Painted Shirt Native Arts & Crafts - Project Examples Here are some of the projects that Aaron has done as a class for a few of the local Edmonton Native organizations. We also provided a small list of the different projects that we can do. We have a lot more other lessons in our resources so please feel free to ask about our lessons. If you don't see a lesson listed here it doesn't mean that we can't teach it. A few things that we feel that we cannot teach is how to make pipes, roaches, drums, rattles and moccasins/mukluks.
Aaron and the boys made a traditional style bustle pictured at the left and the girls and Aaron made fans pictured below.
This was a three to four day class provided to the youth of the Ben Calf Robe Society and taught by Painted Shirt Native Arts & Crafts.
The shields pictured below are a project provided by Painted Shirt Native Arts & Crafts for the studens of Native Studies at AmiskwaciyAcadamy.
Some other lesson examples that we can provide are: Medicine Wheel – Brief instruction on medicine wheel followed by creation of one using turkey feathers, one circular disk (plastic) two strips of hide, embroidery threat and white glue. Daisy chain necklace –Hand out of instructions and materials. Sinew and glass pony beads or plastic crow beads. Beaded Spiders – Brief instruction and story of spiders, hand out of spider design. Materials 34 gauge beading wire, seed beads bugle beads assorted colours, wire cutters. Basic bead work – Small Pouch – Brief instruction on bead style used and uses of pouch. Materials: one piece of hide, one piece of hide strip, size 11 beading needle, beading thread, seed beads, bees wax and scissors. Teepee Lesson – Teepee teaching followed by the making of a small tepee (depending on age group) materials: Bristol board, crayons, paper scissors, glue, staples. Older kids can do the same project on canvas with acrylic paints, wooden skewers on cardboard base. Beaded Turtle – Short turtle story. Turtle bead count. Materials: seed beads, bugle beads 34 gauge bead wire, wire cutter. Painted feather – Acrylic painting done on turkey feathers. Materials: turkey feathers, glue, embroidery thread, acrylic paints, paint brushes. Bracelet or necklace – Age groups and materials different. Small: plastic crow beads, plastic hairpipe, glass crow beads, leather thong or deer hide |
