A group of 54th Battalion Officers on the day of their investiture.

This compilation of Honours and Awards to the 54th Kootenay Battalion C.E.F., used as its primary source the Battalions Regimental History, "Cinquante Quatre". Many of the citations on this site relied heavily on the books by Mr. Riddle and Mr. Mitchell. The remaining citations were copied from the citation cards held by Library and Archives Canada.
The Battalions Honours and Awards roll were found to contain several typographical errors when checked against the battalions roster. Corrections were decided upon after cross references were made with the books listed below and with the images of the Attestation papers, provided on the internet by the National Archives of Canada.
It should be noted that the Imperial and not the U.S. system has been used to signify the date which means that all dates are shown as: dd/mm/yy.
Thirty two of these decorated soldiers lost their lives. As had many others who served in the 54th Battalion. With this in mind a special thanks goes to Edward H. Wigney for his book, "The C.E.F. Roll of Honour".
A special thank you also goes to the staff at Library and Archives Canada for their consideration in searching for and copying the citations to the 54th MM awards. ****
Without these authors and publishers dedication to research and desire to see that these men and their deeds are not forgotten: these Citations, Gazette dates and those found as having received their award from the hands of the King, would have otherwise remained largely unknown. It is with their kind permission, this compilation of Honours and Awards has been made possible.

A Collection of 78 rpm recordings courtesy of Library and Archives Canada. More will be added as I have time. I hope you enjoy them. *

If you are a family member of a 54th Bn. soldier who was awarded a M.M., M.S.M. or Foreign Award, or are a collector, I invite you to send me your name and address. I will be happy to forward the citation card copy I have received from Library and Archives Canada at no charge. Or if you prefer I will send a high resolution image of the document to your email address.

I would be grateful to receive images of any 54th Battalion soldier, whether a recipient of a gallantry award or not. The picture may be taken in the persons later years and would also be gratefully received. Also any 54th related photo/image including grave markers.

There are a number of Military Medal citations not found here as the deed was not recorded at the time. This may have been due to a period of heavy fighting and paperwork could have been put aside. Consequently, Library and Archives of Canada do not have a record for the act of gallantry. If you come across a citation not given here, may I ask you to forward a copy to me please, so it may be included. The circumstances of the awards may be found from such places as local newspapers or diaries etc. and would be greatly appreciated. Your comments and suggestions for the site are welcomed.
