What is CAMRA?
In 1971 angry beer lovers in England formed the CAMpaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) to combat the replacement of traditional regional beers with "mainstream" factory beers. Affiliated with the now 50,000 strong CAMRA UK, CAMRA BC supports the brewing of traditional styles of beer in the traditional manner, using traditional ingredients. The Society promotes naturally brewed live beers of all styles: ales, lagers, stouts, etc.
The aims of CAMRA UK are to:
- maintain consumer rights
- promote quality, choice and value for money
- support the public house as a focus of community life
- campaign for greater appreciation of traditional beers, ciders and perries as part of national heritage and culture
- promote and preserve full flavoured and distinctive beers and decent pubs
What is CAMRA Victoria?
The Campaign for Real Ale Society of British Columbia (CAMRA BC) was incorporated in 1990 and is dedicated to the promotion and responsible consumption of natural, crafted beers. The membership of CAMRA Victoria is now close to 200 and includes micro-breweries and neighborhood pubs as corporate members. Activities include meetings each month with guest speakers, beer tastings, homebrewing seminars, publication of a bi-monthly newsletter, and annual homebrew contest, and several social gatherings. Many members are skilled amateur brewers. CAMRA members are eager to apply their talents and experience to promoting widespread public appreciation of the many "real beers" that have become available in recent years. How Do I Join CAMRA Victoria
The more people who join CAMRA BC, the more people there will be making educated purchases of craft brewed ales. There are the regular monthly meetings that frequently feature entertaining lectures relevant to all things beer. The more you learn the less likely you will be to poison your system with adulterated swill from you-know-who. Click here for more information on joining CAMRA BC. Click here for an application form.

Real Measures for Real Ale?
It is with great pleasure that CAMRA Victoria is able to announce the cancellation of its Real Measures for Real Ale Campaign. Although there is no consistency in the sizes of the servings that you may be given in BC watering holes, there is now regulation on the books which requires an establishment to make a list available which clearly shows the cost and size of a serving.
Well done CAMRA Victoria!

Recently Deceased Breweries
FOR YEARS, or so it seems, we've been celebrating the growth of the microbrewery and craft beer industries. During the late 1980s and earlier this decade, new breweries were opening almost as quickly as they could get a license and brewing equipment. Brewpubs, too, were sprouting up thick and fast all over the province. But fierce competition, archaic legislation and unfair dealing practices by the major breweries have made it a deadly game for some. Click here for a list of the recently deceased breweries.

What Is The Great Canadian Beer Festival?
In 1992 CAMRA Victoria made the decision to promote "real beers" in an annual beer festival. Starting in October, 1993, successful festivals have been held at the Victoria Conference Centre annually. The Great Canadian Beer Festival Society was formed in 1995 as an offshoot of the Victoria branch of CAMRA BC, to organize and manage the annual Victoria beer festival. The public has attended in increasing numbers each year attesting to the popularity of high quality beers. Click here for more information.
