Notes for CHARLES VICTOR RUSK:
From "Golden Memories of the Wood River Pioneers"
Charles Victor Rusk was born in 1890 in Parry Sound, Ontario, a son of Walter and Martha Rusk. There were six boys and one girl in the family. As a boy Charley worked in a harness shop where her leaned to fix shoes as well - a skill that served him well in later years.
In 1905 the family came west and stayed for a short time in Pierson, Manitoba, then moved on to Gainsborough, Sask., where they lived on a farm until 1908. Early in 1909, Charley filed on NW15-7-6 just south of Woodrow. Here he built a sod shack. He managed to purchase six oxen and a plow and in 1910 had 25 acres which was hailed out unfortunately. By 1914, after good crops, the land was all broken and oxen and machinery were paid for.
In 1914, Charley enlisted and served in the Armed Forces until 1918. While overseas, he was wounded three times and was also badly gassed. this left him with impaired health. While Charley was in the armed forces, his mother lived on the farm, operating it until he returned in March 1919.
On March 24, 1920, he married Elena Crampton, and they moved onto the S1/2 of 15-7-6 in the Bellmuir district. Besides the Bellmuir school there was the Bellmuir hall located across the road. The hall was the centre of many social activities and Charley supplied much of the music on his violin. He had learned to play it as a boy back in Parry Sound.
The Twenties were prosperous...
Due to the adversity of the early thirties Charley moved north to Erinferry, north of Prince Albert. During the winters he went north to cut logs and clear the land. In 1937 the entire family possessions, farm machinery and livestock were loaded on three rail cars and the family moved to the homestead at Erinferry. From there they came back each spring to do the farming and returned to Erinferry in the fall.
Charley's health began to fail so he and Elena moved to a home in Woodrow. By 1969 he required nursing care and went to the nursing home in Assinboia. In 1970 they celebrated their 50th anniversary in the home.
