These are Robert Cook, Everett Farmer, Hector Legault, Jack Loran, Arthur Lucas, Earl Lund, Henry Malanik, Leo Mantha, Fred Phillips, Marguerite Pitre, Joseph Richard, and Ronald Turpin. Includes photographs of each prisoner.
MEMOIRS OF A GREAT CANADIAN DETECTIVE Murray, John Wilson John Murray was the first provincial detective in Ontario. He wrote a series of short accounts of his most famous cases. These include Jim Allison, Reginald Birchall,Almeda Chattelle, John Hendershott, William Welter, John Young. A very interesting book, unfortunately it is out of print. Used copies might not always be available.
RUNNING WITH DILLINGER: THE STORY OF RED HAMILTON AND OTHER FORGOTTEN CANADIAN OUTLAWS Butts, Ed Includes Tom Bassoff, John Burowski, Jack Krafchenko, Earl Lund, the Power Gang, and Fred Phillips. Also has stories of train robbers and prison escapes.
SIX FOR THE HANGMAN Grant, B. Detailed accounts of New Brunswick's most famous murder cases. Contains Amasa Babcock, the Bannister brothers, Thomas Collins, Thomas Hutchings, and Patrick Slavin. This book is long out of print and hard to find.
TEN STEPS TO THE GALLOWS Fitzgerald, Jack This book is the definitive history of capital punishment in Newfoundland. Required reading for all students of Newfoundland criminal history. Fitgerald included every execution known at the time he wrote it. Out of print but used copies are usually available.
UNCERTAIN JUSTICE: CANADIAN WOMEN AND CAPITAL PUNISHMENT several authors We haven't read this one yet but it at least contains Eleanor Powers.

HANGED IN CANADA: A CONCISE HISTORY OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IN CANADA Anderson, Frank W. An excellent history of capital punishment and the executioners who carried it out. Mentions Reginald Birchall, and Josiah Cutten among others.
HARD PLACE TO DO TIME: THE STORY OF OAKALLA PRISON. 1912-1991 Andersen, Earl An excellent history of this prison from when it was built til it's last prisoner. Suitable for anyone with an interest in this facility. Has stories of escapes and hangings including those of H. Medos and D. Houston.

LORD HIGH EXECUTIONER Engel, Howard History of executioners from around the world with emphasis on England, France, United States and Canada. Contains short accounts of the executions of the Bloody Assize in Ancaster in 1814, the Cree Indians at Battleford, Reginald Birchall, Hilda Blake, Charcoal, Jean Duval, John Lee (Johan Ingebretson), Julia Murdoch, Thomasino Sarao, Daniel Vuil among others.
PIONEER CRIMES AND PUNISHMENTS IN TORONTO AND THE HOME DISTRICT Jones, James Edmund This old book has long been out of print. Amazon has it listed but a used copy is not always available. You might have to occasionally check back. This is an excellent history of the legal system and punishments in Toronto in a time when a prisoner's diet was bread and water.
NOVELS
GEORGE AND RUE Clarke, George Elliot The author is the cousin of the Hamilton brothers who were hanged in Fredericton in 1949. He based this novel on their murder case.
LA LAMPE DANS LA FENETRE Cadieux, Pauline This is the story of Cordelia Viau (hanged 1899). From the synopsis it appears to be a novelized account of the murder. A movie called "Cordelia" was based from this book but it is very hard to find. (FRENCH)
TWO-HEADED POEMS Atwood, Margaret This book of poems contains "Marrying The Hangman", a novelized account of the true story of Francois Laurent. She was to be hanged as soon as an executioner was found. She talked a fellow prisoner into taking the vacant position to gain his freedom, then marrying her to gain her freedom.

A CANADIAN TRAGEDY: JOANN AND COLIN THATCHER Siggins, Maggie Colin Thatcher was convicted for the 1983 murder of his ex-wife. He was paroled in 2006.
THE DONNELLY ALBUM: THE COMPLETE AND AUTHENTIC ACCOUNT OF CANADA'S FAMOUS FEUDING FAMILY. Fazakas, Ray This infamous family terrorized Lucan, Ontario until they were murdered by vigilantes.
INVISIBLE DARKNESS: THE HORRIFYING CASE OF PAUL BERNARDO AND KARLA HOMOLKA Williams, Stephen This married couple killed Homolka's sister and 2 other girls in St Catherines, Ontario in the 1990's.
THE PRODIGAL HUSBAND: THE TRAGEDY OF HELMUTH AND HANNA BUXBAUM Harris, Michael Helmuth Buxbaum hired a hitman to kill his wife in the 1980's. He died in November 2007 while serving his prison sentence.

WHERE SHADOWS LINGER: THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE RCMP'S OLSON MURDERS INVESTIGATION Holmes, Les Clifford Olson killed 11 children in British Columbia in the early 1980's. He is still in prison.
WILLIAM FYFE, TUEUR EN SERIE Pigeon, Marc William Fyfe killed at least 5 Montreal women in the 1970's. He was apprehended due to DNA evidence in 1999. (FRENCH)
