ADDMAN REVIEW Author and Source: AddMan March (2007) is going to be a big month for music fans. New albums coming out left, right, and center. In preparation for the new David Usher album, Strange Birds, I’ve decided to review David’s earlier solo works... So in the summer of 2001, David Usher released his solo follow up album, Morning Orbit. Right away something was different. Gone was the acoustic sound of Little Songs and in came the full ensamble of instruments that you’d expect to find in a solo album. The acoustic guitar that David plays so well is still there, but it’s got company in the form of a piano, an electric guitar, and a full set of drums. And remember the song Forestfire that I said would be a casual fan fav? Well, that same sound makes an appearance in several songs, just juiced up a bit to match the new sound. Too Close to the Sun is an easy example of this. Pop music at its finest, plus a little dance / funk / techno thrown into the back beat just to add in that little something extra. The album itself excels in almost every way. You’ve got the hit songs Alone in the Universe and Black Black Heart along with some softer songs, like Closer and How Are You. The album as a whole is harder than his first solo attempt, which works wonders for these songs, especially Black Black Heart v2. This album may have pushed away some of the fans from Little Songs, but it’s so much more accessible to fans of both pop and rock that this album is a net gain for David that, unless you’re one of the few that couldn’t get enough of the super soft / acoustic sound of his last album, will be listening to over and over again.
