NEW BRUNSWICK

All executions were carried out by hanging. Executions took place in a wide variety of locations. On two occasions two brothers were hanged.


NEW BRUNSWICK (1784-1867)

The territory was first settled by the French and became part of Acadia. England claimed the area in 1621 and it then became part of Nova Scotia. In 1784 the land known as Sunbury County became the separate colony of New Brunswick.

Babcock, Amasa 1805 June 28 hanged Dorchester murder M ? ? farmer ? Stabbed his sister in February 1805. He went insane after listening to a sermon from a fanatic preacher.
Bergren, Patrick 1824 hanged Saint John theft M ? 18 ? ? Stole 24 cents.
Smith 1831 hanged Fredericton murder M ? ? ? London Killed 2 men and injured a 3rd with an ax in a lumber camp in York County. Hanged at the entrance of the Old Burial Ground.
Slavin, Patrick 1857 December 11 hanged Saint John murder M ? abt 60 railway construction labourer ? Murdered a family for money.
Hicks, Amos 1864 September 08 hanged Dorchester murder M ? ? ? Botsford, Sheriff Killed his neighbour, William Hill. Supposedly Hill squatted on a piece of land belonging to Hicks' uncle.

NEW BRUNSWICK (1867-PRESENT)

In 1867 New Brunswick was one of the four original colonies to form Canada. Executions from this date on were under Canadian jurisdiction.

Gallien, Olivier 1874 October 29 hanged Bathhurst murder M ? ? ? ? Murdered Xavier Poulin on 20 Apr 1874 in Caraquet Island. Poulin's wife, Angele, was charged with accessory before the fact. She was pregnant during the trial and her death sentence was commuted to life in prison.
O'Neil, Thomas 1876 August 03 hanged Saint John murder M ? ? ? ? Stabbed his mother-in-law, Bridget Fothergill, on 03 Feb 1876.
Vaughan, William 1878 June 22 hanged Saint John murder M ? 28 ? ? Murdered Mary Quinn on Feb 1878.
Dowd, Thomas 1879 January 14 hanged St Andrews murder M ? ? farmhand ? Murdered Thomas Ward on 09 Sept 1878. Ward's wife was a co-defendant; her death sentence was commuted.

Cammack, Thomas 1905 January 12 hanged Woodstock murder M ? elderly ? Hayward, Sheriff Shot his brother-in-law, William Doherty, on 17 Jul 1904. Cammack's son was initially accused of the same crime but the charge was dismissed.
