Joined the
RCASC in June 1957, basic training 74 platoon. Did driver training
twice as they were really trying to make a driver out of me.
Posted
to 4 Tpt Coy
Winnipeg
as a driver in 1958. It seemed the only time I drove was on exercise,
and it was always the kitchen truck, hence my remuster to cook in
1959.
First
posting as a cook was 1 RCHA in Dellinghofen
Germany
1959. I RCHA was sent back to
Canada
in 1960 and 3 RCHA had its full allotment of cooks so they posted me
to 1 Fld Amb in Werl
Germany
.
From
Germany
I was posted to 3 Fld Sqn Eng in Chillawack . Promoted to Cpl then
back to
Germany
, 1 Fld Detention Barracks, one of my most enjoyable postings.
The
Det Bks closed its doors in 1967 so they sent me to cook for General
Amy at his residence (Hill
Top House) I cooked for him for one year then General Gardner for two
years. Promoted to Sergeant and took over Sgts Mess in
Fort
Henry
.
Next
posting was to CFB Comox in 1970. At that time I seen how the other
side lived and was kicking my self for not joining the Air Force
first, then again I enjoyed my self in the Army. It was a short lived
posting as 1 PPCLI in
Calgary
needed a Sgt cook ASAP and I was posted back to the Army.
Stayed
with 1 PPCLI till 1973 then posted to CFB Esquimalt and HMCS Kootenay
. Promoted to WO and was posted to CFB Borden as I/C A 153 Kitchen in
1975.
Back
to
Germany
, 4 Svc Bn Lahr in 1977. From there to 3 PPCLI in
Victoria 1981
, Promoted to MWO. Stayed in
Victoria
till my release in 1985.
Militia
HQ in
Vancouver
heard of my release and asked if I would take over food services at
Namiamo Military Camp for the summer, which I gladly accepted.
There
I meet a real cute Navy cook who was to become my wife.
Wow,
now I was a dependent husband, and off to
CFB
Cold
Lake
for five years.( That was the longest I ever stayed in
one place.) During our time there I was employed as bar manager then
Mess manager of the Officers Mess.
My
sweet wife was then posted to CFB Penhold in 1990. Now that was a
dream posting compared to
Cold
Lake
, winters were not - 40 weeks on end.
I
worked as a Food Service officer at the penitentiary (Bowden) till
Sharon
and I decided we had enough of this stuff called work in 1992.
Sold
our house in Penhold and bought a 35’ fifth wheel and headed south
for the winters (
Yuma
Arizona
). When we returned in the spring we stayed at the Base camp grounds
for the summer then headed south again for the winter. Did that till
1994.
In
1994 we purchased ½ acre at
Gull
Lake
and built a bungalow. Stayed in our house in the summer and back south
again for the winter. Did that till 2000 then sold our place in Yuma
AZ. Now just enjoying our life too it’s fullest at the
Lake
.
