BRC Canadian Definitive Stamps
Flag with Scenes: 1989-2002
The first-class rate Flag and scenes series made its debut on 28 Dec/89. The 39c stamp was issued for the new basic postal rate, set for 1 Jan/97. The series shows various background views with the Canadian flag. Some of the varieties are difficult to distinguish, namely the varieties printed by both CBN and AP on the same type of paper. The sheet format was increased to 120 stamps, in two twin panes of 6 x 10, separated by a vertical gutter. A booklet pane of 30 was also issued, consisting of two panes of 5 x 3 separated by a vertical gutter. These produced the first ever regularly issued gutter pairs for Canada.

  1. Items in gray lettering and italics are listed for record purposes. They are indistinguishable with the item directly above.
  2. The 39c, 40c and 43c AP and CBN printings are difficult to distinguish when on the same paper types. The only difference appears to be that the AP printings seem to have a glossy reflective tagging, seen best when viewed at an angle to normal light.
  3. Many shade varieties exist for most values.
  4. For FV-06, the booklet of 30 has two groups of 5 x 3 stamps separated by a blank vertical gutter, while the sheets are in two groups of 10 x 6 separated by a blank vertical gutter. These units produced Canada's first ever regularly issued gutter pairs.
  5. The original booklet that contained FV-08a had the paper designation in the margin as C (Coated), which was a printers error. The booklet was later reprinted (around July 1999) and was corrected as J, along with a slight design change on the front. A third version of the booklet cover was released in late 2000. The single stamps in all three booklets are identical.
  6. Shades exist for FV-09, but they do not appear to relate to the two different printers. Single stamps from the CBN and Ashton printings appear to be indistinguishable.
  7. The Booklets of 30 for the 48c FV-10 and FV-11 consists of 3 booklets of 10 separated rouletted punctures. Booklets of 10 are available without the separation roulettes from the Philatelic counters.
  8. FV-10b was distributed in the philatelic quarterly packs and the annual souvenir collection.
