About Us

All our Cavaliers are members of our family and are house dogs.  Our puppies are raised under foot in our country home as healthy, happy companions to be loved and spoiled.
Castlewood is based on Homerbrent, Kindrum, Telvara and Chandlers bloodlines.  We breed very selectively dedicated to the beauty, health and longevity of the breed.

Hearts, eyes and patellas checked annually by Specialists, and only foundation stock clear of the above are used in our breeding program.

With careful selection and breeding, we have very good tempered, outgoing, structurally sound Cavaliers displaying quality, soundness and elegance, lovingly raised in our home as family members for the best in Cavalier personality.
Equally at home snuggling on your lap, or enjoying a nice romp in the woods - just a big dog at heart in a small package!
The Cavalier is a highly intelligent and good natured little dog.  They average 12-18 pounds and 11-13 inches high.  Their personality is much like a Golden Retriever; loving, devoted, quick to learn and eager to please.  They travel well and are a perfect companion for both active and sedentary lifestyles.
They are known for their loving and happy disposition and are wonderful with children.  They bring joy and laughter to many households, love to snuggle and are the ultimate huggable lapdog.  They prefer to sleep in their master's bed and be by his side most of the time.  Those dark Spaniel eyes can melt anyone's heart!
Cavaliers have a soft, lustrous odor-free coat that are “wash and wear” and they do shed, but not excessively, however it can be kept to a minimum by keeping them clean and by frequent brushing.  They loose single hairs like humans do.  Every dog needs some basic maintenance grooming, nails clipped and coat brushed.  Twice weekly brushings should maintain the coat and prevent coat matting.   They housebreak quite easily and are very clean natured, making them the perfect house pet.
Cavaliers make excellent pets, being very outgoing, happy, loving and devoted dogs.  It would be difficult to find a dog with a more delightful temperament.  Cavaliers are a charming Toy Spaniel, elegant but sporting and are versatile dogs, equally happy living in the lap of luxury or hiking in the woods with their owners.  Though they are small enough to suit the city dwelling dog lover, they are equally at home in the country Cavaliers make excellent pets for families with children, professional people, or senior citizens. Those people who are lucky enough to own a Cavalier will have a dog who is a loving companion and friend.
Cavaliers are a joy to teach being very people oriented, they are extremely intelligent and readily absorb all they are taught and are always eager to please you.
They are often seen in the obedience ring, agility, scent hurdling, lure coursing and in fly ball.

Cavaliers are a hardy, healthy breed with few genetic problems, but as with all pure bred dogs, they are not without their genetic problems.  The largest challenge we face in Cavaliers is the occurrence of Mitral Valve Disease or MVD.   A majority of Cavaliers will acquire MVD in their lifetime.  Unfortunately, we see the onset of MVD in some Cavaliers under the age of 5.   Carefully selected matings are made in an effort to produce a higher number of Cavaliers that do not experience the onset of MVD until they are much older.  These standards are also aimed at slowing the progression of MVD once acquired.   Most Cavaliers can live for many years with a low-grade murmur.   By selective breeding, it may someday be eliminated.   Even with the murmur, dogs can live a normal life span and sometimes require medication to control it.  Average life span is 12-14 years.   If faced with a murmur, your Veterinarian will be able to detect it during your annual visit.
