“Ask Burt” - Is the world in me, or am I in the world?

Dearest Bertie:

What can I possibly say except a formidable THANK YOU for your awe-inspiring E mail. I really enjoyed it and I agree 100%.

I feel that true religion is the good life we lead and the consciousness we derive from it, and not the creed which is professed.

Maybe some time in the future you may inform me more in plain details about this inspiring inward knowledge we have, called consciousness.

As always, all my love. M.

Dear M.,

How lovely to hear from you again so soon. You said, “Maybe some time in the future you may inform me more in plain details about this inspiring inward knowledge we have, called consciousness.”

It is my pleasure to do so...

We are human beings and that means that every human has two parts — a human part and a ‘being’ part. Most people are not aware of the ‘being’ part which is consciousness. Consciousness is the Life-Force that sustains all life and is Life itself! This Life-Force is aware and that is how we know we are conscious beings. The human part (body, mind and personality) are sustained, maintained and controlled by the Life-Force which keeps the heart beating, blood circulating and cells renewing moment to moment. This miracle of the Life-Force everyone takes for granted without question and yet, once it is understood, awakens forces within us that are miraculous. For example this Life-Force which is every living thing creates the brain. The brain is more powerful than any known computer and it is self-organizing. It creates according to its experience of life. This experience of life (impressions of the environment which become thoughts) are always swirling about around the brain. When we are not conscious of these impressions (called thoughts) we actually believe them to be real and so it forms our personality and mind function. For example, if impressions in childhood were those of deprivation and abandonment or poverty than such thoughts swirl from the brain making this picture real. If, on the other hand, one is fed with good impressions than the thoughts are more positive and it too makes up one’s reality. However, it all boils down to what one is conscious-of and not really real. Every human being has his or her own ideas about life and these are all beliefs based on one’s experiences. However, when we start understanding the nature of consciousness (which everyone is) then a whole new dynamic opens up and it will be like a whole new world of seeing and experiencing, because we are then no longer slaves to our thoughts or attachments.

What every life has in common, whether animal or human, is consciousness. In other words, there is immediate awareness of our environment. Consciousness activates senses derived from the brain and makes us see, feel, hear, taste and experience. Humans have an advantage over the animal — It is aware and also conscious of the fact that it is aware. This ability to self-recognize can make a human attain almost impossible heights of knowledge and understanding. The more we understand that we are LIFE being lived by this invisible unknown force, the more we recognize how we are all the same beneath the appearance. This recognition of the same One Life-Force makes us realize that beneath our body, personality and mind-conditioning we are the same One Being (Life-Force). This recognition awakens love, compassion, sensitivity, intelligence and understanding. The more this ‘LOVE’ awakens in each human, the broader and expanded becomes one’s consciousness until all racism, fanaticism, self-righteousness, pettiness, smallness, self-egoism, greed, separation and even all forms of fear start to die (fall away). Then, consciousness becomes purer and more direct and, as self-centredness drops away slowly, so does the capacity for love and happiness increase.

Please feel free to ask any other questions.

With much love,

Bertie xxxxx
