Mystery Trip

Date: Saturday, April 4

Meet: meet at Island Saving Centre (Community Centre) parking lot to load bus - west side, by the library

Time: 8:30 am-Return 4:30pm

Costs: $33.00 - cost based on 30 people - more people reduced cost - max 47 people

Washrooms: hopefully on bus and confirmed at Mystery Location - best if you off-load your morning coffee at the Community Centre before we leave

Walking Conditions:  virtual flat - muddy in places as well as potentially slippery if you are careless - must bring footwear to accommodate about 4" of mud - if weather obliges it may be dry

Directions: starting location is the Island Saving Centre, 2768 James Street, (the Big Hockey Stick) - park and load on the west side, by the new Library

Cautions: use the restroom before you load, BRING A LUNCH and fluid for drink; charge your camera batteries, bring ample storage material (memory cards); dress for the weather and bring footwear to accommodate some mud

Features: excited photographers, and more

Photo Opportunities: If you're not happy, I'll be walking home, but I don't think so - CHARGE your batteries, bring memory cards and your CAMERA

Painter's at Genoa Bay

Date: Saturday, April 18, 2009

Meet: Genoa Bary Parking lot by Public Restrooms - there is parking space available next to the house for those who need to be closer

Time: 10:00am - noon
10:00-11:00 at docks and lower grounds - 11:00-noon at Painter's. 
Noon break for coffe or lunch
after break to 4:00pm - an invitation to stay until 4:00pm has been extended to the club. There is far more than one hour's worth of shooting , so to accomodate this Shirley has invited members to stay until 4:00pm for those who would like to shoot a little more.  The humming bird feeder (behind the gate) will have the best light later in the afternoon.

Costs: donations accepted for purchase of birdseed

Washrooms: best in BC, located in the marina parking lot

Walking Conditions: 20-30 foot incline on paved road from parking lot to Painter's house - ouside garden has fairly level paths

Directions: starting in Duncan on the Island Highway:

1. Turn east off the Island Hwy onto Trunk Rd
2. Stay straight to go onto Tzoulalem Rd go approx 1 km
3. Turn left onto Maple Bay Rd
4. Turn slight right to stay on Maple Bay Rd go .16 km
5. Turn slight right again to stay on Maple Bay Rd go 5.14 km
6. Turn right onto Genoa Bay Rd go 1.28 km
7. Turn left to stay on Genoa Bay Rd
8. Continue approx 4 km to Genoa Bay
9. The road turns left to end in the parking area

Cautions: road to Genoa Bay is NARROW - drive with caution, not many areas to pull off road - Constrution may slow traffic if they work that day. - Ramps at the Bay will be sloped as the tide will be midway between low and high

Features: we will be able to take photos both inside Painter's unique home, which features a full sized sailboat, and in the gardens, where there are more than 20 birdfeeders. Also, Genoa Bay Marina and art gallery.

Photo Opportunities: interior house shots, an abundance of humming birds and other tbbs, flowers, vistas, possible eagles, herons, king fishers, hawks, falcons, otters, baby birds, tree-lined shores, towering vistas, float homes, quiet beaches, boats, waterfowl.

Post Trip Review (coffee): Noon break - the restaurant at Genoa Bay will be open to the club only for lunch as well as coffee.

Finnerty Gardens
University of Victoria, Victoria, BC

Date: Saturday, April 25, 2009

Meet: 8:40am at the Island Savings Centre Parking Lot or 10:00am athe the Finnerty Garden Parking Lot

Time: 10:00am to noon

Costs: none - parking free on weekends

Washrooms: near the entry to the gardens

Walking Conditions: almost flat with crushed, hard packed rock

Directions: starting in Duncan on the Island Highway:

1. travel south on the Island Hwy for 55.5 km
2. turn left on McKenzie Ave and continue for 7.8 km
3. turn right on to Finnerty Rd  and proceed to Univerity Drive
4. stay to the right and watch for Finnerty Garden Parking Lot

Cautions: lots of pollen and bees

Features: Rhododendren Garden - One of Canada's best collections of rhododendrons (over 200 species) displayed on 3 acres of lanscaped grounds.

Photo Opportunities: rhododendrens and other flowers, ponds, woodpeckers, tbbs
