CHART CD REVIEW, SEPTEMBER 9, 2003

[Hallucinations Cover]

DAVID USHER Hallucinations (EMI)

At first, Hallucinations is all about the David Usher’s smooth and clear voice: his range strikes you immediately and powerfully. He moves from soft and low to loud and desperate, he even manages a breathy Marilyn-type falsetto. The lead single, Time Of Our Lives, is a soft-rock ballad that exhibits great use of acoustic sound and dramatic climaxes. These climaxes are all over the album and draw the listener into Usher’s music. Other highlights include the title track, an upbeat song with a lilting chorus and electronica elements, as well as Devil By My Side and Numb. All the songs have a distinctly Usher quality, giving the album a cohesive sound. Sometimes he runs the risk of the songs sounding too similar, but manages to pull off enough contrast to separate the tracks.
