Bob you are dating yourself. If you and I can remember S11.
That was the first kitchen I ate out of in Sep 1959 on joining the Apprentices as a boy soldier. Then we moved to S 7 right next to the barbershop then finally to the Yellow Canary as it was first called, NOT the Pink Elephant as it is now reverantly called. Who out there besides Bob and myself remember those days. Would like to hear from you on the site about your days. Where did all you cooks take your training, Pink Elephant or elsewheres
ie Fd Svc Trg Coy or an old "H" Hut where I did both my
PL 3s and PL 5s out of. I was even a clerk for Fd Svcs Coy before I became a cook out of the same building circa 1968.

Bill Arsenault was one of the GOOD GUYS I often wondered were he got to. I worked for him when he was I/C Shift in S11 in the RCASC(S)in 1958.

Dick (Moose) is in Kingston. Tony Potvin could fill you in more.

As received from Ross Campbell;

EMERY ARSENAULT Peacefully on June 28, 2005, Emery passed away. Emery was predeceased by his wife Irene on June 9, 2005. Emery is survived by Elaine (Wally), Donald (Dolly), Robert, Merna (Ron), Valerie (Leonard), Janice, Randy (Michelle), Lorna (Dan) and Lorraine (Robert); grandchildren, Shannon, Lisa, Carla, Yvonne, Michael, Stephanie, Rachael, Kayla, Josh and Darnell; five great-grandchildren and mother-in-law Beatrice Lawrence. Emery was born in Moncton, NB on July 21, 1924. Emery and Irene were married for 25 years and resided in Winnipeg. Together they enjoyed many years of dancing to fiddle music, travelling and many endless drives to Birds Hill Park watching the deer. Emery served in the military for 23 years, followed by many years of employment at Stony Mountain Penitentiary. Emery loved fishing, telling jokes, watching sports and bird watching. A memorial service will take place on Thursday, July 7 at 12;30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Flowers are gratefully declined and a donation may be made in Emery’s memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6. Fondly remembered and never forgotten. Arrangements entrusted to; CHAPEL LAWN FUNERAL HOME CREMATION AND RECEPTION CENTRE 885-9715 Family and friends are invited to sign the Book of Condolence at www.chapellawn.mb.ca

I would like to add a bit more to this obit. Emery (Bill) Arsenault served in the RCA in WW 2 and on rejoining the Cdn. Army enlisted in the RCASC as a cook. He was posted to CFB Wpg./Air Base on retirement in the rank of Sgt. I believe he was NCO/IC kitchen of the Officers mess at the Air Base. I was posted to the Air Base in 78 and heard of Bill and met him through his Step-daughter. When I pensioned off from the C.A.F.’s myself I was employed at Stony Mt. Pen. in the kitchen where I worked with Bill. Bill had the corniest jokes stashed away in his mind and loved to share them. As you will have noticed Bill’s wife Irene passed away only a very short time before him. They were a very loving couple and lived their life as one. I know that Bill and Irene will be happily re- united now.

195. Joe Schroeder - 2005-06-28 00:59:01
Bill I think what you are trying to do is good for us. I sent Mr. Stoffer a e-mail and we just got of the phone, like he said the goverment isn’t for this how ever he still plans to introduct it as a pri members bill. Like you said what have we to lose it took a long time to get our dental plan but finally we won. So guys sent this MP a e-mail and in the fall let your MP’s know what you think.

194. Bill Hendrickson - 2005-06-26 15:06:53
Update on Superannuation claw back.

I receved an e-mail from a fellow cook and he asked a question too which I did not have an answer, so I will forward his question to our fellow cooks who are members of FSNA; what roll is the FSNA taking part in the trial reference of Bill C73 on the 15th of November?

The monies that the government has taken from our pension plan would defiantly cover the cost of taking away the claw back.

I have received all lot of e-mail supporting the quest for the Government to take the appropriate action and cancel the claw back of our superannuation. Also there was e-mail from others that stated; Hell will freeze over before the Government grants such a request.

The ball is in our court and what you decide too do is your choice. There is nothing too lose if we pursue this course of action only gain if we win, this is my opinion.

187. Dan Potvin (son of Tony) - 2005-06-21 20:54:37
Hi Dad et al

I passed on your message from Mr Hendrickson to all of my mates and the School Chief here in Kingston. In particular, a member who emailed Mr Stoffer received a phone call from him on Friday past. He stated that he was going to bring this motion (or whatever it’s called)to parliament in the fall. He mentioned that once we hear about it, it would be of benefit to contact our own member of parliament and indicate our support. Cheers all

Dan Potvin

186. elroy (fletch) fletcher - 2005-06-21 03:19:11
while i am in here does anyone know the whereabouts of a jack jarvis and or jack klassen in this great large world we live in ???? tkys

185. elroy (fletch) fletcher - 2005-06-21 03:01:03
well bill i passed this on to a lot of buddies and i think we should pursue this matter and see what they do for us keep the good work bill

184. Bill Hendrickson - 2005-06-21 01:18:54
Well Guys it seems that I was misinformed. I received an answer from FSNA and they stated that the never had the claw back of our superannuation on their agenda and don’t plan to in the future.
<br>
So I am wondering now if we should pursue this matter or let it slide by the wayside.
<br>
I need to do more research tand gather more information on this matter before I do any more, as I don’t want to get peoples hopes up if it is a loosing battle.
<br>
Bill

183. Terry Burn - 2005-06-20 19:35:30
Bill....Your dreaming if you think you can convince the feds to change the pension system. FSNA will not take up the cause because they have researched the subject and realized it is futile. This is not like lobbying provincial governments to approve licence plates. You may succeed in having them look at our indexing.Leave sleeping dogs alone.

182. Bill Hendrickson - 2005-06-20 18:44:22

I sent this to the FSNA this morning, along with supporting documentations.
I can only Hope that it will light a fire under their butts, as they have been working on this since the mid 80s.
It is my opinion that they are not relay doing their jobs.
Where is the monies going that they collect from dues; 130000 members at $2.50 a month equals $3,900,000 a year. Is it eaten up in wages instead of doing what it was initially set out to do?

Good day gentlemen of the FSNA
It seems that you have not been able too make any headway on the reduction of our superannuation on reaching 65.
Well it seems that the retired and serving military are coming to your aid.
This letter as well as other documentation has been sent to every unit in the CAF as well as all retired service associations.
Hope this will help you in your quest, as we will not give up until we achieve what we deserve.
Yours faithfully,
Bill Hendrickson CD MWO (ret)

181. Tony Potvin - 2005-06-20 03:06:05
Good work Bill, I just sent your message to my son at CFB Kingston to be passed along to his co-workers and as many military pers. as possible.

180. Bill hendrickson - 2005-06-19 18:41:31

Well Gentlemen we now have Veterans plates and it seems that we now have another quest, one that is close to the heart. Politicians get big pensions and they do not get claw backs so why should us servicemen and women get a claw back when we reach 65. We only receive a small pension to start of with, not Hundreds of thousands of dollars.
So lets get going and show the same determination we did for the Veterans plates.
Bill

------------------------------------------------------------

I received this in my e-mail the other day I replied to mr Stoffer and received a reply by phone the next day. This may interest some of you and if it does a e-mail to Mr. Stoffer might be in order don’t forget to add your phone number and name. Peter Stoffer,M.P. Sackville-Eastern Shore 51 Cobequid Road Lower Sackville,N.S. B4C 2N1 February 21,2005 Dear Sir; Subject; Canadian Forces Superannuation Benefits-Reduction at Age 65 This letter is written specifically to seek your support with regards to terminating the reduction formula that is applied to retired Canadian Forces members receiving a Superannuation at age 65. On Jan 1, 1966 The Canadian Pension Plan was introduced. Unfortunately Members of the Canadian Forces were not given any choices of participation with regards to the reduction format applied at age 65. The large surplus the Canada Pension Plan has accumulated certainly indicates that premiums, with proper investment are sufficient to maintain the plan pay out policy. Compared to other Government Agencies, Military personnel are not compensated for extra hours of employment to satisfy daily Military requirements. Military Operational requirements often leads to extended family separation and crushes the member=s opportunity of additional employment that creates extra funds for their family. Upon retirement our members are faced with uncontrollable amount of increases. Annual cost, such as increase of taxes on our homes, heating oil, electricity, gasoline and food continues to increase faster than our indexing revenues. At age 65 retired members of the Canadian Forces deserve an exemption to the claw back procedures that are being applied to our Superannuation. When we arrive in our Golden Years, we should be given the financial dignity of enjoying our remaining years of family life to the fullest. I submit this request for your continual and full support of Veterans. While celebrating the year of the Veterans, it would be a unique and most appropriate time for the Government of Canada to acknowledge the special and most valuable services Veterans continue to provide to our great Country by terminating this unfair claw back to our pensions. Give us the opportunity to live our remaining Golden Years with financial dignity. Respectfully yours, John H. Labelle 864-2456 florencejohn@ns.sympatico.ca Past and present members of the Canadian forces April 29,2005 Dear friends; Subject; Claw back to the Canadian Forces Superannuation annuity at age 65 1. Initiatives are being attempted to terminate the claw back procedures that are being applied to our CFS pension at age 65. This situation applies to all Canadian Forces personnel who are receiving a Military Annuity. This position will also apply to all serving members when they retire and receive an annuity. 2. Please read all enclosures carefully. As per the enclosed attachment we have received the support of Mr. Peter Stoffer, M.P. NDP Member of Parliament. Now the Torch is passed on to us. You can assist by responding to the following information ASAP. A. Preferably send an e-mail with your telephone number to Mr. Peter Stoffer, M.P. by adding your name to the list stating that you fully support all initiatives that are being attempted in order to terminate the claw back procedures that are being applied to our CFS pension at age 65. E-mail; stoffp1@parl.gc.ca B. We further request that you forward this e-mail with all attachments to all your Military friends. Together we must distribute this initiative to all retired and serving Military personnel across Canada. It is important that we demonstrate solidarity. 3. The Leadership and Support of Senior Officers is requested. We are attempting to get other organizations to support us. Remember that we can only succeed if all members support this initiative. Numbers on the nominal list is what counts. 4. My pension reduction at age 65 was 480.56 per month. What will your deduction be at age 65??? Thank you friends God Speed John H. Labelle CPO1 (ret) E-mail; Florencejohn@ns.sympatico.ca I must apologize I can’t get the letter from Mr Stoffer to copy it is written in pdf format and I can’t copy it . If you wish I will e-mail the contents to anyone who request it. In brief it states that he will be bring this matter to the attention of parliament in the fall a e-mail to mr stoffer at stoffp1@parl.gc.ca should get you the information you require. I hope this information will be of some interest to the group Thanks Bryan

Hi Kim; It was good hearing from you. How is life treating in Cold Lake.

170. Michael Greer - 2005-06-10 09:17:42
For those having the luxury of living out West on Vancouver Island, where one can comfortably golf all year around, here's the scoop on a great place to do so. Metchosin Golf & Country Club. <a href=’http://www.members.shaw.ca/bmgolf/index.htm’ target www.members.shaw.ca/bmgolf/index.htm</a> The kitchen is managed by not only a retired service chef, but also one of my best friends, George "Rolly" Rowland. We serving together with the 2nd Battalion PPLCI in Winnipeg during the early 80's.

Here's the deal. Monday to Friday, from 2PM on, do the 9 & dine for $21.50. Yep, that's 9 holes of golf and Steak dinner with all the trimmings for one amazing price. And if you're not inclined to golf, 2 can dine for $19.95 for that same steak dinner. And hey, if your not into steak, Rolly's always got other specials on for $8.95. You can't go wrong!

Anyone living on the island, or out this way for a visit, this is a great opportunity to get together over a little golf, some fine beer, and some extraordinary food, on a cooks budget Anyone in the area looking to hook up, give me a shout. Might be a good plan for a mini reunion of island retirees....

Cheers, Mike

For those of you not aware (as it doesn't tell you); on the photo page there is a link to other cooks who have set up photo sites and added their photos there. On the main page, right side, the link "profile" takes you to a page where Squirrel, John McDonald, and Rob McRobb have set up photos. Anyone else wishing to do the same, when you create your own site, simply add CFCooks to your friends and I can link your page as well. For everyone else, keep sending me your photos and I’ll post them on the main site for you. Thanks!

Cheers, Mike

PS; Please ignore any promotions on the site which asks; "Sponsor CFCooks with a gift Flickr Pro Account" My intentions are to keep the site absolutely FREE! These advertisements are posted by Flickr and not myself. Unfortunately I have no control over them.

157. Squirrel Switzer - 2005-06-01 16:04:03
Its story time. I can recollect a story of mine of when I was promoted to Sgt while I was serving with 1 RCHA. You all know how cooks stay together and usually as a MCpl you would call Sgt cooks via there first name and not rank. I was being repatriated back to Canada in 1982 and I was asked to take the Kitchen Truck halfway from Lahr to Saltau and feed the troops going up on a three week exercise and of course I said yes, even tho I was going to be very busy packing to come back to Canada. When the troops came through for there meal a Sgt cook with the name of Rick Wright came through the line and I said Hi Rick, how was the trip up? A WO Herbie overheard the conversation and told us both to meet him behind the kitchen truck. He proceeded to tear a strip off both of us for not using rank. Well as it goes I was promoted 1 week later and the chief cook asked me if I would take the truck back up to feed the troops coming back from Soltau after there three weeks. Well you guessed it, same spot same cook Sgt and same WO Herbie. I said of course Hi Rick how was the trip down today? The Wo tried to take us behind the truck but I reached into my pocket and pulled out 3 stripes and said no no, I can call him Rick now. The WO was not a vey happy camper when he left my Kitchen truck that day. One of many stories with the Herbies. Nice to be a HERBIE Helper.

High Guys

Just though of a story that hapened to me while in Germany in the 60’s Cooking for John Foley @ 3RCHA
during one lunch meal hour at Fort Prince of Whales.
every one was in a Panic because we were running out of Food so MWO Foley and Sgt Smith were cooking hamburgers on top of the old Coal stove both all flustered and in I walk from the dining hall all smiles singing happy go Lucky me. and Old John yells to Sgt. Smith "Charge that Man charge that Man"
Charges were droped after everything quited down.
Just one of many old story’s that bring back fond memories

Well that is more like it. I come and look at least twice a day to see whos who on the site and I recognise quite a few people I have run into in my career. Ken Collet being one of them. 1973 was the year in Rockcliffe before I even became a cook. Just good to finally see some chatter on the site because that is why Mike so dillegentlly created it to get us to get back together one way or the other. So lets keep it up.

Hello everyone, It’s been brought to me attention that access to the web site from DND computers has been blocked by a firewall since 19 Mar 05 due to the size of the sight. Apparently though, the link to the guest book and Chefs forum is still accessible. Thus the reason I’m posting this message here. Someone within the service needs to contact the DND admin web master have get the firewall raised/lifted or whatever they do with it, so you can all have access to the entire updated sight, especially for those serving in operations who do not have any access to civilian computer internet. I’ll try and post relevant information in the Chef’s forum for those that only have DND access. Also, here is the link to the new photo page, which is also unavailable to you. www.flickr.com/photos/cfcooks/ It should be picked up be google soon as well. Sorry for the inconvenience gang! Cheers, Mike

Hello everyone,Now living in Sault Ste Marie Ontario.
I attended the Cook’s Reunion In Gagetown and had a excellant time. Will be attending the next one next year.
Hey ,Squirrel the Old Salad Queen from Nelles Block you still driving the squirrel bike. On May 19 in Sudbury Ontario I will be receiving two life saving awards. The OPP Commissioners Citation and The St John’s Meritorious.
This was for saving a 9 day old baby’s life in Iron Bridge Ontario back in November 04.
All this was the result of our training while in the service. The First Aid training we took came in handy.
Ok I’ll watch for the post on here to see if any of my old friends show up.

112. Squirrel Switzer - 2005-04-23 00:15:06
Hello Doug.
I am still confused as to who you are. Doug is a good first name now can I have the last name so as I might be able to put a face on you. You say you worked with me in Salads on your 4s book, but I trained at least a 100 people so my memory is a bit foggy on that part. You also say I taught you golf at the tri-athalon in Chilliwack so that has to be at least 10 or more years ago. If you are capable of sending me a recent picture of your self to my EMail address it would even be better. Thanks

111. Jerry Whelan - 2005-04-22 17:34:46
Hey Bill,
that’s why we can’t get all the names for the CFSAL Broomball team as most of the missing guys are not food service as well.

110. Bill Hendrickson - 2005-04-22 16:43:37
Well I guess I confused you enough on the Calgary photo. The major is not related too food services. I believe he was the logistics major from Svc Bn. I have a few more pictures too send in so when I find them I will forward them too Mike.

109. Doug - 2005-04-22 16:09:26
OK Squirrel, you taught me how play golf in Chillawak at a cooks outing. Plus you helped me on my 4’s book in the salad room. Got to the Island in 91, worked with Terry Barney alot on the sandwich bar.Left there in 96 to come to Edmonton. Just joined the RCASC Association. Doug

108. Squirrel Switzer - 2005-04-22 02:28:21
Well it has been a few days since I made a comment on this site. Even tho I do check in every day to find out how things are going. We are up to 143 now and it was just about a month & a half that I joined up and I was about number 25 to 40 somewheres. That is good news for Mike. His ideas have really taken hold. I also notice that more people are talking now than before. Thats good because that was why the site was made. Still have not heard from anyone back east who might know PETE SCHRUSTRA from 1 RCHA circe 1980 - 1982. Last blurb was from FT but who is FT? My mind is in senility mode so I cannot remember who you are. Please advise this old Foggie. Thanks Squirrel

107. FT - 2005-04-21 22:19:23

Sorry Bill, Les Pollock does not work anywhere.

87. Jack Stanley - 2005-04-12 02:12:14
Hi Bill and Jerry. First, Doug Sprague is in the Masonic Lodge with me, I will say hi for you. He has no computer. Joe Smith has had three major heart attacks but will not give in. He has sold his farm and he and his wife Dorothy bought land on TOP of a mountain. They have built their own HUGE house, with 12 inch concrete walls. They have their own saw mill, (that’s right)and make their own lumber for the house. It is near completion. They have their own well, which Joe dug, and make thier own electricity. The same old Joe, very energetic. I do not see him often enough. Chuck St.P., maybe was in Moose Jaw, but was in Wainright Supply Depot, as I drew my rations from him. But he now lives back in Saskatchewan some place. I do not have at this time Rick Pophams e-mail address, but will get it. Joe Smith can be reached at 1-604-796-0636. Doug Sprauge at 1-604-858-8789

86. Bill Hendrickson - 2005-04-11 18:26:07
Jack,
Is Joe Smith now living in CHWK? Is Les Pollock working with you? I can remember the three of us at the mens’ mess in Chilliwack in the early sixties.

85. Jerry Whelan - 2005-04-10 13:57:12
Doug Sprague and Rick Popham are a couple of names from the past, for sure. Is Charlie St-Pierre that you mentioned the same Chuck St-Pierre that use to be stationed in Moose Jaw? in the early sisites? Can you get these guys to register? Thanks for the "Where Are They Now" info.

84. Jack Stanley - 2005-04-10 08:12:39
Just remembered another, Karen Larson. It was rather strange last year for me, when I walked into work at CCC (Corrections Chilliwack) and saw Al, (sorry forgot his last name), and Richard Popham. The three of us shared a laugh, as we where once again together. We had all been on the same Hospital Cook Course in Bordon together, and reunited here in Chilliwack. The course was in 1970 some time and here this was in 2004. Small world guys and gals. Oh yeh! Les Pollock is here as well.

83. Jack Stanley - 2005-04-10 08:05:24
Hello all, well I have read most everything that there is in this, and I must say that I have to always go back as there is so much. Thanks for starting this "program", and all the entries. I live in Chilliwack and will not bore you with my stuff, but give some names of people that I see around here. Rene’ Rochon, Gerald McGladrey, Richard Popham, Ed Wallace, Chalie St.Pierre just moved to Saskatchewan, Jock Connely, Myles Hiscock, Doug Sprague, and Joe Smith. There are about three or four more but I have forgotton their names, remember their faces. I will eneter them when I remember them.

Hi All Cooks
I am looking for an old Chief Cook friend of mine named PETE SCHRUSTRA.
I was posted with him 1980 - 1982 1 RCHA Germany.
I think he has long since retired like myself so I was wondering if anyone on the East Coast has heard of him or can give me a telephone number or snail mail address where I may contact him. EMAIL Address would be better if he is on line. Would like to talk to him if I find out where he is living.
Any help on this matter would be appreciated.
I tried the old method of looking him up on the web but I always get lost there. Computer illerate is me.

79. Lloyd w.anderson(andy) - 2005-04-07 04:25:18

Nice to have a site like this to get the memory working.

78. Jerry Whelan - 2005-04-05 23:11:37
Mrs. Turriff, Amanda and Kelvin. I was so schocked to hear of your Husband/dad’s passing. I knew him while he was with 412 Sqn. and I was at Uplands. I’m sure that all of his friends over the years join with me in remembering with you, a life so important to so many. Love and sympathy.

77. Jerry Whelan - 2005-04-05 14:52:21
Mike, I used the chefs forum for a couple of message this morning but unsure if they were received. Not even sure if I have a full understanding on that site. Can you confirm that for me. Thanks

76. Michael Greer - 2005-04-05 07:18:08
Jerry, that’s a great idea. The only problem is that the guest book can only be set up in this format. So I’ve created a new heading in the Chefs Forum for your suggestion. Although we’re not getting much participation in there. Maybe we need to change the name from Chefs Forum to something more inviting. Any suggestions?

Squirrel, I think you’ll find that most of those you speak of have signed on. And the very few that have not, have left their email address. You’ll notice the small envelope icon in the the upper right corner of each guest book entry. This is the guest’s email address. Please remember, not everyone is comfortable with having their personal information on a web page. Thanks, Mike

75. Jerry Whelan - 2005-04-04 16:03:32
I just finished printing of some history of Puntzi Mtn. to mail to a steward buddy of mine who was stationed there with me in 63. Frank Pennell was his name and he don’t have a computer but I am sure he would be proud of this site and as well it was great to know about the steward site as both trades went hand in hand. I want to run the name Ted McCarney by our readers. He was a salesman at our kitchens who did the Ottawa, Kingston, Petawawa, Trenton etc. area for years and got to be friends with a lot of the cooks in Ont. area. He once attended one of our Food Services golf Tournaments in Trenton. Of course Ted has since passed away and I attended his funeral in Oakville. Perhaps we can start up in our guest book a "What ever happened to" or "Where are they now" section to help find our missing buddies through our many readers? Thanks.

73. Squirrel Switzer - 2005-04-02 16:55:42
Hi all you cooks and of course retired cooks.
Did anyone get APRIL FOOLED Yesterday?
I just checked the site as I do everyday and have found that there are a few people who have said they like the site and enjoy how they can meet old friends.
My question to them is how come you have not logged in as a member yet?
Maybe we as members know you, but if you are not on as a member we do not know how to contact YOU.
Follow-up on another guestbook signing by myself, if these new people read all of the guestbook they will no doubt email or by word of mouth tell other cooks about the site that they know, and they will come on board as well.
We can then make this site the way it was designed by Mike Greer to do, and that was to get old friends talking to one another after having lost contact with them do to postings or retirement.

72. Rene LeBrasseur PO2 (ret'd) - 2005-04-02 16:26:06
Wow, leave it to Gerry Whelan to come up with good information regarding this site. This is a super way to get in touch with old friends and I’m looking forward to it. I’ve already received one contact and contacted Roger Nelson today.

71. Ron Dwyer - 2005-04-01 22:47:51
Wow, what a great idea. I was just talking with Rene the sailor, and he told me about this sight. I’m realy excited. Keep up the good work.

70. Dannyboy - 2005-03-31 01:11:12
Hey everyone, I just got on today and sure glad that there is something in place now. We can reach each other espacially when retired. I have seen names from a long time ago (Kenny Collet). 69. Squirrel Switzer - 2005-03-30 16:03:11
Bill here is a story from when we first met
I worked in your kitchen at PPCLI in Esquimalt when I got out of the service and became a FOS 2 in 1988.
You asked me if I would go into the bake shop one day after the unit did a "BUGOUT".
I said that I had not been in a bakeshop in years and you said, "Do not worry most of the stuff was already to go, just put a few things together and bake & serve."
I ran a few things through then I found some butter tart mix and pie dough. I made about 6 doz of them and baked them and managed to make them golden BLACK. I was in the process of throwing them out when you came into the bakeshop and passed me about 7 doz "FROZEN" tart shells.
I said "Where in the %@*&% do you get those."
You said "They were on RATIONS" now.
In my day you made everything from SCRATCH.
Well you asked for a story and there is mine.

68. Bill Hendrickson - 2005-03-30 03:31:29

The site has been only open now over a month and there is now over 117 members registered. Mike I don’t know where you got the idea of starting a cooks’ web site but I am sure glad you did, BZ. I recognize a lot of names of retired cooks and some that are still in. When you have served 28 years in the service and did over 13 postings plus cooks courses, well that is a lot of cooks’ names to remember. I recognize some names but I can’t remember when or were I served with them, must be mini Alzheimer setting in, LOL. So my fellow gut robbers contact me if you served with me and we can swap old cooks’ war stories.

Jerry Whelan just informed me that Ken Collet has made an appearance on the site. Welcome to the land of the living. I am always stopping in at Jerry's in Havlock and I believe that you are in the Peterborough area . Get in touch with either of us. Congrats to Mike on this site and I am happy to see that it is growing.

Awesome site Mike!! It is sure nice to see all the old names that you forget, especially that old guy named Squirrel. I was in Nelly’s Block from 1995-1997. It is about time he retired HA! HA!

60. Jerry Whelan - 2005-03-26 12:56:36
Hey Ken Collet. Myself and Gerry Alain have been trying to locate you. I am living in Trent River and he comes to visit me from Ottawa. He will be here in May so we want to hook up. Going to inform Rene Labrasseur of this site now.

Yes Squirrel You know me. I currently run the Wardroom. When I got posted back here last year I was in the Ration Office with Staz for a few weeks. My grandparents continued to live on Young Street until their deaths. When I was young I too lived on Charlton Ave for a few years. Corktown pub was called Molleys because that was the name of the Bar Keep who bought shares into the pub.

57. ken collet - 2005-03-25 18:08:27
hi all, iwas just informed of this web site from bob tower and i already see a few old names that i will be looking up.for jerry whelan----- buzz mcfarlane lives just north of madoc with his wife lana on 40 acres.his home # is 613 473 0323.great site, even better than the RCASC site that some of us visit as this is for cooks only.

Hello to all you old and new 861er’s
I am looking for an old Food service Cook by
the name of Ted Wright (ER Wright)
Thanks

55. - 2005-03-25 15:27:07
Hi Joe Merritt
Update on your comments on the webpage.
I never knew that the Corktown pub was called Mollys but then again I was only 5 or 6 at the time.
I just looked up your stats on the webpage and you are just a young fellah compared to me.
Your grandparents do you happen to remember where they lived in Hamilton at that time ? My grandparents lived on Charlton Ave just around the corner from Mollies.
I also notice that you are in Esquimalt right now.
Did we ever meet during your stints there?
I was the Salad King from 1988 till I retired in 2004 so I was just wondering did our paths cross at all. I cannot remember your name out of all the people I know in Esquimalt but that could be to old age setting in on me.

54. Joe Merritt - 2005-03-25 06:08:03
Squirrel, my grandparents immigrated from Ireland and squatted in Cork Town on Young Street, the pub you are referring to was Called Mollys and was the sight that was used to run booze through the states during prohibition to Al Capone. My grandparents were the boot leggers.Mollys pub used to be thier house.Us cooks have some colorful history. Just thought I would pass that along.

Great Site.
Here I am in sunny Cold / Dundurn wondering who's been here before me. Starting to look like a parking lot out here. Three more of the old brick buildings are coming down. One of the old kitchens came down last year. That leaves building 77 as the only Kitchen. One of the Brick buildings is being converted into the New Det HQ. Building ten is going too be partly torn down. The Pizza Hut is being renovated into the new medical / dental building. It's good to see change although a little sad to see history being bulldozed and hauled away. :)

51. Jerry Whelan - 2005-03-23 18:27:50
Mike, just reading your bio and recognized some of the names you mentioned that I haven’t heard for a long time. Joe Short and Buzz McFarlan. I think Wainwright. Jerry Hipson I met in Winnepeg and tru SFS in Borden on course. (we need to set up a Memorial for him to keep his memory with us, great guy) Bob Pitcher and Ron Burke from RMC Kingston. Russ Hudson from 1963. Ken Chalmers from CFB Ottawa and I have been in touch with John Hemstock (74 Egypt) because of the cook web site. Lots of good memories.

50. Squirrel Switzer - 2005-03-22 06:41:37
I should have said something in the last blurb but with having a copy in tow to this guest book I should have read the membership list first. Mike this going to be a really great site if we keep going the way we are right now. 100 members in less than a month. You are going to run out of space shortly. Then what will we do. Just keep up the great work.
Squirrel

49. Squirrel Switzer - 2005-03-22 06:34:11
Hi Gang
Below is a comment I made on the RCASC website just now. This is what I hope will happen on this website. Banter amongst us so that we can meet old friends or make new ones. Lets try.
My Comments on rcasc.org
Well it is nice to see people reading the website. I just received an EMail from Murray Floyd of Hamilton who wrote me an EMail about my blurb on the Corktown Pub. I was remiss in saying that it was long gone because according to hime he says that the GREEN BEER still flows there on 17 Mar every year. It is also nice to see people write to someone about that blurb I put in. That it what this site is all about. Making friends Squirrel Switzer 21 Platoon App Trg Coy Nil Sine Labore

That was Ovile Cormier who submited the Radar Station link. I’ve added the link to the Links & Favourites page for quick access.

Cheers,

46. Jerry Whelan - 2005-03-20 17:52:37
I just want to thank whoever submitted the web site address for all the old radar bases that have come and gone. Excellent reading and memories. I enjoyed it immensely and have passed it on to a couple of cook friends. I have some photo’s of Puntzie Mtn the same as I seen on the web site, plus others.

45. Squirrel Switzer - 2005-03-19 07:00:09
Mike
What was that entry about burning the bacon. Did you actually do that in your career.

I have a story about burned bacon. I was the first person into Nellies Block and a new cook showed up. I asked him what he was doing there before the rest of the military cooks came in and his response was that he was from Comosun College, there for training in a large kitchen. He asked me what he could do till the cooks arrived and I suggested that he cook the bacon. Question from him was how would he know that it was done. My answer was when its BLACK its done. Needless to say that is the way he cooked it. Just a story in my career and I never used that statement on another cook again.

44. Michael Geer - 2005-03-18 04:51:51
Thank you everyone for your support! I know some are not too familiar with messages boards/forums, but they work great for conversations and selected topics. Try using the Chefs Forum. It’s a little bit of a pain when 1st starting up. If you have any problems, send me an email. It also has PM’s (private message) function as well. A chat room is a good idea as well, I’ll see if I can track down a free one, but using Yahoo would be just as easy. I’ll also be putting up future retirements in the Chefs Forum when I get wind of them. Thanks again everyone!

Cheers,

Mike

43. Tony vyvey - 2005-03-18 04:39:04
well this is a great site. thanks Mike for all your work, hope to get in more often, maybe we should get someone to organize a chat room , just a thought lol.
any ways don’t burn the bacon, and tc all

42. Joe Schroeder - 2005-03-17 23:24:55

Squirrel I agree with you a lot of people haven’t been using the guest book. But maybe a lot of them don’t think around pasting on info thru the guest book. Like you said thanks Mike for making the members list easier to read keep up the good work. Hope some others start using the guest book, like to see some new material besides Squirrel just kidding. An I will take you up on the green beer, since I have no wine.

41. Squirrel Switzer - 2005-03-17 14:34:36
I see that Mike has made the change to the members list to make it easier for everyone to look at the new members just signing up.
The only thing I see is nobody wants to come back with any input into the site besides the first guestbook saying that they have just found the site.
The guestbook is for everyone to read and put in little tidbits of info. Thoughts for the day, a joke or something. Lets get the site going guys & gals.
It is ours so lets use it.
I check in everyday to see how things are progressing and they are doing quite nicely.
HAPPY ST PATRICKS DAY to you all. Have a green today to celebrate the day

39. Joe Schroeder - 2005-03-17 01:03:22

Thanks Mike for a great site, I try to go on the site every other day. Nice to see so many retired cooks making use of
the site. Keep up the good work Mike and may many more cooks come on line.

38. Squirrel Switzer - 2005-03-15 22:13:12
Well it was just 5 days ago I wrote something and I see that the numbers have gone up by 14. That is more than two a-day. Lets keep up the good work and check in now and again to see if you see any old friends. Do not forget to email all your old cook buddies to get on line. Just this morning I fired off 2 emails to 2 old buddies, Dave Gaudet and "Gerry" Heffernan. Hope to hear back from both of them soon.

I have a question of Mike tho. Is it possible, instead of having the list alphabetically, have it in the order that they are received. I find that I have read all of the bios but find it hard to remember who is new vs old. If they were in the order received it would make it a little easier to see who has been added to the list instead of going and trying to remember if you had seen this person or that person. Just wondering.
GREAT WORK MIKE KEEP IT UP

Just a few weeks ago I found out about the CF Firefighters having a web site and thought, wouldn’t it be great to have one for cooks. Here we are. Congradulations and lots of luck on the site.Looking forward to finding lost buds from years gone by.

34. Squirrel Switzer - 2005-03-12 20:59:22
Well here we are about a couple of weeks into the site and I see we are up to 75 serving or retired cooks. It is going quite well. Just remember that if each one of you write all the cooks on your email list it can grow even larger. I sent out to all of the cooks on my list and they have all joined up. You all can do the same.

Thanks Mike for an excellent job of this site. It is quite evident that many long tirerless hours we spent to bring this to our fellow 861 ers. Again thank you.

15. Squirrel Switzer - 2005-03-04 21:53:37
Having just signed up a few days ago, I sent out an EMail to all of the cooks on my email list and two of them have already joined up.

I guess what I would like to say is if everyone so far that has signed on, sends an email to all of there cook friends on there mailing list, this site should grow with leaps and bounds.

I’m on another website also rcasc.org/ that is a RCASC site and it is quite large. I would like to see this site grow like it did. Word of mouth will work.

Lets try are hardest to see how many we can sign up.

Hello everyone! First of all, thank you all very much for your compliments, enthusiasm and support. My intent obviously was to reunite many of the retired cooks/chefs and reconnect any others. I've been receiving 7-10 registrations a day, so I've been remiss in returning thank you emails to those that have sent in registrations. I'm very surprised/impressed on the amount of long retired members from way back that have gotten word and signed on. This was my biggest hope! I know for myself, that if it weren't for our electronic age, I wouldn't be keeping in touch with so many old friends as I am. This is also a good medium for retirees to check in and see how their serving friends are doing with promotions and positions etc. Anyway, I apologise for not returning emails to those who've registered. Once again, thanks everyone for making this project and site such a success. We've had over 600 visitors in just our 1st week up.

Mike

This is great , an excellent way to keep in touch with GOOD friends . Glad someone came up with this , I am retiring shortly it fills a void as we all know that sooner or later we all will end up leaving . When you spend some much time in our life to this trade and life style it’s great to still have a little piece of the CF. Thanks Gary’BUBBA’Bass

9. Squirrel Switzer - 2005-03-04 01:22:31
Bill Hendrickson gave mew this website through an EMail. I’m glad he did. Have just read all of listed member s and a few of them I have run into since I retired in 1987. I have worked with a few of them while a civilian at CFB Esquimalt. I hope a few more cooks join the fray and maybe I can contact some of them I worked with back during my career. I hope the site stays up. Squirrel Switzer

This web site is great, excellent job Mike, it's people like you that makes us proud to be cooks. This site is probably long over due, it's nice to see someone take this on. I only wish I had the knowledge to create something like this. I will sent all the info I can to you as I get it.  Hopefully the trade will standardize again and we can get back to the basics of cooking. I feel we have gone to far with the pre-made products and its time we get back to actually cooking.

2. Blinky - 2005-02-27 19:25:56
Hi all
It's really a good feeling to know that as a trade we can still feel like a family, missing members we served with and haven't seen for many years. This is and outstanding way for everyone to stay in contact.

Well done
