the voice of this community is heard when decisions and plans are made! The Council has completed a community assessment which has lead to the creation of working groups around five priority areas: Affordable Housing, Youth Services, Immigrant Services, Space for Programs, and Transportation/Service Accessibility. If you would like to be a part of this group, and work towards solutions on these or other issues, please contact either Paul at 275-6666/32 or Dennis 221-3605. Our next meeting is August 25 at 7:30pm at the Huntington Hills Community Centre, and visitors are welcome to come and see what the group is about.
